A PROUD TRADITION OF PARTNERSHIP F O R O V E R 1 5 0 Y E A R S I t was just a year ago when Saint Johns kicked off its current capi- tal campaign entitled "Forward Ever Forward" with the abbey and the university partnering together in this important endeavor. We rejoice in over 150 years of pastoral, educational, and cultural leadership and service to the world, and we look forward to a future where this tradition continues. As Abbot John said last fall, with this capital campaign, Saint Johns wishes to position itself for ever greater service to a rapidly changing student demographic, a dynamically new learn- ing environment, and unique challenges for the Church and society. The abbey campaign is part of the Saint Johns University, Hill Museum and Manu- script Library (HMML), and School of TheologySeminary campaign. Though the abbeys goal in this campaign is modest compared to the universitys, the funds we wish to raise are crucially important to a healthy future for us. At last falls abbeys campaign kickoff event, the abbeys subprior, Br. David Paul Lange, OSB, gave an inspiring presentation introducing the goals of the abbeys campaign. Much of what fol- lows in this newsletter is taken from that address. I invite you to spend time look- ing over the newsletter and considering how you might be able to partner with the abbey in accomplishing these goals. We cant overstate how essential your support is to realizing the innovative programs that are part of our imagina- tion for the future. We need your help. 2 Abbey Development Newsletter ve monks to the Minnesota Territory. They settled along the banks of the Mississippi in Saint Cloud and shortly after moved to the site known as the In- dianbush overlooking Lake Sagatagan. In those early years, the monks, along with everybody else, endured great ad- versity: bitterly cold winters, isolation, natural disasters such as the grasshop- per plague, and economic hardship, but they persisted. And the rest, as they say, is history. From its humble beginnings, Saint Johns became a thriving Benedic- tine monastery with inuence through- out Minnesota, across the country, and around the world. Today, this same determination, this desire to make a difference, coupled with an abiding love of God and a steadfast commitment to the Church and to the larger society, is the inspira- tion behind Saint Johns Abbey. That spirit is present in all our apostolates, in the Prep School, the University, the Liturgical Press, in our parish aposto- late, in Trinity Benedictine Monastery in Japan, in the ecumenical and interre- ligious work ministry that we do. The entire Saint Johns community is still invigorated by Bonifaces pioneer- ing spirit. He made his share of mis- takes but he was never daunted by his failures. Our forebears took to heart his bold visionForward, always forward, everywhere forward!and so do we. In a rapidly changing world Saint Johns is constantly renewing and reinventing itself to meet the needs of people. We have been blessed by a long tradition of faith, innovation, and excel- lence that began with the establishment of the monastery, seminary, prepara- tory school, and a liberal arts college. Over the years, Saint Johns has become known for its leadership roles in theo- logical education, liturgical renewal, ecumenism, interfaith dialogue, liberal arts education, the holistic development of students, its commitment to environ- mental stewardship, and the preserva- tion of arts and culture. Other Saint Johns initiatives include the rst station for what would become Minnesota Public Radio, the Jay Phil- lips Center for Interfaith Learning, the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, the Saint Johns University Pottery Studio, the Saint Johns Boys Choir, the Saint Johns Outdoor University (Arboretum), the National Catholic Youth Choir, and The Saint Johns Bible, to name a few. In naming these I am not trying to give you a grocery list of achievements but am backing up the claim that Saint Johns continues to be a thoughtful, energized, and inno- vative community. You will also note that I have bracketed chapter seven in the Rule of Saint Benedict on humility! Dont worrynot for long. Last fall we publicly announced the abbey portion of the total Saint Johns capital campaignForward Ever Forward. The goals of this campaign will strengthen the abbeys ability to respond to the needs of this new day with condence, energy, and creative imagination. We are and want to be an essential leaven in the Church and in the larger culture. I point to three elements of our cam- paign that have special urgency. We are in the process of renewing the Breuer monastery building that has served us the campaign for saint johns abbey: Its All About Mission Abbot John Klassen, OSB, PhD S aint Johns was founded by an enterprising, energetic monk-priest with ambitious dreams, an indomitable spirit, and a bold plan. Archabbot Boni- face Wimmer, OSB, was a true pioneer. In 1846 Father Boniface and a band of eighteen young aspirants to the Benedictine life left Rotterdam. The passage across the Atlantic Ocean on the steamship U.S. Iowa was turbulent and harrowing. Upon his arrival in New York City, Father Boniface was greeted with discouragement by several priests who tried to persuade him to abandon his plans. Go back to Germany! Monastic life will never work here! Fortunately for us, he persevered. It was on October 24, 1846, that Boniface invested those eighteen men as novices, establishing Saint Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the rst Benedictine monastery in the United States. But his vision did not end there. He went on to found ten Benedic- tine abbeys in the United States. At his death he was praised as The greatest American missionary of the nineteenth century. Today, there are over thirty abbeys and monasteries that take their roots from Archabbot Wimmer, includ- ing Saint John's Abbey. In 1856 Archabbot Wimmer sent Archabbot Boniface Wimmer Summer 2014 3 well for sixty years. As of this writing we have just completed the rst step in that re- newal, the replacement of a tired, worn-out elevator. However, we have a long way to go to obtain the funding for the re-articulation of the buildings HVAC system, for making it truly energy conservative and efcient, and in updating the building to serve Saint Johns for the next fty years. A second key element of our campaign is reinventing our program for attracting candidates to our monastic community. In this time of rapid technological change, the ubiquitous nature of social media, and the importance of the Internet, it is more of a challenge to lift ones visibility above all the other competing messages so that one who is truly called to monastic life is even aware of what a monastic vocation is. What follows in this newsletter is a description of a new, integrated approach to creating this mes- sage, and then attracting those who express an interest in a monastic vocation. A third element is the creation of an endowment for land stewardship. Anybody who knows Saint Johns is aware of the phenomenal beauty of the campus, the hard- wood forest, the lakes, and the ecosystem that these represent. At present the annual required funding for renewing the forest and caring for the land comes from the abbeys general budget as a line item. This is an ongoing cost that will become increas- ingly difcult to fund. As a society, we have tended to defer the costs of caring for the environment to the future. As a Benedictine community, our approach needs to and will be proactive. As you read this newsletter I invite you to join us as we continue the important work started by Archabbot Boniface Wimmer more than 150 years ago. We are in search of the next band of pioneers who will ensure that Saint Johns thrives and soars. With your sup- port we can shape the course of Saint Johns and our world for generations to come. seeking god through a common life of prayer, study and work, giving witness to Christ and the gospel, in service to the church and the world. T H E C A M P A I G N F O R S A I N T J O H N ' S A B B E Y 4 Abbey Development Newsletter I n the Rule of Saint Benedict, a guide written for living out the gospels, Saint Benedict instructs his monks that they should live by the work of their own hands. One might ask, then, why exactly does Saint Johns Abbey need your help with this Forward Ever Forward capital campaign? In Saint Benedicts time, monaster- ies simply ran a farm to provide for themselves and their few guests the food and other necessities for living in a small, quiet community. Now these 1,500-plus years after Saint Bene- dict, we monks of Saint Johns nd ourselves in a much different world and in a much different situation. If Saint Johns were merely just a small monastery, we probably could man- age ne with just operating our own farm as we did in our early years. In a few places around the world today Benedictine monks do live almost entirely by the work of their own hands as they did in Benedicts day. If Saint Johns Abbey were small enough and there werent tens of thousands of visitors every year, and there wasnt a publishing house, and a manuscript- rescue mission, and a world-renowned church, and a handwritten Bible, and an abbey guesthouse, and an ecumeni- cal institute, and a liberal arts college and School of TheologySeminary, and a prep school, and a good number of parishes, chaplaincies, and mission outreachnot to mention outreach to monasteries all around the worldthe answer might just be Yes, the monks at Saint Johns Abbey could live by the work of their own hands as in Bene- dicts time. We might be able to grow and raise our own food, maintain a few small buildings on our own, and live off the grid away from everyone else. But, obviously, this isnt the case with Saint Johns Abbey. Our beliefs are the same as they were in Saint Benedicts time, but our outreach, support, and sponsorship of all these programs and endeavors makes Saint Johns Abbey one of the most involved, dynamic, active, and inuential mon- asteries in the world. Inspired by our founder, Archabbot Boniface Wimmer, OSB, who, over 150 years ago, coined the phrase Forward, always forward, every- where forward, the monks of Saint Johns Abbey continue to be inspired by our forebears and seek to respond to the worlds deepest hungers for learning, for believing, and for hoping in the future. From ministering to immigrant Catholics in what was then the new Territory of Minnesota back in 1856, and opening their rst school to ve local students, the monks have kept taking the next steps to build and to serve churches and to provide the best educational programs. Though they may have started small, it was never the intention of the rst monks of Saint Johns to think small. In 1953, a little over 100 years from their ar- rival in central Minnesota, Abbot Baldwinwhen imagining a future Abbey and University Church for this campuswrote in his famous letter, The Benedictine tradition at its best challenges us to think boldly. And so it is here at Saint Johns even today, some sixty years later. From the beginning, it has been the distinct charism of the monks of Saint Johnsmore so than many other cloistered monasteriesto engage directly with people, to teach and minister to them, to pray with and for them, to offer respite and sustenance and inspiration, and to involve them in all sorts of ways in one ever-changing, dynamic, collective endeavor to give glory to God in the short time they have on earth. If self-interest and the path of least resistance were the goal, we would simply have a dairy farm on our acre- age to serve the simple needs of the monks and the few guests who might happen by. However, the kinds of endeavors Saint Johns undertakes require enor- mous time and effort and great sacri- ce. But because these endeavors are good and holy, they also bring great joy. The monks are proud of what has been accomplished, while also real- izing that what has been accomplished has been achieved only with the great help of friends, neighbors, and alums. If what we are about is worthy, if dwelling on the Word of God daily is valuable to the rest of the people of a charism like no other: think boldly with us Br. David Paul Lange, OSB, subprior Summer 2014 5 God, if teaching and preaching and ministering and working with our hands and praying daily for the good of others is a good thingin short, if its a good thing that the oasis that is Saint Johns is herethen its even better that it involves all of you in some way. And so we thank you for your help and ask for your continued assistance. We now ask that you partner further with the abbey in achieving our Forward Ever Forward campaign goals. what are our needs as we move FORWARD EVER FORWARD? To further the abbeys mission of faith, leadership, and service to Church and society, and to sustain its monastic witness for generations to come, the abbey seeks support for the following priorities: people (p. 6) places (p. 7, 8) & programs (p. 9, 10) h i l l

I N S T I T U T E T H E C A M P A I G N F O R S A I N T J O H N ' S A B B E Y P erhaps rst and foremost, given the innite variety of other vocations available to young men today, it is critical that we marshal new resources and new strategies in attracting the next generation of vibrant, prayerful, loving and hardworking monks. It is as true today as it was in Saint Benedicts day: Monastic life in the 21st century is a viable and incredibly blessed way to follow Christ, but its easy for that message to get drowned out, to be dismissed for lack of infor- mation or a meaningful connection. To make sure men from their mid-20s to their early 40s all over the country hear the invitation to monastic life, we need to build on our strengths and creativity and devise new strategies for recruiting new vocations going forward. With this next generation of monks, Saint Johns Abbey will have an even greater future to move ever forward, and do so with the vibrancy we envision. Please help promote monastic voca- tions with your nancial and prayerful support. S ince our founding, the monks have taken what can only be called a more ministerial rather than monetary view of their service. Much of the monks work, espe- cially at the prep school and university, was offered at low or reduced compen- sation. Up until the turn of the millen- nium, when our demographics changed noticeably, the monks had been giving back to the prep school and univer- sity over halfand as much as 80 percentof their salaries, to support the students in our schools and help families afford the cost of a strong and Catholic Benedictine education. It has been estimated that since the founding of the university, the monks of Saint Johns have collectively given over $40 million out of their salaries to help with nancial aid especially, and, as a result, are considered the top do- nors to both institutions. We are proud of this contribution and the dedicated service that has allowed our schools to become the great and stable institutions they have become. It is not an under- statement to say that the prep school and university are what they are today because of the monks. Even when retired, our elderly monks continue to dedicate their lives to praying for the many needs of friends, alums, benefactors, and the world. They are also still a vital part of the campus community, living right here at Saint Johns in the care center in Saint Raphael Hall. Having evolved into a leaner com- munity than we were in 1960, though, the smaller number of younger monks need some very real assistance in caring for the larger number of senior monks as they grow older and need more care. Creating and maintaining a nursing care facility in the monastery comes at a cost, but, in doing so, we have found it to be far more cost effective than the alternative. And we cant imagine not caring for our senior monks, and any monk who needs nursing care, right here at home. You can show your appreciation for all that the retired monks have done through your contribution to this endowment. people: vocations people: abbey healthcare & retirement endowment $890,000 NEEDED TO COMPLETE THIS GOAL $3 MILLION NEEDED TO COMPLETE THIS GOAL 6 Abbey Development Newsletter Summer 2014 7 I n the last campaign our top priority and largest goal was the Saint Johns Abbey Guesthouse and all the pastoral and spiritual ministry that came with it for our alums, oblates, friends, and benefactors, as well as for the broader Church. This time, it is essential that we focus our attention on our own living quarters, now that the primary resi- dence designed by Marcel Breuer is some sixty-ve years old and showing its age. The monastic residence build- ing is home to the majority of the 132 monks of the abbey who are serving as faculty, ministers, administrators, or are at the Saint Johns School of TheologySeminary as students prepar- ing for future service, as well as home for retired monks not yet in the health center. The monastery residence also serves guest monks from around the world who have come to Saint Johns to further their education. Everyone is aware of the upkeep and ongoing repairs needed to maintain a home. Built in the late 1950s, the mon- astery residence is no different. It is in great need of refurbishing, requiring new insulated thermal windows, new electrical wiring, an upgrade to new energy-efcient mechanical systems, as well as new plumbing. Given the building's 66,576 gross square feet, coupled with the nature of the build- ing's construction, such upgrades are not cheap, but they are essential. They will give the community good housing for the next 60 years and more while it continues to serve our schools and the Church at large. When we began planning for the construction of the monastery building and the Abbey Church in the 1950s, the monks hired a modernist architect specically because of his orientation toward functionalism and an honest use of materials. For the rst time in the history of architecture, a design style had emerged that matched the philosophy and theology of a monastic community. Here, nally, was an aesthetic that married form with function, which stripped away everything that wasnt necessary to the purpose of the build- ing, and it did so with an honesty and simplicity and integrity that was unparalleled in the history of design and perfectly mirrored our monastic sensibilities and values. Fortunately for us, the Marcel Breuer design for the monastic resi- dence is still perfectly suited to monas- tic life. After upgrading the plumbing, and electricity, and insulation, and mechanical systems, the shape of the spaces within it are still worthy of a monastery. As they are, the rooms are lled with natural light. The clay-brick and wooden oors and wall-to-wall windows speak of a profound regard for simplicity and nature, for framing the world around us in a way that has an uncanny ability to inspire the human spirit to prayer. The size of the rooms still encourage living simply, without a lot of worldly possessions, and to that end the building still challenges us to remember who we are and what we are all about. In short, we cannot imagine living anywhere else, not if were thinking practically and economically. To be in such close proximity to the church, our schools, and the guesthouse is essential, and it would be unthinkable to leave everything behind and build something else from scratch on the other side of the lake, as some have suggested. With some upgrades and renovations, the Breuer residence will serve us and the next generation of monks extremely well, allowing us, in turn, to continue serving others through our apostolates right here on campus. Please consider partnering with us in this undertaking by donating toward our funding goal. pl aces: monastery renovation $4 MILLION NEEDED TO COMPLETE THIS GOAL T H E C A M P A I G N F O R S A I N T J O H N ' S A B B E Y 8 Abbey Development Newsletter T hat the land here at Saint Johns is beautiful is no secret. We are deeply committed to caring for the part of creation that has been entrusted to us through the practice of environmental stewardship and sustainable living. From the Rule, Saint Benedict very clearly counsels his monks to treat all the goods and vessels of the monastery as though they were vessels of the altar. To our way of thinking, this absolutely includes the land that is shared with thousands of visitors every year people who come to hike, sh, ski, canoe or swim, including 8,000 school children who visit the arboretum. If you compare it to the State Park Trail system, the Chapel Trail that leads out to the Stella Maris Chapel across the lake from our main campus is the most used trail in all of Minnesota. More people come to hike that trail than any other trail in the state. P erhaps youve heard it at Mass, at graduation, or even during an af- ternoon practice session by one of the monks or one of the universitys music studentsthe glorious and beautiful sounds of the Abbey and University Churchs pipe organ. But after over To care for such a natural treasure in a way that allows the 2,800 acres to remain open and free to all visitors, while at the same time overseeing its sustainability, is a challenge. Forward Ever Forward seeks support for care of all of our land, including the wetlands, lakes, oak savanna, prairie, and forests. Reforestation of the hardwoods will be a priority in the coming decades as certain species will no longer be able to tolerate the heat of a changing climate in Minnesota. We will need to encour- age the growth of trees that can survive in warmer temperatures, even as we maintain the trails and emergency roads in the woods and wetlands. The Forward Ever Forward cam- paign will help assure future gen- erations of a cleaner environment, a sustainable forest and clean lakes, and a high regard for Gods gift of creation. Please support these efforts! fty years of use, our famous Holt- kamp pipe organ is in need of both repair andperhaps not as widely knowncompletion. A new division of pipes would al- low for the full volume of sound suited to the very large volume of the Abbey Church. The expansion of the organ instrument would also complete the original design of the organ builder. Saint Johns trains the largest num- ber of liturgical organists in the Mid- west. Completing the organ will not only enhance the liturgical function of the church, but also further improve the quality of our liturgical organist program at the university. A larger instrument for concerts, crowded litur- gies, and celebrations will be stunning. We invite anyone who is a lover of music to contribute to this part of the campaign! $500,000 NEEDED TO COMPLETE THIS GOAL $1 MILLION NEEDED TO COMPLETE THIS GOAL pl aces: land stewardship & endowment pl aces: pipe organ completion & renovation M issionary outreach has always been a major and important part of the work of the monks of Saint Johns. Originally, Saint Johns was founded as a mission to care for the pastoral and educational needs of Ger- man immigrants, and we have contin- ued that work in one way or another for over 150 years. Our most recent missionary work is through the Saint Johns Benedic- tine Volunteer Corps (BVC), founded in 2003. This program provides Saint Johns University alumni with volunteer opportunities at Benedictine monaster- ies across the world. Volunteers begin their commitment with a two-week mo- nastic experience program here at Saint Johns, followed by an assignment to another Benedictine monastery (some current sites include Guatemala, India, New Jersey, Italy, Ireland, Kenya, Aus- tralia, and Tanzania). Over the years, a total of eighteen countries, some with multiple sites, have served as locations for BVC assignments; and more than 125 volunteers have provided their ef- forts in the course of this program. Once at their program site, BVC members join the Benedictine religious host community for meals and for at least one of the days prayer services or Mass. Each volunteer then spends be- tween 30 to 40 hours per week with the apostolic work of the host monastery. During the time at their assignment, not only is the community where they are serving being helped, but the lives of the volunteers are immensely inspired and affected. You can contribute to the BVC by your nancial support. One possibility is to sponsor a volunteer with a $6,000 annual contribution. Such a gift will cover the cost of one volunteer for one year. As a sponsor, a volunteer will be assigned to you and keep in regular contact with you throughout their ser- vice. But regardless, either as a sponsor or just someone who wants to support this marvelous program through any range of gift, please consider a donation to assist with this important outreach program. $425,000 NEEDED TO COMPLETE THIS GOAL $500,000 NEEDED TO COMPLETE THIS GOAL progr a ms: benedictine volunteer corps progr a ms: trinity benedictine monastery fujimi, japan I n Japan were spreading the word of the gospels through incredible out- reach. These young men stand on the shoulders of those Johnnies who have gone before them as Benedictine volunteers: 125 alumni in all. Now entering its twelfth O ver the past few months abbey leadership has been carefully studying the communitys approach to vocation ministry, and on June 1, a new model was ofcially launched. As one might imagine, vocation ministry has changed dramatically over the past few years, demanding a need for a team approach. Br. Paul-Vincent Niebauer has returned to the ofce as director. He is joined by Br. David Allen as assistant director in charge of Saint Johns University and campus ministry relations. Br. Eric Pohlman will serve as ofce manager, coordi- nating all scheduling and responding to rst online contacts. Jason Ziegler is in charge of communications and marketing, including website and social media and all print media. Brs. There are two items in particular that illustrate our strength: First, two monasteries have been added as new BVC sitesMount Saint Benedicts in Trinidad and New Norcia Abbey in Western Australia. The men being sent there are self- starters, willing to build the program from the ground up. The second item is the number of applicants to the Benedictine Volunteer Corps this year40 in all! This is a signicant increase compared with last year. The caliber of the men who applied was high, which made for some very difcult decisions. There are a myriad of possibilities as to why the number of applicants skyrocketed, but only one is certain: The generosity of you, our donors. Continued support from our current donors, as well as the contributions of rst-time donors, ensures that Saint Johns University alumni will have the opportunity to serve the Church and the world, in the context of Benedictine community and prayer, for years to come. Lives are transformed, especially those of the Benedictine volunteers themselves. We thank you, the people who support us, both nancially and by keeping us in prayer. May God bless you as we have been blessed with the success of the Saint Johns Benedictine Volunteer Corps! Eric Pohlman Summer 2014 15 of monks who will be serving as consultants, assistants, and hosts. Also of note, at Morning Prayer on July 8, the abbey received two new novices into the community: Novice Bradford Rothrock and Novice Aidan Putnam. Brad is originally from Tucson, Arizona, and will soon complete his dissertation as a doctoral candidate in theology and education at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. Aidan is from Oakland, California, has managed a caf for the last few years and has been active as a minister of faith formation in his parish. Both Brad and Aidan completed their three-month Candidacy program in May. We look forward to their being part of the community. Congrats to Brad and Aidan! T he Saint Johns Alumni and Friends Cemetery is a ministry that serves alums, oblates, and friends who nd that their experiences at Saint Johns and of the Benedictine heritage keep them connected here. Many alums talk about the spiritual home that Saint Johns has been and continues to be: an anchor in busy and mobile lives. Visitors to the cemetery will experience a beautiful, peaceful place of natural beauty. In its quiet setting south of the main campus, the cemetery overlooks Lake Sagatagan to the east and, behind a border of trees, Watab Lake to the west. With its gently sloping hills and landscaping elements, it also attracts some amazing wildlife that includes deer, fox, bald eagles, and the loons calling at sunrise and sunset. It is a campus destination that can provide a prayerful setting and at the same time a reective place for remembering loved ones, friends, classmates, teachers and mentors. Historically, the cemetery has been in existence since the 1860s, and with the expansion of the alumni and friends addition in 2007, additional ground space along with granite cremation walls assure adequate cemetery space for years to come. This listing is of those who have given directly to the abbey. We are grateful for peoples generosity at any level and we thank them for their ongoing and much appreciated support. Members of these donor circles share in the abbeys ministry and service to the Church by assisting us with everything from educational ministry and voca- tion promotion to spiritual life and social outreach programs, as well as supporting our healthcare and retire- ment funds.
