atalocalconferenceforEnglishteachers.Iwasverynervousand
notatallconfidentspeakinginfrontofmypeers.Idontreally
remembermuchaboutthepresentation,butsincethenIvegoneon
togivemorethan100talksatconferences,events,andseminars.
Imnowprettyhappyinfrontofaroomfullofstrangers,and
presentinghasbecomeoneofthemostenjoyablepartsofmyjob.
Thereareseveralgoodreasonstointroducepresentationand
publicspeakingpracticeintoourEFLandESLclasses.Thefirst
andmostimportantisthateffectivepresentationandpublic
speakingskillsareavaluablelifeskill.Manyofourlearnerswill
needtheminthefuture,andappreciatethechancetopracticethem
now.Presentationpracticealsoallowsteacherstointroduce
personalisationanddifferenttopicsintoclasses.Learnerscan
choosethecontenttheypresent,andthisbringsavarietyof
informationandideasintotheclassroom.Learnerscanlearnmore
abouteachother,andpresentationscanalsobeaneasywayto
breakupacourseandprovideachangeofpace.
Beforegivingapresentation,learnerswillhavetospendtime
drafting,editing,memorizing,andpracticingtheircontent.This
allowsthemtoreallyinternalizethelanguagewithoutthetediumor
stalenesssometimesassociatedwithdrillingandmemorization.In
addition,learnersareabletolistentotheirclassmatestalkingabout
variationsonatopic,givingthemusefulextensivelisteningpractice.
Becominganeffectivepresenterrequiresawarenessofeffective
presentingtechniques,havingmeaningfulcontenttodeliver,and
mostofall,lotsofpractice.Wecanprovideourlearnerswiththe
firstandthirdofthese,andguidethemastheyattempttoprovide
thesecond.

Oneofthemostpracticalwaystoteachpresentingskillsistobreak
thecomplexandsometimesoverwhelmingexperiencedowninto
discreteskills.Thismakesiteasytointroduceandpracticethem
