Another styl e of kni fe sheaths that has al ways been very popul ar i s the l ayered constructi on kni fe sheath. Easy to make, thi s styl e provi des an
attracti ve and secure way to carry your pri zed creati on. The kni fe shown above, by the way, i s a modi fi ed Commando bl ade as shown i n the Ful l
to Hi dden Tang Tutori al
A pi cture i s worth a whol e bunch of words. Thi s pi cture shows the basi c constructi on that can be
modi fi ed for j ust about any kni fe. Thi nk ahead when you l ay thi s out. I desi gned thi s for a ri ght hi p
carry- ri ght hand draw.
Experi ment getti ng the si ze ri ght wi th a paper templ ate fi rst. Much more economi cal to goof up a
pi ece of paper than an expensi ve pi ece of l eather. Hol d the paper templ ate to your hi p to make sure
the ori entati on i s to your l i ki ng
Use the paper templ ate to cut out the l eather pi eces. Di d you noti ce how I forgot the grommet tab
on the bottom of the sheath on the paper templ ate? I remembered before I cut out the l eather
I used a good contact cement to gl ue the l ayers together and used vari ous cl i ps to hol d i t together
for a few mi nutes whi l e thi s cures. They do make speci al ty gl ues desi gned for l eather but I've al ways
found that the more economi cal contact cement i s pl enty strong.
The l eather strap i s added through two sl ots cut i n the back off the sheath. Try to make thi s a snug

I'm so l azy. I used a fi ne dri l l bi t i n a Dremel tool to put the l aci ng hol es al ong the si des of the
sheath fol l owi ng a l i ne I drew wi th a l i ght col ored pen.
I use a fi gure 8 sti tch, i denti cal to the one used i n the Pouch Sheath Tutori al to ti ghtl y sti tch thi s
sheath together.
I pi cked up these metal grommets at a craft store. Instal l ati on i s fast and si mpl e wi th a hammer and
the tool that came wi th the grommet ki t.
Sl i de the kni fe i nto the sheath, wrap the straps around the handl e and use a needl e to poke through
both l ayers to mark where the snaps are goi ng to be i nstal l ed.
Lay out the mal e and femal e hal ves of the snaps before proceedi ng and make sure you've got them
ori ented correctl y before i nstal l i ng them. The snap setter i s a speci al i zed ( but economi cal ) tool
speci fi cal l y desi gned to peen these i n pl ace.
Check to make sure that you have the mal e and femal e hal ves of the snaps l ai d out correctl y.
Add a coupl e of qui ck sti tches through the back of the sheath to hol d the strap i n pl ace.
I chose to use a dark brown dye ( al though not desi gned for l eather, I used Mi nwax stai n and was
happy wi th the resul t) before fol di ng over the bel t l oop to be abl e to get to al l surfaces.
Fol d the bel t l oop over, use a thi n bead of contact cement to hol d i t i n pl ace and secure i t wi th two
ri vets. Afterwards, I thought i t mi ght have been more useful to use two snaps here to al l ow easy
removal from a bel t. Too l ate.
