The Sustainable Industrial Integrated Organic
Aquaculture (SIIOA) Tilapia farming model
presently under development for Pacific LTD
in Malawi will be capable of producing 1600
tonnes of tilapia per annum. The approach is
integrated, intensive, industrial and organic
where the wastes generated from the fish
farming component are utilized in the
production of a valuable aquatic fodder, as
the primary feed ingredient for the fish.
The methodology meets the most stringent
organic aquaculture standards being
extremely environmentally sustainable due to
the fact the no effluents or by-products are
The schematic above illustrates the integrated and environmentally friendly production system to
be employed in the production of 1600 tonnes of Tilapia by Pacific LTD in Malawi.
The two sub-farming systems depicted above embraces a bio-resource use efficient farming
methodology, having few imports and few, if any, off-farm inputs including raw materials, energy,
and nutrients etc.
discharged into the surrounding environment. Well proven tank based culture technology intended
for use offers excellent control over husbandry and production cycles enabling the year-round
production of 350g Tilapia of exportable A-grade quality. Effluents discharged from the tank systems
rather than being directed to the surrounding environment will be used as both a nutrient and water
source in the production of a high-value high-protein aquatic plant crop called Lemna minor.
