Q1: Based on the novel you have studied,

write about an event that fills you with joy.

Based on the novel, The Railway Children by
Edith Nesbit, an event that fills me with
joy is when Roberta is kind and thoughtful to
her family members and strangers.

In this novel, Roberta asked the driver and the
fireman to mend the broken toy engine. When
Peter gave Roberta half his toy engine, she took
the broken half. She wanted to get it mended for
her brother. So she met the driver and the
fireman to ask their help. They agreed to mend
the broken toy. Some weeks later, she took
Peter and Phyllis to meet the driver and the
fireman. Peter was excited to see his engine
mended.

Furthermore, Roberta hid the story about her
imprisoned father from her brother and sister.
Roberta went to the station to collect some old
magazines. Perks wrapped the magazines with
an old newspaper. On the way home, she
stopped to rest. She read the newspaper. It is
about her father. Roberta learnt that her father
was in prison for spying. Nevertheless, Roberta
did not tell Peter and Phyllis about it. She did
not want them to be upset like her.

Finally, Roberta made Jim comfortable in the
tunnel. Jim had a broken leg and cannot walk.
So, she made Jim comfortable by put her
petticoat under his broken leg. She talked to
him and got the necessary information to help
him. She found out that he is Jim from
Northumberland.

In conclusion, it is clear that Roberta is kind
and thoughtful to her family members and

Based on the novel, The Railway Children by

learnt is we should be kind and thoughtful to
everyone, including strangers. This is seen
in Roberta.

Q4. Based on the novel that you have studied, describe an event that touches your heart
most. Give evidence from the text to support your answer.

The novel that I have chosen is The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit. An event that touches my
heart most in this novel is when the children go around the village to collect gifts for Perks to
surprise him on his birthday.
Old Mrs. Ransome initially refuses to give give anything because she claims that nobody
remembers her birthday. Bobbie and Phyllis give Mrs. Ransome some roses as her birthday
present. This gesture of love from the children touches her heart. In return she fills the gift box with
red apples as her gift for Perks. She also gives away a pram which is meant for her late grandchild.
The children brought the presents that they have collected to Perks house. They wanted to
give Perks a surprise by jumping out and saying Happy Birthday. Perks was initially furious, but is
touched when the children convinced him that the gifts are a mark of respect from the villagers. The
people appreciate his kindness, diligence and politeness.
All these are done out of love for Perks who does not keep track of his birthday and only
cares for his family. This event is indeed very touching for me.

Q5. Based on the novel that you have studied, write about a theme that you find most
interesting. Give evidence from the text to support your answer.

The novel that I have chosen is The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit. The theme I find interesting
is to be courageous and brave. This is portrayed by Peter himself. I like this character because he is
courageous and brave.

Firstly, Peter shows great courage when he suggests to Bobbie and Phyllis to enter the dark
tunnel to search for the boy in a red shirt. He also suggests that if the train comes they should stand
flat against the wall.
Secondly / In another instance, when train almost meets with a horrible accident, it is Peters
idea to warn the train by waving something red. He knows red means danger and that the train will
stop. Peter and his sister try to stop the train by standing on the railway line. This shows that Peter is
being courageous and brave.
Thirdly, one night a Peter and his sisters are caught stealing coal by the Station Master, and
when questioned, he reveals that it is his idea to steal the coal. This shows that Peter has the
courage to admit his mistake and does not put the blame on others.
All this shows that Peter is courageous and brave. This theme is the most interesting for me.
I would like to emulate Peter so that I can help others in distress.

SAVING THE TRAIN

One day, the children were walking by the railway fence. On both sides of the railway line there
was a hillside with many trees. Suddenly, they heard a noise and a tree started moving slowly
downwards. Then other trees, grass, stones and a big rock started moving too. Finally, half the
hillside crashed down till it was a pile on the railway line. When Peter realised that the 11.29
train had not gone by yet, he suggested that they wave something red because red means
danger. Phyllis and Bobbie's petticoats were red so Peter cut them into six pieces and put them
on sticks. They pushed two of the sticks into piles of rocks they had set on the line and the
children took the rest.
When the lines began to shake, the flags fell over. Bobbie realised that nobody on the train
would see. So, she grabbed one of the fallen flags and stood on the line waving frantically. The
train stopped just twenty metres in front of her. Peter and Phyllis explained what had happened
to the driver who said that they were brave and clever children.
