Ubo Is the tribe in the western part of Lake Sebu, Our
Ancestor was Datu Kemokul, Datu Semgulang, Datu Ubo,
and Datu Buyan. Ubo Tribe is known since time
immemorial, but it does not expose and known by the
Christians because of the smaller scope of the area
where we live.
The Source of Living of the ubo is farming. Kaingin is
the best practice which we call in ubo term as
Tniba/Flusok. which we use to plant palay and root
crops as source of our food consumption. Ubo has the
specific date and month of planting. The best season for
planting when its full moon or in our term Tngol
because this will produce abundant harvest. In doing
Tniba/Flusok this will Bayanihan system. When the plant
is ready to harvest the owner will again call all the people
involve and help during kaingin to come for a
thanksgiving of the abundant harvest Lemtus is the
term in ubo. The activity they made is they cook all the
first harvest and serve it to all the people who come in

the activity, after the lemtus made thats the time to
continue harvesting. In harvesting all the people who
harvest will bring their harvest to their home the owner
give them all their harvest which we call nuta.
Ubo other source of food is from the forest Example;
Biking, Bok, Tbongon and many more. Other root crops
that the ubo plant is; Ubikoyu, Ubi, Kowol and many
more as their food before the harvest time come.
Blatik, Folot, Tebed, Iluy, Dilan, Tkob and many
more traps is used by ubo to catch, Sdo, Uhu, Unge,
Bolos Fofet, Tengalung and other wild animals which
they use as viand, They also have trap they made when
they want fishes; which we call; Bu, Tokof, Dule, Komti
and other trap that can catch fish.
Other practice of ubo is MODUNG, this is usually
exercise and exist until now when there is died. The
relative will make a lungun Benwaya in ubo term of
coffin. And they put ditok Damay, and Kohu and even
Ubikoyu nasa in ubo term so that the odor of the dead
will not be coming out.

Ubo tribe resolves conflict through the Datu. Datu is
the automatic leader of the tribe, in every clan and
village there is an identified datu who will defend their
clans when there is conflict.
In getting marriage; tribe to tribe the dowry will be
10 horses and 2 carabao if the women is the daughter of
Datu, 4 horses and 1 carabao for the civilian. The same
thru the Christian its up to the datu decision. Before
getting married there must first Sefni Tising as sign that
there will be getting married, and after that they will set
date and day for MULU means the parents of the
married woman will prepare food for the parents of the
boy who getting married. That time the Parents of the
Boy will bring the entire demand dowry and give it to the
parents of the women. Its the Datu also presides the
marriage.
In murder cases; there are 2 options that the datu
decided whether to give fines or putting to dead the
murdered person. If the criminal cannot afford to give
fines, if there will no datu who wants to save him, he will

be killed. and the killing will be in the public place, and
they put him on the post in ubo term FNIHOL wherein
all the member/clans of the victims, Men, women or
even children will have to help killed the criminal.
But in the event that, the datu will save the criminal
because he did afford to pay his fines, the criminal will be
automatically slaves of the Datu.
The characteristics of Ubo is Some of the Men have
long hair and use it as Tuko and have earings, Men are
always use Ulow in their heads, always Lemumak Kfilan
or Sudong or Buyus. If Datu, he have always Bodyguard.
For Womens they always wear Kgal Nsif or Tnalak, With
Tugublis with their Hand, Singkil for their feet this
Characteristic is only for Libun Boi. Ubo has also a
characteristic of many wives, as long as he can manage
them.
Lamfugon, Tasiman and Luhib is the land of Ubo,
they are known as fighter of tribe. It is not wondrous that
the place has many slaves and used by the datus as bet
for their games, resulting that many people died in the
area of Ubo.

During late 14
th
century Lamfugon is a barter center,
a place wherein people exchange their products.
Different tribes come in the area like: Blaan, Sangil,
Manubo, Ubo, Tboli , Teduray and Muslim. They came
from minority group of upper and lower valley of South
Cotabato, and even other nearby places of Mindanao.
One of the Area of ubo is called ``Lamfugon a native
word which means kill down or many died in this place
during tribal wars.
Ubo tribe was expose and known, in late 60s and
70s when many Christians came from Luzon and Visayas,
come to the area of Ubo. During that time there comes
many conflicts between Christian and tribe. That time
Manuel Elizalde Jr. recommended to the national
government of the Philippines, to let Datu Mai Tuan to
become chief negotiator of the tribe. And it was
approved through President Ferdinand Marcos, in order
to resolve the conflicts between Christian and tribe.
The president form one group for tribe which is called
(PANAMIN) and appointed Manuel Elizalde Jr. as head of
this President body. This special body was tasked to
restore peace between Christian and Ubo tribe. And

During that time President Marcos Was proclaimed the
whole area of ubo tribe as DATU MA FALEN
RESERVATION that time Ubo tribe was settle down.

In early 70s, Habaluyas Enterprises, the logging
company, merged the area for logging concession and
stayed in Lamfugon as their docking point of their logs
from different places. And Also this was the time when
ILAGA for Christian, and BLACK SHIRT for Muslim again
discriminate the tribe and get all their farm products like
upland rice, and livestocks and of course grab the land of
the Ubo tribe even this already proclaimed as Ma Falen
Reservation. The War again explodes because the tribe

Arrow as their gun against the ILAGA troops and Black
Shirt Troops, and that time there were many of the

Datu Dalig, Datu Sawang, Datu Ayaw, Datu Anggay and
Datu Manumba. And During that time Datu Ontog
Logong is the Only Ubo who was the educated one, then
he requested the President Thru Datu Mai Tuan to assist
the tribe for the said conflict. Then it was granted by the
President and he designated Joe Torres as leader of the
Army to lead the tribal warrior to conquer the enemy.
And at the same time the President also ordered to issue
high powered gun to the tribe as their defense security.
And with that the tribe again wins and put in place
because of the assessment of the President.
In 1983, Lamfugon was approved to be a barangay
though the request of Tboli Municipality and was
approved by the President Proclamation No. 1211
creating the barangay under that said town. But when
Lake Sebu was proclaimed as the new Municipality of
South Cotabato, Lamfugon was one of the 19 Barangay
under the said Municipality. It is located in the western
part of Lake Sebu with a distance of 12 Kilometers from
the Poblacion. The First Barangay Captain of Lamfugon
was Datu Ontog Logong. And this was the only Barangay
Ruled by the Ubo tribe and later On, One of the Sitio Of

Barangay Lamfugon which is Barangay Tasiman is also
approved as Barangay under also in the ubo area during
the Plebiscite in 1986 and the appointed Barangay
Captain is also member of the Ubo in the person of Datu
Odos Angkoy. And Because of the Peace negotiation of
Datu Mai Tuan and Datu Ontog Logong Barangay Luhib
was the first Barangay under the Ubo area, but ruled by
the Christian was not be conflicted because as their
agreement Barangay Luhib must be ruled by Christian as
partner of Barangay Lamfugon to resolve conflicts
between tribe and Christians.
When Datu Ontog Logong Was the Barangay
Captain, and since he has now the power and authority,
He started again to Process the land Claims of the Ubo
for how many years of processing, In 1995 the Ancestral
Domain Management Plan was being formulated by the
Ubo Tribal Leaders, in partnership with the Tboli Leaders
as their tool for the Approval of the Ancestral Domain of
Tboli and Ubo in the Municipality of Lake Sebu. Datu
Ontog Logong was the Leader in the Processing for Ubo
Tribe and Datu Tabidad Ungkal was the leader of the
Tboli Tribe. In early 1997 the Tboli claim and Ubo claim

was delineated. And also the same year the Ancestral
Domain of Tboli and Ubo was being approved during the
time of Secretary Victor O. Ramos as unified claim but
separate in Numbers CADC 003 for Tboli and it is chaired
by Datu Tabidad Ungkal and CADC 004 for Ubo and
Chaired by Datu Ontog Logong. And During that Time
they also formed a Peoples Organization which is Lake
Sebu Ancestral Domain Community Association Inc.
(LASADCA) who will be the Organization of the tribe to
oversee and protect the domain of two (2) tribe. CADC
004 of ubo has a total land area of 19,732 hectares. The
Association was chaired by Datu Ontog Logong and Datu
Tabidad Ungkal as the Vice Chairperson. Datu Ontog
Logong is managing the association Very well, and at the
same time he is the Barangay Captain of Lamfugon, Lake
Sebu, South Cotabato. At the same time Datu Ontog
Logong was the member of National Anti-Poverty
Commission (NAPC).
Datu Ontog Logong was elected Association of
Barangay Captains (ABC) President in 2002. He was that
time Ex-Officio and member of the Sangguniang Bayan of
the Municipality of Lake Sebu. Datu Ontog Logong was

assassinated On February 17, 2003 after their
Sangguniang Bayan Session, and he was assassinated at
Sitio Lugan, Poblacion, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, by un
identified Killer. And He was died on the same date. After
the death of Datu Ontog Logong, the following day DILG
taking Oath Datu Leo Tang the Number One Kagawad of
the Barangay as the Successor Barangay Captain, and at
the same time The council of Elders member of the
LASADCA held and election, and he was the elect
president of the said Association. During that time the
Council of Elders was endorse Datu Nongos Tuhitum as
holder of CADC 003 for Tboli and Datu Uyod Logong as
holder of CADC 004 for Ubo. Datu Leo Tang and Datu
Benito Blonto were also endorsed by the Council as
representative of the two (2) tribe to process the claim
into CADT, and it was already approved, bearing the
CADT No. R12-Lak-0110-155. And now we were already
submit our application for CALT to distribute the
Ancestral Domain into Individual clans. And the person
we were authorized to process was Datu Leo T. Tang for
Ubo and Datu Benito Blonto for Tboli. For Now, we had
also submitted all the pertinent documents to the
Central Office of DPWH, because we will claim our rights

over the ancestral domain that had been traversed by
the National road, The Surallah-Lake Sebu and Maitum
road connection. We are also very grateful because our
claim for the Road Right of way was being approved since
we are the legitimate claimant, because we had already
the Ancestral Domain Title. On the other hand we were
also so very grateful because as of now, our customary
law and practices is already put into written in
preparation as guidelines of the New Generation. Even
the practice is still in existing. We were so very thankful
thru the assessment of the LUMAD DEVELOPMENT
CENTER INC. (LDCI) for their support and effort in
conducting; trainings, seminars and at the same time in
researching the custom and tradition of ubo. The
customary law of Ubo was approved last August 5-6, at
Barangay Lamfugon, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato by 400
identified ubo leaders, and this was witnessed by the
Regional Director of NCIP and other NGOs. The installed
leaders of the ubo were confirmed and take oath by Hon.
Floro Gandam, the Municipal Vive Mayor of the
Municipality of Lake Sebu. Until now the installed leader
of the ubo tribe are the responsible of Territory
protection, preservation of the custom and tradition and

at the same time responsible for the formulation of the
Sustainable Development Plan. At the same time all the
conflicts arises within the ubo area, the Installed leaders
is automatic the justices in partnership with the Barangay
Officials. And just recently there were two ubo killed by
ubo also. But this was not endorsed to the Police even
this is already police matter, because they respected our
rights. The Respondent was paid 10 horses and 2 carabao
as payment to his case.
In 2009, The IPMR was formed in by Barangay. And
after the Barangay, it was the selection and
endorsement for the Municipal IPMR. And that time,
Datu Leo T. Tang Was the endorsed Municipal IPMR
through consensus in 2010 but there was no Certificate
of Affirmation (COA) from the NCIP because of the
controversy between 2 tribe, Political Leader of Lake
Sebu and even Provincial Political Leader was ride on the
IPMR issue, The NCIP again revalidated the IPMR in the
Barangay Level in the year 2012, and that time there is
an issued COA by the NCIP to all the members of IPMR in
every Barangay and at the same time the Municipal
IPMR. December 25, on the same year all the members

of IPMR in Lake Sebu were taking oath by the Former
Provincial Governor Arthur Pingoy. But until at the
present, the Municipal IPMR has not assumed office,
because The Municipal officials are not favor to Datu Leo
T. Tang just because of Political Motivation. On the other
hand, only 2 Barangays had already incentives. The IPMR
of Barangay Lamdalag under Tboli CADT and IPMR of
Lamfugon under the Ubo CADT. Just recently, there was
a committee hearing by the Sanggguniang Bayan
Members and the Barangay Captains and the mayor.
They both agreed that the IPMR in the Barangay and the
Municipal IPMR will be fully implement on 2015, and
include it on the Budget Breakdown for the Annual Year
2015.
Regarding the Territory Protection, ubo domain have
just a little problem, because the Department of Agrarian
Reform (DAR) entered the domain of ubo to issue the
Handog Titulo Program but this was not alarmed us
because this will be invalid since, the ancestral Domain of
Ubo is already delineated and approved.
And lastly, just and information we had registered

be accredited in the Municipal Level and Provincial Level.
Because we wanted to be recognized by the Local
Government, even our process for the justice system of
the tribe still exists, to make sure that we the ubo tribe
will not violate the Philippine Constitution, although we
have already the right to self-determination and at the
same time our right over our ancestral Domain, but still
we are under the Philippine Constitution.

This is my short sharing about our tribe UBO for
now, we are in the rat race to achieve our Specific Goal
which is Preservation of the Custom and Tradition,
Protection of the Ancestral Domain and Implementation
of the Sustainable Development Programs for the Ubo
Community.
