What types of intellectual property are used at your organization? How are
they protected? What are the advantages and disadvantages of a
noncompete clause as opposed to a nondisclosure clause? What privacy
and security issues arise when conducting business on the Internet?

What types of intellectual property are used at your organization?
The Navy uses many kinds of intellectual properties, such as trademarks, copyright, and
trade secrets. We have licenses for the advertisement A Global Force for Good and
many trade secrets on our ships and the equipment that we use. We have copyrights
on work that we do and we recently trademarked SEAL Team 6, and Navy uniforms.
How are they protected?
They are protected through state and federal registration to prevent others from copying
them, trade secrets do not have to be registered they are protected by the TRIPS
agreement. Copyrights are protected by the Copyright Act of 1976 which is a federal
statute.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a noncompete clause as opposed
to a nondisclosure clause?
This disadvantage of a noncompete clause is that when an employee leaves they could
divulge secrets to a competitive business. A noncompete clause needs to be
enforceable to protect the employers information and trade secrets. The noncomplete
agreement laws are different in every state so you have to ensure it is within the state
law.
A nondisclosure clause is a must when starting up a business to ensure confidentiality
when information is shared with licensees or investors. This type of clause is only
binding to the parties that execute them.
What privacy and security issues arise when conducting business on the
Internet? Provide examples.
Some security and privacy issues that arise when conducting business on the Internet
are the chances for contracting a virus on the business computer and it can send out
spam emails or disable your computer, so be sure to install anti-virus software and keep
it up to date. Ensure there is a firewall installed to keep hackers from accessing
personal and financial data. Back up data on a regular basis in case your computer
malfunctions, stolen, or natural disaster.
When we had the 100 year flood here in Memphis, TN the Navy base flooded and we
were located on the first floor and the water was about 4 feet high and most people kept
their PC on the floor and we had to dispose of all of them and people lost important data
that was needed to perform day to day business.
