Grace and peace unto you!

As our spiritual journey continues to bring us closer to the goals of the Arise and Build
campaign, the successful education of Canaan's youth becomes paramount in shaping their
futures within the church and community. The old adage "it takes a village to raise a child"
highlights the personal commitment we are making as a church in accommodating our
young people spiritually, educationally, and culturally. Our God requires each of us to be
great students of His Word and great students in today's society as well.

"Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in
every society, in every family." - Kofi Annan

Taking the above foregoing stance of "knowledge is power and education is the key," we
encourage our youth to take education seriously. When our youth understand the connection
between increased knowledge and education, their visions, aspirations, and dreams become
the foundation for a good and fulfilling life. By God's grace and mercy, Canaan has and still
provides opportunities to assist in educating the mind and developing skills and talents for
our youth and their ministry. Opportunities such as tutoring, after school activities, personal
development classes, bible study, and Sunday school, will continue to be a part of the
positive pathway made for each youth that walks through the doors of this great church. God
is pleased when we contribute to the growth and spiritual wellbeing of our youth!

Accordingly, the new facility will not only be built with brick and mortar, but it will be a
refuge where we will be building up minds and spirits for our youth ministry. It is our
mission and responsibility to rise up from the ashes of mediocrity and keep the focus on
the mountaintop of education. Every youth deserves an education and the opportunity to
increase their knowledge every day of their precious lives. The combination of both builds
an infrastructure in the lives of our children.

In conclusion, to our youth, I say this - the potential for each one of you to succeed beyond
your wildest dreams is foreseeable. Great success stories are within your reach each time
you make an effort to succeed in your education, both spiritually and academically. With
God in your heart and mind, your desire to achieve in the educational arena is the key to
unlocking your future goals in life and the church. You are destined to experience the full
power of education's many rewards and recognition. You are the next generation on the
horizon and the power of education is in your hands. Knowing the value of education has the
capacity and power to change your life!

Procedures for reporting the death of a family member

1. During normal business hours, notify the Canaan church office of the death of your loved one.
The office staff will contact:
Pastor Bullock
Deacon Ministry
Bereavement Ministry Leader

2. A Bereavement Team will be notified and assigned (by proximity).

3. Team leader contacts the family to make arrangements for visitation.

4. Team leader informs the family to contact the Church office for any funeral arrangements or other
assistance.

5. Decisions concerning funerals or funeral related matters are to be made exclusively by the Pastor
or the Chairman of the Deacon Board.
Membership benefit privileges can be made if the deceased was an active member (regularly in
attendance and a financially contributing) member of the church.

There is a Ferguson near you. Many pundits are saying that the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo.,
has revealed troubling racial tensions in America. But the real scandal in Michael Browns shooting is that it
reveals what weve already known.

As conservative Republican Senator Rand Paul wrote about Ferguson: Anyone who thinks race does not skew
the application of criminal justice in this country is just not paying attention.

Ferguson is a suburb of St. Louis that is two-thirds African American. Its 53-person police force has only three
African Americans. Its mayor and five of six of its city council members are white. Its seven member all-
white school board has just closed the school that Michael Brown graduated from.
Across this country, African American parents warn their children, particularly their sons, that they have a bulls
eye on their T-shirt. They are more likely to be picked up, more likely to be arrested if stopped, more likely to be
jailed if arrested, and more likely to be jailed, if charged. This isnt just in Ferguson; this likely is true in the
town where you live. While the investigation is not complete, what we know is that Michael Brown was
unarmed.

Imagine if that had been your son.

The reaction of the police in Ferguson to demonstrators looked like a military, not a police response. Police are
trained to use the least force necessary. The county police in Ferguson acted like an occupying military force,
responding to a threat by hitting hard and escalating, firing tear gas at residents standing on their own lawns.
Police carry identity and name badges so residents can know them. Fergusons force was decked out in
camouflage as if it were facing not outraged citizens, but foreign guerrillas.
The excesses in Ferguson arent unique. Across this country, the Department of Homeland Security and the
Pentagon have been providing military type weaponstanks, artillery, mortars, tear gasand arming SWAT
teams in local police forces.

No one should condone violence, whether by the police or the people. But everyone must understand the rage
expressed by the residents of Ferguson. Whole sections of our cities and suburbs are like kindling, needing only
a spark to flame up.

The urban middle class in this country has been under economic assault. In Ferguson, a middle class suburb, the
poverty level now is at 22 percent. Homeowners have been victimized by bankers peddling fraudulent loans.
Good jobs are scarce. African American unemployment remains about twice that of whites; for the young it is
even higher. Their schools are underfunded. They lack affordable day care, decent public transport, adequate
training and educational opportunity.

When people see no way out, then an unrepresentative, discriminatory, heavily armed police force only adds to
the alienation.

Ferguson should lead to a review of police hiring, arming and procedures across the country. But that alone is
not enough. We need a new urban initiative, a renewed focus on the poor. We need a plan for jobs, decent
schools, and affordable public transport. For decades, weve chosen to lock people up rather than lift them up, to
build first-class jails and second-class schools. Michael Brown was a victim of that reality. The people of
Ferguson have every reason to be outraged. And there is a Ferguson near you.

Brothers in harmony
On August 7th, a bus load of Canaan's members and youths attended a Philadelphia Phillies
game. The Phillies played against the Houston Astros in the last of a three game series. With
most in attendance adorning the signature Phillies gear and colors, there was an air of excitement
swirling around as the group prepared for a great evening of Major League Baseball in the big
city.

After trailing the Astros most of the game, it seemed as if a loss was imminent for the Phillies. The
score illuminating from the scoreboard was 5-2, in favor of the Astros. Then in the bottom of the
8th inning, with bases loaded and a 3-2 count, Phillies Ryan Howard hit a grand slam into the
stands of left centerfield, lifting the Phillies over the Astros by a 6-5 score. The Phillies held on to
the lead and ended a 3 game sweep of the Astros. What a way to win a ball game. Way to go,
Phillies!
