winter wonderland!

A proposal to rezone two properties on Centre

Street has some residents fearing about safety on
the already overcrowded street.
The properties in question, 205 and 211 Centre Street, are currently zoned R1, single detached
dwelling.
The proposal would see them zoned as R2X,
medium density attached housing, which could
see fourplex units put on each property, or even a
six-plex on one of them.
Christie Meyers, who had submitted a letter to
council stating her concerns over the proposal,
and her husband Alvin plan to fight the proposed
rezoning every step of the way.
Meyers lives kitty-corner from the properties,
which are on the north corner of Centre Street
and Parkwood Crescent, where the three-way stop
sign is located.
Her fear about the safety of that street stems
from more than just a Not In My Backyard level
of reasoning; four years ago at that intersection, a
car hit her daughter Karlee, who is now 6.
We have concerns about a project of this size
being built in this neighbourhood when there are
already issues with traffic and parking, said Meyers.
We fought for the stop sign because the amount
of traffic on Centre Street, combined with a lack of
visibility due to the number of cars parked on the
street, made it a dangerous intersection. It still has
its risks, but a project that would increase traffic
and on-street parking wont help the situation.
Were concerned for the safety of our kids, and
this project wont make it any safer.
The parking issue is one that many residents
and councillors have about the street. The bylaw
states that there should be a minimum of 1.5 parking spots per dwelling.
If it is 1.5 that does speak to Christie Meyers
concern about having two car homes, where most
people do each own a vehicle when there is more
than one adult in a dwelling, and if theres a 1.5
then shes right, one will park in the driveway, one
will park in the street which weve already identified as a major problem, said Councillor Denise
Peterson at the Sept. 3 council meeting.
Council also heard some of the concerns from
Meyers and from Jason Binns, who lives on Parkwood Crescent. Binns also spoke about his traffic
safety concerns.

Cars, because of the lack of parking tend to park too close
to the corner, and you actually have to creep out almost into
the intersection before you can see, said Binns.
Safety is a concern as well and with more traffic and more
cars parked there and these people that fly through that, its
just an accident waiting to happen.
Werner Fischer, with the planning and development department for the town, said he thinks the best solution to
parking and access would be a private driveway that would
form the southerly extension of that lane.
My biggest nightmare would be along the lines of Mr.
Binns is saying, that suddenly theres more driveways, more
parking, more vehicles entering Centre Street from this new
development right at this corner, said Councillor Pat Fule.
Its fine and good to say that at the development part of
it that we would make sure things happen a certain way but
my worry is things dont go that way. Two councils before us
felt Centre Street was such a problem that they put a three
way stop right at that intersection, right where this development is supposed to occur, so thats my worry.
It is safe to assume that if the R2X zoning were approved
there could be potentially 10 to 20 new vehicles added to a
small area.
While our Municipal Development Plan supports an increase in density, I dont think it supports it at any cost. I am
very much in favour of increasing urban density, especially
in our downtown area, but I think that it has to be very, very
carefully plotted and I dont know that council can make an
informed decision when we dont know for sure whats going to be put on those lots, said Councillor Denise Peterson.
I think it would be very unwise in an area that has already
faced this much difficulty to make a decision without having
all of the information.
As of right now there are no long-term plans in place for
Centre Street. On the west side of the street many people
have driveways, but there are not as many on the east side,
which can add to the congestion.
I guess the key thing to me would be to ensure that lot
can handle the number of people that could happen there,
could be 20 vehicles, we dont know, it would be nice to
know what theyre building, said Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford.
Council all agreed that they would like to see more information brought forward in the form of a development permit
about what is exactly being proposed for the properties. The
public hearing was suspended until that time.

Council discusses school zone time changes

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Thanks to a fairly recent decision by the Alberta Government, municipalities can now determine the times for their
school and playground zones. A number of municipalities
have already made changes to their posted times, and it is
something Councillor Brad Walls would like to see happen
here.
I would like to suggest that we as well follow suit and
modify ours from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday to Friday on
school days. Obviously with kids coming and going and so
forth I think it would just be better for motorists if we just
said 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday school days 30km an
hour, said Walls.
I would encourage us to consider that all schools and
playgrounds become playground zones and they all be designated playground, and then there isnt a conflict in regards to times, whether or not the school is in, whether or
not the schools not, said Mayor Michael Ell.
Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford said he had

spoken to RCMP Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly for input, and said
that Reilly had suggested 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but had also
stated he would be open to other suggestions.
According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure website it states that; the Motor Vehicle Act establishes the maximum speed and time periods allowed in all
school zones. The current time limit, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
does not reflect todays more intensive use of school facilities.
The act has been amended which means providing safer
access for children and pedestrians. It recognizes the increased use of facilities located in school zones, and allows
for school speed zone hours to be extended where is warranted.
No zone can commence later than 8 a.m., or end sooner
than 5 p.m.
School zones in Strathmore are currently set at 30km with
posted hours of 8 a.m. - 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. - 1p.m., 3:30
p.m. to 4 p.m.
Administration was directed to bring back a recommendation to council.

Natural gas rates may see slight increase

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Director of Corporate Services Mel
Tiede brought forward a proposal from
ATCO to increase the natural gas franchise fee at the Sept. 3 town council
meeting.
The franchise fee is the rent that the
town receives from utility companies
for having infrastructure such as pipelines on Strathmore town land, said
Tiede.
Currently the town has an 11.18 per
cent natural gas franchise fee. Rates
in place by other municipalities range
from five per cent up to 35 per cent,
with 35 per cent being the maximum
allowable.
Theres only one community on
the list with no natural gas franchise
fee and that is the community of Nobleford, said Tiede.
He further explained that the average
of the listed fees is 16.62 per cent, with
the medium percentage at 15 per cent.
Based on an average of 120 gigajoules annual usage of natural gas by
the average residential user, residents
in Strathmore are paying $3.95 per
month or just under $48 annually for
the present franchise fee. Each one per
cent increase would cost the average
user .35 cents per month. Tiede recommended that council consider raising the fee to 16.62 per cent.
This would raise an additional
$127,000, approximately, in the 2015
budget year and assist in balancing the
budget well be looking at shortly. This
would cost the average residential user
an additional $1.90 per month to increase the franchise fee from 11.18 per
cent to 16.62 per cent, said Tiede.
The $1.90 would be in addition to the
$3.95 the average user is paying. Larger
homes would pay more and smaller
ones would pay a little less than that
dollar figure.

TIMES

$70 a year accumulates to be quite a bit

Councillor Brad Walls.
Councillor Pat Fule said while he
could see Walls point, council has
worked hard to keep taxes down the
past term.
The other side of that is we and the
previous council had worked really
hard to keep taxes, property taxes to as
best we can, and we have also tried to
put in a lot of amenities and improvements to help this town. I think weve
got a mindset in the town now that
people are willing to see slight increases if they know theyre getting something for their buck, said Fule.
He would like to see council direct

fair to be on par, and the fee does raise
income and revenue so the town can

is a small way to generate income.
We are facing some projects that do

Councillor Rocky Blokland said he

SHANNON LECLAIR

A bundle of energy and a can-do attitude were the first
things I noticed about Colton Sheppard. Then I noticed the
awesome Jake the Pirate pattern on his prosthetic leg. The
leg didnt appear to slowing the toddler down in the slightest.
Colton has Adams-Oliver syndrome. He has a heart condition, bilateral missing feet and a bald patch on his head. The
bald patch is in the middle of his head, where the soft spot
is. Most babies with that patch have an open cranium and
you can see right in. A skin graft is normally needed to close
it at birth. The Sheppards were lucky they didnt have to deal
with that in addition to the heart condition.
Colton had open heart surgery at 23 days old, and he
was a little fighter, he got RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)
while in hospital, so it wasnt just staying for his heart any-

more, it was staying for heart and lung issues. He

ended up coming home on oxygen because of his
lungs, said Chelsea Sheppard, Coltons mom.
When Sheppard was 28 weeks pregnant they
found out their son was missing his feet.
Its a dash of your hopes and your dreams and
you feel down on yourself, almost like what, happened to our future we thought we were going to
have. Its always s a lot worse when you find out
initially, said Sheppard.
I didnt believe them because I was like how
do you not see his feet on an ultrasound until
28 weeks. In hindsight, I look back on all the
ultrasounds that we had and it was perfectly visible the whole time, but if you didnt know what
youre looking for it looks like its just the edge of
the sonogram.
Thanks to the Alberta Childrens Hospital the
Sheppards were set up with the amputee clinic
fairly quickly after Coltons birth, and from there
were put in contact with the War Amps.
Recently the family took a trip to Winnipeg
to take part in the War Amps Child Amputee
(CHAMP) seminar.
The seminar brings together young amputees
from the western provinces (excluding BC which
has its own program) to learn more about themselves, and to teach families the skills needed
when dealing with people and their questions.
The theme this year was Set the Bar High and
learning to not let an amputation be a barrier to
living a full, active life.
CHAMPs has really given us the tools to accept, and not have guilt for it. I dont think there
was really much for guilt for us I had a normal
pregnancy, there was nothing that I could have
done different, it wasnt anything to do with what
I did during the pregnancy, said Sheppard.
I think the worst is people making assumptions, what happened during your pregnancy? or
what accident happened to him? did he have a
lawnmower cut them off? because there are those
(questions) too. Before people make assumptions
a lot of people, even just within CHAMP I know
for sure, we all prefer someone ask questions,
wed rather answer them, most of us, than have
someone judging.
CHAMP has taught them how to respond when
someone asks, whats wrong with him? The way
the question is asked, and the way the parents
respond can have an impact on the child as they
grow up.
Sheppard said you have to learn how to sit back
and say I dont see anything wrong with him, hes
perfect, would you like to know what happened
to his feet?
This was the second year straight that the family went to the seminar; normally a family is invited every three years, but they can also request
to attend additional seminars.
Last year we went and tried to focus on how
to handle judgmental people, stares and working
on how to explain it to people and how to let
people know about why hes the way he is, said
Sheppard.
The way CHAMP has helped them learn to handle some of the questions has been great, and its

been nice to have other families who know what

the Sheppards are going through.
Its nice to go to the CHAMP seminars
Colton has his friends that he hangs out with, he
has a couple that are all around the same age, and
they have different amputations but its kind of
cool to compare prosthetics, said Sheppard.
This year the reason we went back to CHAMPS,
my main reason, was because theyre (surgeons,
want to) to drill out Coltons growth plate in his
knee.
Coltons right foot, the one with the prosthetic,
doesnt allow for a bend in the ankle because
theres not enough room, he technically has his
ankle but cant use it. If he has the surgery and
the surgeons make that leg a little bit shorter, they
could put the ankle in for the prosthetic, which
would work by spring motion when he walks,
and could open up a number of options for him
later in life.
If a percentage of his plate is removed, though,
it reduces the growth of his leg by a certain per
cent each year, and over time that leg will get
shorter. There are both perks and potential downsides to it in Sheppards mind.
Because Sheppard and her family were able to
attend the seminar again this year, they were able
to look for another family who has been through
the procedure.
While she was unable to find one that has already had the procedure done, she did find a family whose daughter will be having it done when
she is 12. Coltons procedure wont be until he is
5 or 6, so Sheppard can now keep in contact with
the other family and see how things go for them.
Without the War Amps and the CHAMP seminar,
that connection might not have been made.
As Colton has grown, Sheppard and her husband have realized that they have a very stubborn and determined little boy on their hands
and some of their fears for him have already been
resolved.
We realized after he started walking this isnt
going to hold him back, we dont need to worry
about the fact that hes not going to be a hockey
player, hes not going to play soccer, we dont
need to worry about that, hes going to do it all,
hes going to take longer at learning to do it, but
hes very determined, said Sheppard.
Thats the thing we want to get across is if you
can accept him and give him time, hes going to
wow your heart and hes going to do the task
set in front of him. We havent raised him as a
disabled child; we havent raised him as different
from our first. He has more doctors appointments,
thats it, and they give him these cool, fancy feet
he gets to try out for a couple of months.
Colton can actually walk without his prosthetic
which is quite interesting. Our motto is, no feet,
no problem. He wont let anything hold him back
or stop him from doing what he does.
Seeing all the inspiring stories of amputees who
have gone on and realized their dreams has made
the Sheppards realize that there are so many
things Colton can, and will be able to, do especially with the right support, which they all have
thanks to War Amps.

House of Commons reconvenes

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

Throughout our Crowfoot riding, students have
returned to school by now and the harvesting
effort is at its peak. I was pleased to meet with
many constituents at various functions during the
summer and at our constituency office. I am happy to report the celebrations and parades that my
wife, Darlene, and I were privileged to be a part
of, were always well attended. It is encouraging to
see such high levels of participation at local events
in all corners of our large riding. It is important
for us all to take advantage of these ceremonies
and events in order to meet and continue building
strong relationships and strong communities.
As you may know, the House of Commons reconvenes on Sept. 15 and our Conservative caucus
will continue to work on your priorities. For example, we remain steadfast about our plan to continue to create jobs and economic growth. Hardworking taxpaying Canadians and their families
understand the importance of the performance of
the Canadian economy. This is why the Harper
Government will continue to work hard in Ottawa
to sustain our low-tax plan. You tell me, as you
always have, that you want to keep more of your
money where it belongs - in the pockets of Canadians and their families. Our Government agrees.
The proof is in the numbers: we have cut taxes 160 times saving the average Canadian family
nearly $3,400 this year; the number of Canadi-

ans living below the Low Income Cut-off is at its

lowest level ever; 1 million Canadians have been
removed from the tax rolls, including 380,000
seniors; 1.4 million Canadians are no longer living in poverty, including 250,000 children; after
tax disposable income has risen by 10 per cent
across all income levels since 2006; and, we have
increased the amount families in the two lowest
personal income tax brackets can earn before paying taxes. We have done all of this while staying
on track to balance the budget in 2015.
In our riding and throughout Alberta, we are
looking forward to the legislation promised by my
colleague, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and National Security to bring
common sense to firearms licensing. As well, we
will see the finalizing of the Canada-Europe Free
Trade Agreement, and we are making progress on
Bill C-36, the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act, as per the Supreme Court of
Canadas deadline for Canada to have new prostitution laws.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me
with your input on these and many other initiatives when Parliament reconvenes.

Field of nightmares
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
So last week, I wrote about my slo-pitch team and
how we made it to the Championship game of whatever division were in.
Its kind of weird, because we really dont know
what level the teams are, until we face them. Or, as in
our case, when we get crushed by them. Yes, sports
fans, our Cinderella team went to the ball, but the
ball was not kind to us! In fact, it was probably our
worst game, in a re-match against the best team wed
played this summer!
This was not a good combination, as the final score
was a tight one, where we were inched out by a score
of 24-2! It was also one of my personal worst games,
as I missed a couple of grounders, dropped a fly ball,
chased it, and then promptly fell on my butt into the
fence! We all had a lot of errors, and did not hit well
as a team.
One of the things that symbolized how badly things
went for me, was on my last at bat.
I hit a pretty good grounder, and sprinted for first
base. The throw came firing in, and with a thump,
landed in the opponents glove. She made the catch
and I was out. Its not that Im sexist and that a gal put
me out. It was that she made a great catch, put me out,
and all the while had a cigarette in her other hand! I
mean, she didnt even drop an ash off her smoke! It
was deflating, especially when she looked at me, took
a big puff, and said, nice try.
So, I crawled back to our bench while she calmly
finished her cigarette!
The second of major disasters happened when I
was playing first base. The opponent who had just hit
one to shallow center field, rounded the base to the
left, and when the throw came to me, he realized he
was caught! Oh, he was caught alright, if he had been
my age! I had to chase a 20-something guy back to

first base, and while chasing him, I realized there was

no way I was going to catch him! All I could do was
laugh, as he safely made it back!
Whoa, you guys, Im seeing spots, and I think I
smell burnt toast, I groaned. That got a few laughs but
absolutely no sympathy!
Even our pitcher Richard felt a little out of sorts.
He made a good pitch, striking out one of their gals.
Their guy on second base told Richard it was a great
pitch. Richard responded about that one pitch with,
even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while!
Well, we were blind squirrels that couldnt catch too
many nuts, and our batting was just about as bad!
It was the most lopsided game weve had all summer, and it felt like it would never end. Thats because
wed go out after three or four batters, then be out in
the field for six or seven runs. It was an absolute disaster! I couldnt wait for the end of this game. Someone
on our team said he wished it was doubleheader, but
I couldnt take the thought of another drubbing the
second one might even have been worse.
So, our field of dreams season has come to an end,
and we sadly slunk away! Next year, I plan to make a
comeback, and Im going to be ready.
I may even train a bit, work on my batting, and
above all, stretch! I have found muscles that hurt, that
I hadnt even remembered before! Look out slo-pitch
the Comeback Kid is trying again in 2015! Maybe
Ill join a second league of seniors! Then Id really be
the kid to the old guys and gals!
That way, Id really be able to make it to oatmeal
time at the lodge!

Town begins court proceedings

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Town of Strathmore has begun court proceedings following numerous unanswered requests of a local business to connect to the towns water supply. Councillor Brad Walls excused himself from the discussion to avoid a conflict of interest.
Five Pillar Holdings has not replied to these requests, said Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Linda Nelson at the Sept. 3 council meeting.
We are asking that council give notice to Hugh Ham to proceed in court with
action against the former Wheatland County Inn, now known as the Howard Johnson hotel.
This has been an issue thats been really a strong concern of mine. I have a great
deal of difficulty understanding how a business can operate and have untreated
water go to its customers and have them not knowing anything about it, said

People can drive in off the highway, look for a place to stay, go to the restaurant
or the lounge have ice in their drinks, have water in their glasses and they are not
even aware that untreated water is being served to them. I dont understand why
its had to go to this but this issue has really had me up in arms for a long time so
I wholeheartedly support this.
Council and administration have been directed not to comment further on the
matter.
This is not the first time the town and Five Pillar Holdings have butted heads.
Records can be found online indicating a dispute over the filing of a property and
tax assessment that began in 2008. In 2010 the matter was brought forward to the
Municipal Government Board for a decision. The board gave Five Pillar Holdings a
couple of options to continue on with their appeal.

Woods Homes basketball tourney returns

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The annual Woods Homes 3 on 3 basketball tournament is returning for a fifth year on Sept. 20.
Registration for the tournament will be open until Sept. 18, and any basketball players, competitive
or not are welcome to sign up. The only rule is that
players must be high school age or older.
Theres no skill requirements, just coming out,
having fun and playing some ball, said Carole Britton, manager of the Strathmore program.
The tournament started five years ago thanks to
Britton. At the time basketball was a huge part of
life for her and her family.
Its (also) a fundraising event to provide Christmas Hampers for families in Wheatland County.
This year there is no entry fee however, because
this year we made it our anniversary event.
Britton said they are asking for non-perishable
food items to be donated. The tournament will run
all day, and there will be semi-finals and finals, and
this year the winning team will walk away with
$500.
In the intermission we also have various com-

petitions, like a dunk competition, or three-point

shooting competition, said Britton.
Depending on the teams that register there will
be a fun league and a competitive one. This year
there are already three teams that have signed up
made up of some ex-college ball players, from Red

medalists, so Britton predicts it will be more competitive this year.
Woods Homes has been in Strathmore for 10
years, and the agency as a whole is celebrating 100
years this year.
Woods is a childrens mental health agency
working with youth ages six to 17. On average
20 families per year are helped in Strathmore and
Wheatland County. One of the homes opened in
Strathmore in 2004 and there are three house parent group homes in Strathmore. There is also inhome family support.
We were born in Strathmore to keep rural kids
connected to their community, I think thats our
biggest reason for being, said Britton.
Previous to Woods Homes coming into Strathmore the kids in the program would be sent to
Calgary or Red Deer, meaning they couldnt stay in

Finding me time at Curves

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Fall means a flurry of activity for families as they
prepare for school, sporting activities and prepping
the family home for the season ahead. This can
mean women forget to take time for themselves.
An online survey, conducted by Harris Polls for
Curves, indicated seven in every 10 women polled
responded that they would like more me time in
a given week. Surveys indicate women chose fitness and wellness activities, such as going to the
gym or exercising, as one of the top four ways to
spend me time.
Jana Koppe, owner of Strathmore Curves, said
the 30-minute strength-training circuit, combined
with exercise designed by celebrity exercise coach
Jillian Michaels, is a great fitness regime that has
gains beyond the physical.
When you take care of yourself, it goes back to
taking care of your family, said Koppe.
With the Curves Complete program, women also
have a fully integrated, personalized weight loss
and management solution, including customizable
meal plans with one-on-one coaching support. A
Curves Complete coach has completed a certification program developed in conjunction with the
Cleveland Clinic, one of the most respected hospitals in the USA. For more information on Curves

Complete programs, see www.curves.com. Koppe

and one of her senior trainers have taken the 40
hours of fitness and diet training, which gave them
the certification to help women train safely and efficiently to reach their goals.
The Strathmore Curves has members as young
as 13 and others in their 80s, so age need not limit
women from participating.
It is part of our philosophy to encourage women in all aspects of their lives, said Knoppe.
To that end, Curves is the ideal place to make
new friends and network too. There are two
unique micro-businesses that display their goods
in the Strathaven store; Tracey Cornett JK apparel
and Brenda Graff small Regal retail outlet are set
up within the store.
Curves of Strathmore, located at #5, 104 Strathaven Drive, will be hosting an open house the week
of Sept. 15-20. New members will get 30 days of
free exercise time. The week will also feature free
fitness for non-members at the 6:45 p.m. sessions
and a free draw for four months of free exercise
time. Koppe said the open house will be a good
time for anyone interested to test-drive the program.
She encourages women to stop by anytime and
talk with staff, to see if their me time could include Curves time towards a fuller and healthy
lifestyle.

Helicopter golf
ball drop winner
It was an exciting day for the community
around Speargrass Golf Course on Sept. 6.
Carseland Jet Setters, together with Speargrass Community Association, held a Helicopter Ball Drop with nearly 750 golf balls
being dropped from a helicopter hovering
over the golf hole. While none fell into the
hole Garth Hartigh from Sylvan lake didnt
mind as his ball was closest to the hole and
he was happy with the big win of $2,000.
Residents in the community enjoyed helicopter rides, a fall barbeque and mini golf
with holes set up by the residents. Fun was
had by all.

Request for stampede expenses

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

At the Sept. 3 council meeting Councillor Rocky Blokland requested an expense report on the use of the booth at
the Strathmore Stampede. He made it
clear he was not questioning who was
in the box or why, he just wanted full
financial disclosure of the expenses of
operating the box.
It has been brought to my attention this year, and the last two years,
by various citizens in the town concerning the cost of operating the Town
of Strathmore Heritage Days box in
the grandstand. I can answer some of
these questions, but I cant answer all
of them, said Blokland.
He asked for a full cost disclosure
to be brought forward, outlining the
food and beverage expenses, the box
rental, wages and any other expense
related to operating it. He also wanted
to know how many years the town has

had the booth at the rodeo. Once he

has that info Blokland said he plans to
address the matter further at a future
council meeting.
Councillor Brad Walls excused himself from the discussion to avoid conflict of interest.
MUSEUM GETS A NAME
The museum committee has officially
determined the name of the museum,
said Mayor Michael Ell at the Sept. 3
council meeting. The official name will
be the Western District Historical Society.
The society has submitted their application for society status. Once society status is obtained they will be able
to move forward with further planning.
In the meantime donations to the society are tax deductable, and can be
made through Wheatland County.
Ell said citizens are expressing interest in the society, and he feels there are
many positive indications the museum
will be successful.

Swim therapy
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

If you have an injury or have a person with special needs, come try a
therapeutic session at the Strathmore
Aquatic Centre.
The sessions allow for people to
come and have a quiet hour to rehab
in a comfortable environment. For the
special needs person, it is a time where
they can stay active with supervision.
It is available for anyone with special needs or rehab surgery but not a
sprained ankle or any small things like
that, said Brenda Condon, assistant

manager of the pool. What we have

done because the numbers have been
low for it, is combined it with a senior
adult swim so there are more people in
the pool.
The program does not have swimming instructors but its a session for
quiet time or relaxation.
Its just a time where people can
come in and it is a quieter time, said
Condon. They dont have to worry
about people maybe knocking them
over or splashing them and they can
get that time they need to work those
muscles that need to be worked.

The newly drawn Medicine Hat riding

Conservative Electoral District Association President Stirling Fox announced

What can I pack for my kids lunch?

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

What can I give to my child for lunch? Sandwiches are
boring. What else can I pack for them?
Greta Kubis, registered dietitian with Strathmore Health
Unit, hears those questions often.
Parents want their
kids to eat healthy,
to have good nutrition, and to have
enough energy for
the rest of the day,
Kubis says. Lunches
should have all four
food groups.
She suggests we
plan lunch around
meat or another protein like fish, eggs,
nuts, or beans.
Kids are growing, she says. They
need protein. They
need iron. They
need fat.
A good lunch also includes a grain, and a milk or milk
alternative like cheese or yogurt.
A good lunch includes fruit and vegetables, and its challenging to get children to eat enough vegetables. Lunch can
include carrot sticks, snap peas, cherry tomatoes or corn.
Lettuce or a tomato can be put in a sandwich. A pasta salad
or bean salad can include vegetables, and chopped red or
green peppers or onions can be added to egg salad. Cucumbers or pickles are good, too.
Whatever (vegetables) kids like, Kubis says, its good to
try to give them more vegetables as a part of lunch.
Choosing drinks is important, too.
Two drinks are good for kids. Number one is milk. Number two is water, she says.
100 per cent fruit juice (not cocktail or punch) is fine,
but not more than half a cup (the equivalent of a juice box)

per day. Children shouldnt drink energy drinks or sports

drinks like Gatorade, because they contain a lot of sugar,
and the caffeine in energy drinks is unhealthy for children.
She suggests parents limit chocolate milk and vanilla-flavoured milk to special occasions, since they also contain a
lot of sugar.
But how do busy parents find time to prepare healthy,
appealing lunches
for our children?
Kubis says planning
is the key. If parents
take half an hour on
weekends to plan
what children eat
Monday to Friday,
and then grocery
shop
accordingly,
choosing food from
all four food groups,
we can save time
during the week,
much more time,
she says.
She
suggests
packing lunches the
evening before, and
involve children in the process.
Talk to kids about what they will eat, she says, so kids
know what they will eat the next day.
Enlist their help, and theyll soon do it on their own.
Theres another benefit.
They usually eat much better and they will not bring
food home (uneaten) if they are involved in preparation of
lunches, Kubis says.
Victoria Stowe, dietetic intern, adds, a parent can be a
good role model (by taking) lunches to work themselves.
Thats a real good way to show (children) that its something good to do, and it will also save them a little bit of
money.
A healthy lunch is not enough, of course.
Kids should not leave home without eating breakfast,
Kubis says. If they do not eat breakfast, they are hungry.
They cannot concentrate in school. They cannot learn properly. If they eat, they have energy. They have material for
growth. They are calm ... they can learn much faster than if
they are hungry.
Parents can stop at Tim Hortons for breakfast ... but kids
do not have this opportunity.
To encourage children to get up for breakfast, she suggests we talk about it the night before. Cereal and milk,
toast with an egg, bread with ham, or a bagel with cream
cheese are all good starts. Its ideal for children to have milk
in the morning, she says. Hungry children and teens can fill
their stomachs with fruit.
It is not difficult to eat healthy if parents really plan and
think and want to know how, Kubis says. If parents teach,
from early childhood, eating properly and healthfully together, then for kids it becomes normal to eat regular meals
and to eat healthy food.

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Glitch Busters is open and ready to assist you with all of
your computer needs. Kyle Larson, owner of the shop, has
finished renovating the shop, which is located next to Joyland Theatre, and officially opened the doors to the public
on Sept. 9.
Larson provides a one-stop shop for all your computer
needs, including repairs, and selling new models.
Were going to be doing reconditioned computers, brand
new computers, sales and service, trade-ins, so someone can
bring their old computer in and trade it in towards a new
one, or a better one, said Larson.
Theres only one other store in town, and I live in Drumheller and theres four stores there and they all seem to be
able to make a go of it, so I figured Strathmores almost twice
the population.
Larson has been working on repairing computers for over
seven years, focusing more on the PC side than Mac, but he
will work on both systems. He sells both refurbished com-

available for sale are ASUS and Lenovo models.
He will offer screen repair services, but wont offer it for
iPhones or iPads - it will be a service available only for computer screens.

War Amps provide assistance

to local CHAMP
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Recently Chelsea and Jason Sheppard
and their 19-month-old son Colton attended the War Amps CHAMP seminar
in Winnipeg.
Colton was born missing part of both
feet. Thanks to the War Amps and the
Alberta Aids to Daily Living the Sheppards will not have to worry about providing prosthetic feet for their son.
So far their benefits have covered
most of the costs, and they havent had
to rely too heavily on either War Amps
or AADL, but knowing that no matter
what that support is there is a huge relief to the couple.
War Amps provides CHAMP families with financial assistance for artificial limbs, including the cost of recreational limbs so that the kids can stay
active and keep up with their peers.
A recreational limb, like a waterproof
swim leg, for example, allows a child
to swim, but also provides safety when
walking on the beach or wet surfaces
like the shower.
The financial assistance is very important as children outgrow their limbs
like they do their clothes. CHAMP seminars provide a forum to share concerns
and advice and learn about the latest
developments in artificial limbs. The
Matching Mothers Program matches

new CHAMP families with experienced

ones for ongoing advice and support,
said Carol Johnson with the War Amps.
Because the child may be the only
amputee in their school or community,
CHAMP seminars provide the families
with a unique opportunity for the parents to meet others who may be going
through the same thing, and for the
children to meet fellow amputees and
know that they are not alone.
They learn about the latest developments in artificial limbs, and take part
in a show and tell session where they
gain confidence showing and talking
about their amputation and artificial
limb/ devices, said Johnson.
The What Bugs Me session allows
Champs to talk in an open-forum session about issues like teasing, staring
and questions, and they receive advice
from older Champs on how to handle
these situations. Parents learn about
raising an amputee child and have the
opportunity to meet and talk to experienced parents as they go through the
various stages of their childs growth.
What CHAMPs has done for my husband is give him other dads who struggle with a lot of the same things, said
Sheppard.
He has issues with the staring, and
despite all of the work with CHAMP
that will never go away. Summer time
can be harder because Coltons not

The swimming pool and the water
park are two of the worst places for
Sheppard, because a lot of people dont
go up and ask what happened, they just
stare and assume. Sheppard said, she
wants to share her story, and she feels
that by sharing it will become more of
a socially accepted thing.
She and her husband fear the day
Colton goes to school and a teacher
asks him to sit out because they dont
think he can participate. They want everyone to know he can do it, and will
in his own way, it just may take some
time.
There are thousands of Canadian
children who benefit from CHAMP,
with approximately 100 new children
being enrolled annually.
The War Amps does not receive government grants. CHAMP and all of The
War Amps programs for Canadian amputees are funded by the publics support of the Key Tag and Address Label
Service, said Johnson.
Supporters of the Key Tag Service
receive peace of mind in having their
keys protected through a confidentially
coded number, while at the same time
supporting these vital programs for amputees.

Creating the leaders

of tomorrow
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Having the opportunity to become a
leader in your workplace is something
that can be both terrifying and gratifying. Its also a way to really learn about
you and your skills, strengths and
weaknesses.
At Chinook Credit Union upper management knows that finding the leaders of today will help the business and
clients of tomorrow, and thats part
of why they have the Chinook Young
Leaders (CYL) program available to
their staff.
Chinook and the Credit Union system really recognize there is a need to
keep young leaders in all of our organizations involved in order to be successful, said Keith Richard, vice president of credit for the Credit Union.
The demographics are changing
and its important to take individuals
like those (in CYL, to get) involved in
our organizations and involve them
from the ground floor including being
part of the strategic planning, the business planning to help our organization
be successful.
The idea and mission behind CYL is
to foster the growth of young leaders
within the organization by focusing on
personal development, leadership skill
development and mentorship while
upholding the values and strategic direction of the credit union.
The group is made up of six individuals all under the age of 35. To be
eligible applicants must be a Chinook
Credit Union staff member, they must
strive to be in a management or leadership role, and must pass the interview
and application stage, of course. Successful applicants are then welcome to
a three-year term on the CYL team.
We provide them as an executive
direction, directly out of our business
plan. So we take some of the goals and
items that we want to accomplish in a
year and we assign it to this group. It
takes them out of their everyday position and allows them to contribute to
the success of our organization even
more, said Richard.
Being a member provides an opportunity to give them additional training,
education and professional development and it allows them to experience
more of the business. The team also
gets to learn more about strategic planning and development projects and
CYL gets a voice at the board table.
They are really contributing to our
success, said Richard.
One of this years projects is to create a formal mentorship program, taking mentees and mentors and assigning them based on the needs of the
individual to provide the mentee with
direction and help them with their professional development wherever they
have a need.
Another initiative is the lollipop moment. The lollipop moment is a way
for people to recognize others in the
organization who have the everyday
leadership, life-changing skills the
Credit Union is proud of.
The real driver behind that is recognizing everyday leadership which
again were trying to get away from
the fact that its just a title. Its everything, its how we treat each other, its
the influence we have and recognizing
that you do have the ability to make

change, said Allison Phillips-Stringer,

people solutions analyst and CYL chair.
Phillips-Stringer is in her final term
with CYL, and couldnt express her appreciation enough for the program and
for the opportunity to be a part of it.
Trish Romanchuk, manager of marketing and CYL co-chair, said she
thinks it exhibits something neat about
the Chinook Credit Union culture that
they are using CYL to develop the
leaders of tomorrow that are emerging now, and are also developing their
leaders that are going to be the mentors.
We actually see this as an opportunity to be a learning point and a growing point for them as well, said Romanchuk.
Our leadership has such an impact,
everything from the attitude on the
front line, to their supervisors a couple
levels up that are influencing them. If
theyre not doing their part it comes
down and it completely has an effect
on those people that are facing our
members, said Phillips-Stringer.
It really allows them to understand
what our business is doing and how
we can improve it and we position
them to do that, where they have every opportunity to come back to the
leadership table and make suggestions
that will make us better, said Richard.
The opportunity to be a part of
CYL has presented the team with the
chance to be creative, and implement
things that will last past their term on
the team.
For example, the Mantra Monthly
newsletter which was created, connects everyone with whats happening,
and allows each level of staff insight
into the CYL and into the Credit Union
as a whole.
Each member of the CYL team is inspired to do something better in the
organization, which is part of why they
do it. Theres the business side, but it is
also all about having fun.
The more you have a desire to come
to work and be part of a group like
this, the longer youre going to stay,
said Richard.

Senior Spartans football drop opener

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Strathmore Spartans high school
football team was hoping for a different result in their opener against Medicine Hat High School, but ended up on
the wrong end of a 62-10 defeat.
First-year coach Chuck Holloway
admitted that execution was an issue
needs to be worked on.
We had a lot of missed assignments,

not finishing our blocks and not executing, said Holloway.

Even though the season just started,
the team is looking for more communication on the field.
We need more gelling and execution because we had blown a lot of assignments, said Holloway.
Despite the loss, there were some
bright spots to take away from the
game.
When we did execute with plays we

took them off guard once we gained 20

yards here and there (but) then we had
false starts, offsides and shot ourselves
in the foot, said Holloway.
It is difficult for players to stay focused in games that are not close in
points but coach Holloway was able
to keep them motivated by encouraging them with a recruiter being in the
crowd.
I actually called a timeout because
we actually had a recruiter from Con-

cordia and I told them before half that

the guy was there to give them extra
motivation, said Holloway.
The seniors will re-group for next
week. The team consists of a lot of
Grade 10s and they play pretty well
but need to work hard against the bigger teams that have older players.
The senior Spartans will be back in
action on Sept. 13 when they host McCoy at Strathmore High School at 2:30
p.m.

The UFA Bisons are hosting their annual exhibition tournament

Peewee Spartans victorious

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Community Football Association (SCFA) peewee Spartans beat the Red Deer
Steelers 38-18 in exhibition play on Sept. 6.
Head Coach Clinton
Bean was happy to see
his team gel from the beginning to the end in the
game.
Tanner Bean, who had
two rushing touchdowns
and two receiving touchdowns for a total of 170
yards, led the team offensively.
The offense was excellent from start to finish. In the passing game
(they) went four for five
for two touchdowns and
rushing the ball for almost 280 yards and four

touchdowns, said Bean.

The offense also controlled the play and was
able to sustain drives and
keep their defense on the
field.
Defensively, the line
was able to shake off a
rough start after surrendering two touchdowns
on Red Deers first two
possessions.
After defensive coach
Travis Ericksteen made
some adjustments and got
their feet
under them they only
allowed one more touchdown the rest of the
game, said Bean.
The offensive and defensive line played exceptional on their positioning
to preserve the win. Doug
Thiessen coached the offensive and defensive
lines, resulting in monster

games.
The offensive line allowed time for the quarterback to sit back and
throw the ball while
the defensive line made
some critical third down
stops, said Bean. Special teams, coached by
Rob McLaughlin, had a
well rounded day, capped
off by a beautiful 45 yard
punt by Daniel Mulder
that the other team was
not expecting.
The peewees defied all
odds in the first game as
the team showed that they
were capable of playing at
a high level. Bean admits
they set some high goals
and have a long way to go
before they are reached.
Their next game is Sept.
13 when they travel to
Cochrane for the season
opener.

Lady Spartans
prepare for new year
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore High School senior
girls volleyball team held their Early
Bird tournament on Sept. 6.
The team has younger and smaller
players compared to previous years.
Coach Randy Moncks knows his team
will need a collective group effort if
they are to defeat some of the bigger
teams in tournament play this season.
Weve had some girls that played
club volleyball so were already started
at a level thats fairly competitive from
Day 1 without too many practices under our belt, said Moncks.
He admits after this early season
tournament there is a lot of work to do.
Weve got a lot of work to do because a lot of these kids havent played
any club volleyball, said Moncks.
Were at a grass roots level and we
have some real strong athletes who
have been multiple sport ones that can
do a variety of skills.
The team has many new faces that
are new to the game and need to get
their reps in and get familiarized with
their teammates if they are going to
compete with the bigger sized teams.
These kids need to touch a lot of
volleyballs and for us to be competitive our defensive skills have to be way
better, said Moncks. Were not a big
team at all, you can see that Chestermere and Rundle, all those kids are six
feet and make a big difference.
Moncks has some concerns about
having this Early Bird tournament because of some players that chose to
wait until senior year to play volleyball.

I was a little hesitant about this

tournament because its so early. We
have so many raw kids in Grade 11
that have never played at all in junior
high and didnt play Junior Varsity last
year and all of sudden they show up
and have some height, said Moncks.
The adjustments are not all a workin-progress, having a combination of
new team members and skill sets is a
positive step in the right direction.
That part is positive in the fact that
we are all sort of at the same level, we
have no stars but together I think as a
group theyre going to have to decide
together that were going to be competitive and work hard, said Moncks.
The day-long tournament gave the
Lady Spartans a chance to see how
they size up against the competition.
The one positive thing about playing this early is these girls who havent
been in the volleyball world so much,
they see girls on the other side that
are already at a level of skill that these
guys are not at, said Moncks. Hopefully they realize how hard they have
to work to a level that is competitive at
this point.
While this may be a rebuilding season, it is important for the team and
school to make the trip to zones.
This program has always been in
the playoffs no matter if its in our
league or into the zone group. We have
always been a threat to be in the round
of upsets, said Moncks.
The senior girls team has opted out
of league play this year. They will be
only playing tournaments for the duration of the season. The first one is Sept.
12-13 at the University of Calgary.

The Strathmore High School Senior girls volleyball

team hosted their Early Bird tournament at SHS
on Sept.6.

Rookie ringette
The Strathmore Ringette Association with the help of

Drop-in volleyball
begins
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The drop-in volleyball league wants
players to come out and have fun playing the sport on Wednesday nights from
7 p.m. to 9 p.m. starting Sept. 17 at
Crowther Memorial Junior High School.
We are looking at those who are out
of school, basically 18 or 19 and up,
said Lavern Lein, organizer of drop-in
volleyball.
The league is looking for players who
have some knowledge of the game and
can play it competitively.
I would say it is competitive and the
skill level has to be fairly good and you

have to have played, said Lein. The

good thing about drop-in is that you
can drop in one week and (the next)
say youre busy with your kids doing
other stuff, so its not a formal league.
You can drop in (any week) and we
pick teams.
You can develop your own skills and
youre playing at a fairly good level and
so youre skills end up improving as
well.
The season begins Sept. 17 and the
cost is $20 for the season and $2 per
drop-in.
If you have any questions, you can

Bisons eye bigger,

stronger team
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons hockey club was a
smaller but skilled team last year and
has upgraded this year by bringing in
size and speed.
Coach Dan MacDonald wanted to
have a combination of both to be more
physical with the opposition this season.
We were a small team physically last
year and that is one thing we looked
for is guys who can still skate fast but
have a larger body. So thats one area
that we think that were bigger at, especially our defense, said MacDonald.
The players that have tried out are bigger than the players we had last year so
were going to be a little bigger team.
MacDonald wanted more size because the skill was there but it was difficult to have more net presence. The
bigger bodies on this years team will
give them a more of an advantage in
the crease area.
MacDonald and his assistants have
been impressed so far by what they
have seen and are looking forward to
how the team will match up in exhibition play this coming weekend.
Were down to 30 players, we started
with 100. Well take these guys into the
five exhibition games this weekend,
said MacDonald. Then after that well
get it down again to about 22 or maybe
24. Itll depend how even the players
are.
Since training camp started last week,

the players have not made the decisions

for MacDonald and his staff easy ones.
Its been tough since the beginning
because the players are trying very
hard. Hopefully were taking enough
time to pick the right guys who want
to be good throughout the year not just
for a short time, said MacDonald.
The Bisons goal this year is to get past
that second round where they were
eliminated in the recent post-season.
We certainly want to get by the second round. If youre a competitive person the first thing you say is okay were
going to beat that, said MacDonald.
The players that have been in camp
have responded really well to what the
coaches have asked of them as a lot
of them have displayed a strong work
ethic.
Theyre a keen bunch of guys and
showing that on the ice and theyre
showing it off the ice, said MacDonald.
The guys we have contact with,
we know that theyre going to be solid players because they have a good
strong work ethic.
In the Black and White game on Sept.
7, the contest was an exciting affair and
Team Black was able to come out with
a 3-1 win.
The Bisons are in exhibition action
this weekend starting Sept. 11 vs. Red
Deer, Sept. 12 vs. the Calgary Northstars and Sept. 13 vs. the Calgary Buffaloes with all games being played at
the Strathmore Family Centre. The first
home regular season game is on Sept.
26 vs. the Calgary Northstars at 8 p.m.

Apex MMA owner/

trainer Justin Schmit
wants to teach youth
about the fundamentals of mixed martial
arts and how the
sport can increase
ones self confidence
when encountering
a situation such as
bullying.

From rink to ring

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

When Justin Schmit retired as a professional hockey player, he could not
decide what he wanted to do until
he chose to open Apex Mixed Martial
Arts (MMA) gym in Strathmore this past
summer.
The transition from the rink to the
ring was a seamless one as he missed
the competiveness of sports.
When I retired from playing professional hockey I missed competing so
much and MMA was becoming more of
a mainstream sport and gyms started to
pop up. I boxed for a long time and
did various martial arts, said Schmit.
I immediately wanted to compete and
started training. That was in 2007 and I
started fighting professionally in 2012
and havent looked back.
The intention of Apex MMA is to have
everyone that is interested participate,
but doing so in a comfortable environment where everyone can come.
Its a super family friendly environment, said Schmit. Kids can take a
class and parents can be on the other
side working out or doing a boot camp.
As an instructor he always wants to
teach the students the basics and make
sure they do the MMA techniques properly, and he also wants to help the individual build self-confidence.
Everybody comes here with different goals in mind. As far as the little
kids go, I really like to increase their

Justin Seward Photo

confidence, said Schmit. We really like

to promote anti-bullying here and we
want them to stand up for themselves
and others. That does not necessarily mean you have to get in a physical
conflict with them, I just like promoting
self-confidence.
Whether someone is young or a
grown-up, Schmidt teaches the classes
no differently to one group over the
other.
The things I teach the kids a lot of
the times I like to teach the grown-ups
and its good for myself and other guys
who have a little more experience (is)
to go back to the basics because a lot
of things you overlook, said Schmit.
When you are forced to teach them to
somebody you are learning a lot of stuff
as well.
The gym has gained positive vibes
around town.
Its been awesome, we kind of expected a slow summer. We have a strong
nucleus of members and clients and its
like a big family here, said Schmit.
Apex MMA has a variety of instructors
with experience and they are willing to
help out people that are new the sport.
Programs offered are: MMA, boxing,
jiu jitsu, muay thai, military boot camps
and kids summer camps. They are offered throughout the week, and more
information can be found at www.
apex-mma.com or by calling 403-9349958.
Schmits next MMA fight will be on
Oct. 3 at COP in Calgary.
