This Month at ABA

Working with our Future BCBAs

Because Arizona Behavior & Autism is such a unique
center, both in size and environment; we are a great
place for future BCBAs to come in and work on their
supervision hours. Currently, we have 3 of them
working closely with us.

Paul: An instructor from the SALT Center (provides
services to students with learning disabilities) at the
UofA.

Lauren: A student at the UofA and a fulltime teacher
in Sunnyside District. She was with us during the
summer as well.

Joh Hector PhD: Has conducted over 200
experiments in language processing and is a
professor of qualitative and quantitative methods.
What is ABA, Applied Behavior Analysis?
Behavior analysis focuses on the principles that explain how learning takes place. Positive reinforcement is one
such principle. When a behavior is followed by some sort of reward, the behavior is more likely to be repeated.
Through decades of research, the field of behavior analysis has developed many techniques for increasing useful
behaviors and reducing those that may cause harm or interfere with learning.
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the use of these techniques and principles to bring about meaningful and
positive change in behavior.
Taken from http://www.autismspeaks.org/. This website is a great resource for all of those working/interacting
with those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
All parents: Most private schools have been notified
by an STO that evidence of elaborate tax credit
switching has surfaced. Additionally, there has been
some activity of parents paying donors to donate on
their childs behalf. This is a Federal offense. Please
be advised that illegal switching activity of any
sort will not be tolerated. This is precisely the type of
illegal behavior that could bring down the entire tax
credit scholarship program.

ARS 43-1503 A School Tuition Organization cannot
award, restrict or reserve scholarships solely on the
basis of a donors recommendation. A taxpayer may
not claim a tax credit if the taxpayer agrees to swap
donations with another tax payer to benefit either
taxpayers own dependent.

We at the ABA Center LLC, depend on these tax
credits to allow our students to attend and would feel a
great loss for so many children if this were no long
available.

Equine Therapy Internships
Wed like to introduce and thank our very first
intern, Kelsey from Prescott College, who is
actually coming to the end of her summer
internship with us. She has been working
with us both giving therapeutic lessons and
inside the center as a teaching assistant.

Emma, our second intern, is from Andrada
Polytechnic H.S., and has just started with us.
She will be performing general healthcare on
our wonderful therapy horses as well as
learning some social and language cues so
she can know how they are feeling.
Horse Spotlight
Dynamite has been with
Horses with Wings over 5
years! She has had a long
life filled with children;
before our program, she
was a kids barrel horse! She
is one of our smallest horses
and while she may look
young, she is actually over
28 years old! Looking good
Dynamite!
Equine Therapy AZ, Inc. Horses with Wings
Our summer horse camp went so well, that
we would like to continue doing
something like them throughout the year.

We will be using horses as the friends for
helping the kids to develop and practice
new skills.

It will be focusing on social skills and
interacting with our animals and will occur
once a week for about an hour.

Keep an eye on our website and facebook
page for details.

You wont want to miss these!
Benefits of therapeutic riding

There are many benefits that come with
therapeutic horseback riding. Its way more
than just sitting on a horse.

1. Increases in fine motor skills such as
dexterity in fingers.
2. Increases in gross motor skills, which is
the ability to use larger muscle groups.
3. Improvements in core strength.
4. Aids in balance and coordination.
5. The horse along with the staff and
volunteers create a social situation that
aids in building social skills.
6. Sensory integration is also worked on by
introducing the rider to various textures,
sounds, smells and sights.

This is exciting news
everyone!!

Horses with Wings will be having our
very first Arena Obstacle Challenge,
open to all those who ride!! There will be
food served and a ribbon and prize
ceremony after the challenge. There will
be 8 judged obstacle held in one of our
2
arenas, much like a trail class in a show.
