Standards:
To engage students in exploring real world issues and solving authentic problems using
digital tools and resources for mathematics.

Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to create an excel spreadsheet which will list off two sets of data
from a given sample. Students will then be able to calculate the average and the median
of the data using excel. Students will then be able to create a line chart in excel to receive
a visual of the differences between the results of the data, the average and the median.

Introduce the learning activity:
1. To introduce students to the lesson objectives I will explain to them how excel is
a spreadsheet application that can be used to help with everyday mathematical
equations. Students will learn how to input numbers to calculate the average and
the median. Once that is calculated students will then learn how to create a line
graph to compare their data and receive a visual.
2. Students will be motivated to participate in this lesson because they will be using
technology that will help them to do everyday task. This lesson will helps students
in the future and also with activities they may find interesting. For example,
students can input data from sports teams that they like to compare how well one
team is doing as opposed to another.

Provide Information:
I will begin by asking the class if they know what it means to find the average and the
median of a set of values. After hearing the definitions that the students may or may not
provide I will put the definitions on the board for them to see and then provide an
example.

Average: when you add all the numbers, and then divide by how many numbers there are.
Example: Find the average between 7,8,12,15,23
Add the numbers: 7+8+12+15+23=65
Divide by how many numbers: 65/5= 13

Median: the middle number in a set of numbers in valued order.
Example: Find the median value of the set {22,3,16,14,7,18,12}
Put them in order {3,7,12,14,16,18,22}
The middle number is 14, so the median is 14

Example to be done with the class: There are 8 students in Mrs. Smiths class. They have
had two tests this year. The grades received for the two tests are listed in the chart below.

Students Test 1 Test 2
Amy 88 72
John 76 54
Tom 90 79
Sarah 98 81
Billy 82 84
Hannah 87 66
Josh 79 67
Beth 91 76

Use excel to calculate the average and the median for test 1 and test 2. Then create line
graph to shows the test scores and the average and the median.

Step 1: Insert the student tab and students name into column A
Step 2: Insert the test 1 tab and results into column B
Step 3: Insert the test 2 tab and results into column C.
Step 4: Go back to column A and under the last students name label the box Average and
under the average tab label the box Median
Step 5: Go to column B and under the last test score and next to the word average you
will then calculate the average. You will do this by entering =average(b1-b9) then hit
enter. This will then calculate the average for you. You will then do the same for column
C. You will enter =average(c1-c9) enter.
Step 6: Go to column B and under the calculated average you will calculate the median.
You will do this by entering =median(b1-b9) then hit enter. Then it will calculate the
median for you. You will then do this for column C. You will enter =median(c1-c9)
Note: It is important that you have the equal sign before the equation or else this will not
work.
Step 7: Once all your data is input and calculated you will then highlight all the columns
and rows that you put information into. You will then go to the top of the spreadsheet and
click on the chart tab. You will then select the line option and then you will select line
again. This will create a chart where you will see the differences between test 1 and test 2
scores as well as the differences between the average and the medians for test 1 and test
2.

I will then ask students if they have any question before I give them an example to do on
their own.

Provide Practice:
Students will then be given an example in which they will have to work independently to
solve the problem. Question may be asked while working on the problem.

Example for students to work on independently: At Johns Birthday party he served apples
and lollipops. John asked his friends how many apples and lollipops that have had while
at his party. Johns friend Amy had 5 apples and 1 lollipop, Mark had 2 apples and 6
lollipops, Sean had 10 apples and 0 lollipops, Sara had 2 apples and 2 lollipops and Lilly
had 1 apple and 8 lollipops. Using excel find the average and median amount of apples
and lollipops that had been eaten at Johns party. Also create a line graph to show the
difference between the numbers of apples eaten compared to the number of lollipops
eaten.

Students will be given time to work on the problem and ask any questions they may have.
Once students have calculated the answers on their own I will allow them to ask the
people around them to share their results with each other to see if they have the correct
answer. I will allow the students to ask me questions. Once all questions were asked and
they have compared their answers I will put the problem on the board for students to
check their answers. I will then ask if all students calculated the right answer and will
review the steps with the students again to make sure they fully understand the task.

Provide Knowledge of Results:
To assure students that they are doing a good job I will tell them that they all took very
well the lesson. Make sure they know that their effort and hard work was appreciated.
Then I will instruct the students to a certain area of the task where I think they could use
the extra help. I will assign them a problem to do and have then look carefully at the
areas where I saw students struggling. I will tell them they did a good job on the task and
to be ready to ask more questions in the next class.
I will provide written feedback on the task by asking the students to email me the work
they have done in class and at home and I will then print out there work and provide
comments and correct mistakes that may have been made on the assignment.

Review the activity:
Before the class ends I will ask all students to take out a sheet of paper and write down
their version of the steps that it took at achieve the answers that they needed. By doing
this it will assure me that the students know what they are doing. I will be able to see
where the students are struggling and I can help them with it in the next class. This is a
way to have kids memorizes the steps they need to take in order achieve their answer and
it will provide me with feedback on how affectively I taught the lesson and how I can
better then lesson for the next time I teach it.

Method of Assessment:
Once the students have learned the lesson they will then be tested on their knowledge. I
will give them a test with a few different examples to make sure they fully grasped the
concepts. They will then be graded on their work to see whether or not the students
learned the task that was presented to them.

Sample Test:

Part 1: Calculate the average and the median of the examples below without using any
hardware or software.

1. Find the average for this list of values: 2,6,9,14,17,19,22,27,29,35

2. Amy test scores for her English class this year were an 85, 92, 97, 100, and 73. What is
Amys test score average?

3. Find the median value of the given set: {91,88,76,55,84,74,100,107,65}

4.Find the median value of the given set: {5,9,2,4,1,0,-1,10,14,5}

Part 2: Use excel spreadsheets for this section.

1.Fourteen men and women were asked to participate in a survey where they were asked
how many pairs of shoes they owned. The chart below shows the results of the survey.
Use this information to find the average and the median number of shoes that men and
women have.

3. Tom asked 5 of his friends how many pets they had. He asked how many dogs, Cats,
birds and fish they each had. Toms friend Renee has 2 dogs, 1 cats, 0 fish and 1 bird, Sam
has 0 dogs, 6 cats, 2, fish and 0 birds, Sally has 5 dogs, 1 cat, 10 fish, and 3 birds, Jack
has 1 dog, 2 cats, 5 fish and 0 birds and Jared has 10 dogs, 3 cats, 2 fish, and 3 birds. Use
this information to create find the average and the median of number of dogs, cats, fish
and birds Toms friends have. Then create a line graph to demonstrate this information.
