more bearable (as much as we love Danny Kaye and the Andrews Sisters, we can only listen to
Bongo Bongo Bongo so many times), but Existence 2.0 is one of the best. Featuring a creepy
robotDJandanevencreepierselectionofambientmusic,Existence2.0issuretounnerveyouas
you explore the terrifying postapocalyptic Capital Wasteland. Though it might not be the most
lorefriendly (for more fitting Fallout music, check outCONELRAD 6401240 by the same mod
author), Existence 2.0s ambient terror tunes are perfect for exploring a dark metro tunnel, or
walkingthewastelandatnightwhenyoucantseefivefeetinfrontofyourface.Ifyouwantamore
horrifyingFalloutexperience,considerdownloadingthismod,especiallyifyoureafanoftheworks
ofMarkMorganandAkiraYamaoka.

Style

Travel mod is just right for you. With this mod installed, you know have a couple of alternate
optionsforgettingacrosstheunforgivingwastelandinsteadofinstantlyfasttravellingeverywhere.
Walkingeverywhereinagamesuchasthis,withallofitsfetchquests,canbealittleunreasonable.
Thatswherethismodcomesin.Insteadoffasttravellingfromanywhere,orhavingtowalkallthe
time,thismodgivesyouahappymedium,allowingtoyouinstantlytravelonlyatspecificlocations.
From Big Town to Rivet City, the player can pay a small fee to be ferried across the radioactive
Potomac, allowing them to access the major points of the Capital without feeling like theyre
cheating.Fortheruralsideofthewasteland,theplayerastheoptiontoteleporttoanydiscovered
locationfromoneoffournewlyaddedRobCoTelePodresearchstations.Witheighttotalfasttravel
options,thismodisperfectforanyplayerwhowantsthesatisfactionofexploringthewasteland,
withouttheunreasonablehassleofwalkingabsolutelyeverywhere.
8.ArefuExpanded
EverfeellikethesettlementsoftheCapitalWastelandwereaweebittoosmall?ArefuExpanded
addressesthisbydoingexactlywhatitsaysonthetin.Ratherthanacollectionofthreeshackson
a bridge, Arefu is now a sprawling settlement an oasis in the wild wasteland. Not content to
simplyaddafewextraNPCsandbuildings,themodauthorwenttheextramilebyexpandingthe
humble townof Arefu in the vertical sense, adding a rickety undertown as well as reimagining
the original settlement. This mod doesnt just make Arefu bigger. It goes above and beyond by
adding over 600 lines of fully voiced dialogue, sixteen new characters, four new quests, unique
weapons,andevenaradiostationfeaturinglorefriendlymusicfortheplayertoenjoy.Ifyoure
lookingforawholelotofextracontentandabrandnewsettlementtoexplore,looknofurther.

YoustumblethroughtheapocalypticruinsofWashingtonD.C.,hulkingmonstrousmutantsintow.
You rush over to a crumbling building only to find another boarded up door. The amount of
inaccessible interiors was one of the biggest problem plaguing Fallout 3s game world, and the
DCInteriorsProjectmodsetsouttofixthiswithdozensofunique,lorefriendlylocationstoexplore
from ruined shops ripe for looting, to explorable homes and boxcars. If you ever wanted
morelocations to explore, get this mod. It adds a mindboggling amount of new content, all of
whichfitsperfectlyintothebasegame.Theselocationsarentanythingtoofaroutoftherealmof
possibility,theyresimplymoreofwhatyoualreadyhaveinthevanillaexperience.Thismodjust
addsmoreFallout,andwhodoesntwantthat?
6.SimpleRealism
EverfeltthatFallout3wastooeasy?Tiredoffeelinglikeanoverpoweredgodinsteadofalowly
lonewanderer?SodidtheauthorbehindSimpleRealism,whosetouttooverhaulthedifficultyof
thegamewhilstremainingasclosetothevanillaexperienceaspossible.Withoutmodifyingany
locations or items, Simple Realism manages to overhaul how you approach the game without
gettingtoocomplicated.Provingthatbigthingscomeinsmallpackages,SimpleRealismislessthan
100KBinsize,andyetstillmanagestodrasticallyalterthefeelofthegame.Gonearethedaysof
shootingraidersintheheadtwentytimesbeforetheygodown,andviceversa.Nolongerwillyou
baskinradioactivepoolsandjumpoffledgeswithoutacareintheworld.Oh,andyoucanforget
aboutstockpilingmountainsofsupplies.Lootisrarerandyourcarryingcapacityhasbeenreduced.
Weaponshitharder,damageresistanceismoreimportantthanever,andstimpacksnowhealover
time,justlikeHardcoreModeinFallout:NewVegas.Dontworryifanyofthatisntyourstyle.Due
toitsmodularnature,certainfeaturesofthismodcanbetoggledonandoff,allowingyoutomake
amodthatfitsyourplaystyle.SimpleRealismisamustdownloadforanyhardcoreplayerlooking
forachallenge,oranyonelookingtomaketheCapitalWastelandaharsher,moreapocalypticplace.
5.FloraOverhaul
LegendarymodderVurtiswellknownforhismeticulousfloraoverhauls,allofwhichbreathnew
lifeintoagame,sometimesliterally.TheFallout3iterationofhisworkisnoexceptiontothis.This
mod,simplytitledFloraOverhaul,doesprettymuchwhatyoudexpect:itoverhaulsthefloraof
theCapitalWasteland.Tosaythatitmerelyretexturesthegameworldwouldbeunderstatement,
though that is exactly what it does. Vurts Flora Overhaul for Fallout 3 doesnt just change the
colour of the wastelands dead plantlife it completely overhauls the games atmosphere and
visual tone. Dont worry if youre not a fan of green, this mod comes in fourflavours: Forested
Edition, Dead Edition, Total Devastation Edition, and Lite. The first is the most drastic change,
turning the Capital into a beautiful green paradise, albeit still a horrifying anarchistic one. Its
certainlynotlorefriendly,butifyoureallylikedthevisualdesignofTheLastofUs,youlllovethis.
DeadEditionismuchclosertothebasegame,withslightlymorepronouncedvegetation,though
stillwitheredanddying.Insteadofbaretreesanddesertsands,youllgetbrowntreesandtalldead
grass.TheTotalDevastationversionoffersbleakerwastelandwithnoleavesofwhichtospeak.Lite
is a minimilstic approach to the overhaul, sticking as close to the vanilla experience as possible
whilst still replacing a couple of the default trees and groundcovers. Just when you thought the
wasteland couldnt get any more beautiful and/or bleak, Vurts Flora Overhaul promises to give
yourgameawholenewlookthatwillkeepyougoingforseveralmoreplaythroughs.
4. SydneyFollower

Whenmodauthordrg6520firstplayedFallout3hewasmorethanalittledisappointedtofindthat
Sydney,acharacterhefoundtobefarmoreinterestingthananyoftheoriginalcompanions,was
unable to be recruited as a follower after the Stealing Independence quest. When he started
playingthePCversion,hesetouttorectifythiswiththeSydneyFollowermod,whichdoesexactly
whatyouexpect,andmaybealittlemore.Thecreatorofthismodcouldhavesettledforacouple
extra lines in the dialogue that allowed Sydney to follow the player mindlessly, but that wasnt
enough.Instead,hewentoutofhiswaytoaddextrafunctionalityandcontent,allofwhichcomes
togethertomakeSydneyoneofthebestcompanionsintheseries.Ratherthanleaveherasilent
andstaticfollower,themodauthorgaveSydneyover400linesofuniquedialogue,allvoicedby
theoriginalvoiceactress.Forinsanededicationtoamodthatsmoreofanexpansionthanasimple
addon,theSydneyFollowermodeasilyearnsaspotonthislist.
3.Alton,IL
Whats that you say? Five expansion packs wasntenough for you? Okay, have one more.Quite
possiblythelargestandmostexpansivemodsevercreatedforFallout3,AltonIL,letsyouexplore
youguesseditAlton,Illinois.Anexpansiontwoyearsinthemaking,Altonfeaturesahostileopen
worldtornapartbyrivallingfactionsfortheplayertoexplore,withplentyofloreanddialogueto
backitup,thankstoatalentedteamofvoiceactors.Itsnotjustthesizeofthecontentthatmakes
Altonamustdownload,however.Whatmakesthissuchagreatmodisitsdedicationtodetail;the
branching main quest features a great degree of choice and moral ambiguity with an epic story
thatunfoldsacrossafullyexplorableworldmaptwicethesizeofPointLookout,separatefromthe
basegame.IfyouhavemostoftheofficialDLCsandwanttoexploremore,Altonwontdisappoint.
2.Fellout

Outside of ENB presets, the best way to beautify your game is Fellout. Aside from the funny
name,HattixsmodmakesafewperformancefriendlyadjustmentstomaketheCapitalWasteland
lookinganawesomeplayertoexploreagain.Firstandforemost,thismodremovesthegrossgreen
tintthroughwhichthegameworldusedtobefiltered.Italsotweaksthewater,givingitacleaner,
clearerlook.Thismodmightnotappealtoeveryone,butanyonewhodesiresapurerexperience
willcertainlywanttodownloadthisbeforeanythingelse.Ifyoufancyyourselfahardcoreplayer
whoseeksanimmersiveexperienceaboveallelse,youllprobablyappreciatehowdarknightsand
interiors are with Fellout installed. Maybe now youll think twice before venturing out into the
wastesinthemiddleofthenight.
1.FalloutWanderersEdition

If you had to download just one mod, it would probably have to be Fallout Wanderers Edition.
Lessof a mod and more of a complete overhaul, thissets out to enhance the core gameplay
mechanics behind Fallout 3 along with the welcome addition of new content. The firstperson
shooter aspect is now muchstronger, making for a fresh experience that requires player skill as
wellasdeepcharactergrowth.Theroleplayingelementshavebeenimproved,too.Thegamenow
features deeper, more meaningful RPG mechanics, lending greater depth and meaning to the
playersactionsandchoices.FWEisperfectforanyoneyearningforachallenge.Expectlessloot,
moreinjuries,andafranticfightforsurvivalasyoustruggletomeetdailyneeds,andthatswithout
mentioningthenewweaponsandarmoursetshavebeenadded,witharebalancingoftheexisting
ones.DidyouliketheoldFalloutgames?Ifso,enjoythefortynewweaponsfrompreviousFallout
titlesthathavebeendistributedacrossthewasteland.Maybeyoujustwanttotakechemsallday
long?Ifthatsthecase,youllhavefortyplusnewdrugswithwhichtoexperiment.Theamountof
contentaddedbythismodissomindbogglinglyhugethatlistingthemallhereissimplyimpossible.
Fromnewweaponsandarmourtomajorgameplaychanges,FalloutWanderersEditiondoesnt
justmakeFallout3feellikeawholenewgame.Itmakesitfeellikethegameitalwaysshouldhave
been.
