DEVELOPING SUSTAINABLE LEADERSHIP
Professor Brent Davies
The em phasis on short-term accountability m easures has often prioritised
the use of short-term m anagem ent strategies to m eet test and O fsted
m easures. M oving aw ay from short-term ism to the m ore fundam ental
consideration of sustainable leadership is the focus of this presentation.
W hile it w ould be naive or unrealistic to suggest that school leaders do not
have to respond to short-term accountability targets and m anagerial
im peratives,it is im portant that these responses are set against sustainable
leadership factors.I propose nine sustainable leadership factors that should
be developed and deployed to battle w ith the dangers of m anagerial short-
term ism ! These factors have been draw n from recent research of sustainable
and strategically successful schools.
SYSTEM S LEA D ERSH IP
Professor David Hopkins
H ard Federations,executive headships,partnering schools in challenging
circum stances are all exam ples of the changing role of leaders in schools.
These system leadership roles are part of the landscape of w ider school
im provem ent approaches being adapted. This em ergent practice w ill be
articulated and patterns of system leadership w ill be explored.H eadteachers
and schools exam ining these future roles and contributions w ill find this a
valuable insight as they contem plate new challenges.
LEA D ERSH IP FO R TH E SELF-EVA LU ATIN G SC H O O L
Professor John MacBeath
In England,there is a new relationship w ith schools,w ith self-evaluation now
seen by O fsted as the key to im provem ent and sustainability.M aking self-
evaluation an integral part of day-to-day classroom practice rem ains a
longer-term proposition, how ever,as it is still regarded as an event and an
extra im position. The challenge for leadership is to help teachers, pupils and
parents to tell the school's ow n story,in the language of w hat professionals
value and not w hat can be easily m easured.Inspirational exam ples from
school practice in this and other countries w ill be draw n on to illustrate w hat
a genuinely new relationship m ight look like.
