Apsara Dance, famous for powerful hand and feet movement, is a great example of Hindu
dance that is symbolic. Puppetry and shadow plays were also a favoured kind of
entertainment in previous centuries as the famed one known as Wayang from Indonesia.
Literature and the arts in some of Southeast Asia is quite affected by Hinduism brought to
them centuries past.

The Tai, coming late into Southeast Asia, brought with them some Chinese artistic
conventions, but they shortly discard them in favour of the Khmer and Mon customs, and the
only indications of their earlier contact with Chinese arts were in the style of their temples,
notably the tapering roof, and in their lacquerware.

Indonesia, despite conversion to Islam which opposes particular kinds of art, has retained
many kinds of Hindu-affected culture, practices, art and literature. An example is the
*Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) literature and like the Ramayana. This is also true for
mainland Southeast Asia (excluding Vietnam). It's been pointed out that Indonesian classical
arts and Khmer were concerned with depicting the life of the gods, but to the Southeast
Asian head the life of the gods was the life of the folks themselves-- joyous, earthy, however
divine.

South Asian Art and Culture
An inverted triangle going toward the equator from the snow bound Himalayan ranges of Asia
is formed by the Indian subcontinent. Known also as South Asia, the area includes the
countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan the Tibetan
highlands form part of the region. Stretching some 1,800 miles from north to south, and
nearly the same distance from west to east, the region is home to an ancient and diverse
group of cultures.

The artistic remains, composed of sensuous, often flamboyant bodies of women in addition
to holy image, accentuate the intermingling of the sacred and the secular in the artwork of
India.

India is the greatest single country of South Asia. Its now twenty four states show an ethnic
diversity comparable to that seen among the nations of Europe. The Tamil area of South
India has an artistic heritage that are fairly different from those, and a language, script,
musical convention, dance forms. It's this diversity that makes the artistic conventions of
India rewarding to follow and so complex.
The Appeal of Contemporary Art

With globalisation, contemporary art became a global occurrence. The view of contemporary
art as a 'Western merchandise' no longer applies. Art hearts aren't limited to a select group of
cultural capitals in the West, but all have mushroomed all around the world. Asian nations
may not share exactly the same culture, religion or political climate, but their growing
economic value on the world stage has found the development of contemporary art markets
in the region that just a couple of years past would have been inconceivable.
