ZEN 111 BBL PROF. JESSA MAY ESPINOLA I. Five Types of Speech Disorders Dysprosody is the rarest neurological speech disorder. It is characterized by alterations in intensity, in the timing of utterance segments, and in rhythm, cadence, and intonation of words. The changes to the duration, the fundamental frequency, and the intensity of tonic and atonic syllables of the sentences spoken, deprive an individual's particular speech of its characteristics. The cause of dysprosody is usually associated with neurological pathologies such as brain vascular accidents, cranioencephalic traumatisms, and brain tumors. Muteness is complete inability to speak Speech sound disorders involve difficulty in producing specific speech sounds (most often certain consonants, such as /s/ or /r/), and are subdivided into articulation disorders(also called phonetic disorders) and phonemic disorders. Articulation disorders are characterized by difficulty learning to produce sounds physically. Phonemic disorders are characterized by difficulty in learning the sound distinctions of a language, so that one sound may be used in place of many. However, it is not uncommon for a single person to have a mixed speech sound disorder with both phonemic and phonetic components. Stuttering affects approximately 1% of the adult population Voice disorders are impairments, often physical, that involve the function of the larynx or vocal resonance.

THE TOWEL LADY by Janet S. Tiger
THE TOWEL LADY You know, a new towel is a wonderful thing. Come on, you ladies all know what Im talking about! Now, I can understand why the men are muttering to themselves, because no man can appreciate a good towel. But you ladies know what Im saying is true! Only another woman knows what Im talkin about(She holds out the towel to illustrate.)
Isnt it beautiful when its brand new? Its so soft and good smellin. It has a youthful way about it, kinda sassy, but innocent. You men are sittin there wonderin why the hell you came to lsiten to some old woman talk about the laundry, but if you listened for once in your lives, maybe youd learn something.
See this towel? I just bought it today. It aint ever been touched by any hands cept mine. Well, maybe somebody touched it in the store first, but since I didnt see it FRANCISCO, NEMENCIO JUNIOR M. AUGUST 27, 2014 ZEN 111 BBL PROF. JESSA MAY ESPINOLA and it didnt leave no mark, it dont matter.(examining the edges) Its perfect. I never buy those seconds with their funny lines down the middle and the frayed bottoms. They dont last as long.
Men never did understand towels. And thats because they treat their towels just like they treat their women. ........
The Not So Perfect Child by D. M. LARSON
(Quiet anger) You hate me don't you? I am never good enough for you. (Anger builds) No matter what I do it's not as good as my sister. I always have to hear how she would have done it better. Or how she already did it better. (Hurt) Why does she want to ruin my life? She just wants to blot me out like I was some sort of mistake... I'm just a copy... A copy of a copy... Not as good as the original... Not as good as you. (Sarcastic and bitter) You are so perfect... Everyone around me is so perfect... And there was nothing left over for me... I am the leftover failures... I am the fatty waste you toss to the dogs.
FRANCISCO, NEMENCIO JUNIOR M. AUGUST 27, 2014 ZEN 111 BBL PROF. JESSA MAY ESPINOLA (Fury) Everyone hates me! Why does everyone think I am so horrible... (Shakes and tries to hold back the fury) Probably because I am. A horrible creature doomed to walk this earth and suffer... For you.
(Cries uncontrollably... Struggles to speak)
I'm hurting... Hurting so bad inside. Cut off from everyone ... Punished for some past life wrongs... What did I do in a past life to deserve this... Or am I paying for the sins of my father... And mother... Am I your sin? Or do I remind you of some sin you want to forget?
(Anger builds)
Or I am a disappointment that keeps disappointing. I even disappoint myself. (Furious) I will never be my sister. I don't to be her. I hate everything about her! (Cries... Sadness) But I don't want to be me either. Sometimes I want to fade away... Become a shadow... Fading away... Forgotten... Maybe if you forget about me I won't make you so sad anymore.
(She hears a knock at her door. She tries to fix her up ... Wipes away the tears) What's that mom? I was just watching a video... Was it too loud? I'm sorry.... I'm really sorry.
FRANCISCO, NEMENCIO JUNIOR M. AUGUST 27, 2014 ZEN 111 BBL PROF. JESSA MAY ESPINOLA IV. 5 EXAAMPLES OF SPEECH GAMES/ACTIVITIES
"Finish It! It is a group activity that involves adults with high level expressive language deficits. The clinician begins by presenting a topic and saying a few sentences to begin a story. Going around the group, each person adds his/her part to the story. The story can be long or short, but each person's contribution must be relevant to the topic and in proper sequence. This activity can be used with people with dysarthria to practice speech clarity; for those with sequencing or thought organization goals; and as mentioned, for those with expressive language goals. The clinician encourages appropriate responses by asking for clarification, expansion of ideas, etc.; whatever the particular goal. I have also found this activity successful and fun for the young adult population. Sensory Feedback One essential speech therapy technique is the use of sensory feedback. Quite simply, it helps your child to become more aware of the sounds that he is producing and how he is producing them. For example, the SLP might use auditory feedback. She might record a sample of your childs vocalizations and play them back. She would then play a recording of the same sounds, pronounced correctly, so that he can hear the difference. Your child can also benefit from visual feedback, or watching himself or others produce sounds. Tactile feedback is also essential. Proper articulation demands the correct placement of the tongue and other oral structures. But it can often be difficult to instruct a child to place his tongue in a certain way, for example. Instead, try using Speech Buddies tools with him. These are devices customized to individual sounds that are inserted into the mouth to provide a target for the tongue. Articulation Speech Therapy Activities In addition to tactile feedback, your childs speech therapist will use other speech therapy activities for articulation to help him pronounce certain sounds. The SLP might FRANCISCO, NEMENCIO JUNIOR M. AUGUST 27, 2014 ZEN 111 BBL PROF. JESSA MAY ESPINOLA clearly state a word and ask that your youngster repeat it. This will be done multiple times to give your child plenty of practice. Oral Motor Therapy Techniques Some speech disorders are characterized by poor manipulation of the oral motor muscles. This can not only interfere with your childs speech, but his swallowing and feeding abilities as well. Oral motor exercises and facial massage may be used to improve muscle tone. The speech therapist might also work on introducing foods of various textures and temperatures in order to raise oral awareness. Oral motor therapy techniques typically emphasize speech therapy activities that pair movements with sounds. For example, your child might be asked to pay close attention to the rounding of his lips as he produces the sh sound.
Language Intervention Speech and language disorders can not only impact a childs ability to articulate clearly, but also his ability to understand language and express himself appropriately. Some kids might have trouble putting their thoughts into words, following or giving directions, or narrating a story. Your childs SLP will encourage language acquisition by using books, role-play games, and similar speech therapy activities. Your child might work on building complete sentences, acquiring new vocabulary, or telling a story with a beginning, middle, and end. As always, remember to ask the SLP about speech therapy activities to do at home for language intervention. One recent study published in the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology concluded that parental involvement in language intervention is critical for the childs development.
