Have you ever wondered who invented the

boomerang? I have and I learned the answer when I

visited Australia. I have a fantastic book called The
Aboriginal Peoples of Australia by Anne Bartlett that
explains how Aboriginal men used the boomerang
while hunting kangaroos and emus to provide meat for
their families.
I traveled 18 hours to visit this continent but you can
travel to it by checking out this book from the library
to learn about boomerangs and other aspects of the
Aboriginal culture. You can learn about their food, art,
and clothing. Did you know they used white paint on
their bodies creating tattoos for use in ceremonies
honoring their dead? Come check it out!

Heres a preview of some of the topics. The book
tells the story of the original people from the
continent of Australia. You can learn how they lived
in ancient times and what happened to them when
the British arrived to live on their land.

Australia is a land of contrast! Dry desert in the
center! Giant Rocks in the Northern Territory with
the most famous being Uluru
Its so dry most people now live around the coast
near water!
Yet, tropical rain forests are in the northern
territory.

During ancient times, Aboriginal people spent time
traveling the land to find water and food. To
obtain food, the men hunted with spears and
boomerangs they carved from wood. They threw
the spears and boomerangs so they could kill
kangaroos and emus for food to eat and for
clothing. Women caught smaller animals, such as
lizards, snakes, and possums. Women also
gathered fruit, seeds, and eggs for food.

Aboriginal people loved painting, storytelling, singing,
dancing, and playing music. The book shows many
examples of their artistic designs and explains their
viewpoint of the world.

They painted white lines and tattoo-like decorations on
their bodies. They would sing to help with healing, or
grieving, and to help the spirits of the dead depart.
Songs helped them record their histories.

In 1770s life changed drastically for them when the
British arrived and began claiming their land.
Fighting and disease killed a great many people.

The British began controlling the government and
Aboriginals were driven off their land. Children with
Caucasian fathers were taken from Aboriginal mothers
and placed in church-run homes from 1910 to 1970.

By reading this book you can learn how the
government has now changed policies and what
aboriginals are doing with art and dance to survive in
the 21
st
century. This book is a fascinating look at the
Aborigines and their fight to maintain their ancient
culture and their political rights in a world now
dominated by British society.
