Figure Q2(a) illustrates a planetary gear train used in an industrial application. Input shafts A and
B rotate at 350 and 400 rpm (revolutions per minute) in the directions shown. Figure Q2(b)
shows a 3-speed transmission with a drive shaft rotating in place at 450 rpm, carrying a cluster of
gears A, B, and C, which are fixed to this shaft. The output shaft is splined so that it may be
shifted along its axis by means of the shift link to engage any desired set of gears. Keep the
number of gear teeth in the range 15 to 100.
a) Determine the speed and direction of rotation of output shaft C.
(12.5 Marks)
b) Design the transmission (select the number of teeth on each gear) to produce output
speeds of 150, 350, and 550 rpm, and describe how the motion is transmitted (which
gears are used).

and their reciprocating masses are 50 kg, 60 kg and 50 kg respectively as shown in Figure Q3. In
order the engine to be in a complete balance, find:
(a) the mass of the reciprocating parts for the third cylinder
(12.5 Marks)
(b) the relative angular position of the cranks

a) By modeling the car as a simple mass-spring-damper system, estimate the effective mass,
m, of this corner of the car, the spring constant, k, the damping ratio, z, and the damping,
c.
(12.5 Marks)
b) He then takes the car out for a test drive on a road which he estimates has a sinusoidal
surface with amplitude of 3 cm which repeats every 2 m. What is the amplitude of
vibration that he would experience while travelling at 40 km/h on this road, and what is
the amplitude of the force transmitted through each wheel?
