Definitions
Imperialism- the economic and political domination of a strong nation over a weaker one.
Was how the European countries got all their raw materials. Also countries like Hawaii did not stand a
chance if America did not annex them.
Protectorate- imperial power allowed the local rulers to stay in control.
Cuba was a Untied States protectorate. The local rulers remained in power and protected them against
rebellions and invasions.
Anglo-Saxism- similar to manifest destiny
Very popular in England and the United States. It had been linked to manifest destiny.
Matthew C. Perry-took a naval fleet to Japan to negotiate a trade treaty.
First man not from Chinese and Dutch decent to travel to Japan. Won the Japanese over with the
technology that we had.
Queen Liliuokalani- Queen of Hawaii
She was the queen of Hawaii before they got annexed. She did not like the influence the American
settlers had gained in Hawaii. In January 1893 she tried to impose a new constitution.
Pan-Americanism- idea that the United States and Latin America should work together
This was a way to support peace and trade within the countries.
Jose Marti- a writer and a poet
He brought together Cuban exile groups in NYC in the 1880s. Trained troops, purchased weapons, and
raised funds for an invasion of Cuba.
William Randolph Hearst-owner of the New York Journal
Reported outrageous stories about how the Spanish were feeding the Cubans to sharks and dogs.
Joseph Pulitzer-owner of the New York World
The World describes Cuba as a place with blood on everything.
Yellow Journalism-made up stories
Exaggerated stories to attract readers.
Autonomy-right to your own government
The Spanish offered Cuba this. But only if Cuba remains part of the Spanish empire.
Jingoism-aggressive nationalism
Democrats wanted to go to war. The Republicans feel like if they didnt go to war that they will lose the
election of 1900.
Emilio Aguinaldo-Filipino revolutionary leader
This man was an ally of the United States in the Spanish-American war. But would not help if the
Americans did not offer his country freedom. But after the war the United States decided to annex the
Philippines and Aguinaldo got very upset
Platt Amendment-an additional amendment to Cubas constitution
Says that Cuba cant make any treaty with another nation that would weaken its independence. Cuba
has to allow the U.S. to buy or lease naval stations in Cuba. Finally, Cubas debt had to be kept low to
prevent foreign countries from landing troops to enforce payments.
Foraker Act-congress passed this act giving Puerto Rico a civil Government.
After this act was passed Puerto Rico got a governor, an elected council, and an elected legislature.
Sphere of Influence-an area where a foreign nation controlled economic development such as railroad
construction and mining
A sphere of influence is controlled by countries leaseholders. In Chinas case it was countries like Britain,
France, and the United States.
Open Door Policy-all countries are allowed to trade with China
John Hay sent leaseholds to all countries asking them not to discriminate against other nations wanting
to do business in their sphere of influence.
Boxer Rebellion-a rebellion where the boxers went through China killing 200 people and taking others
prisoner.
The boxer rebellion was a huge rebellion because once the German ambassador to China was killed 8
countries came to intervene. 50,000 troops arrived in China including 3,400 Americans. They came to
rescue the foreigners and smash the rebellion.
Hay-Pauncefote Treaty-Gave America the exclusive right to build a canal through central America.
This treaty gave the U.S. the right to build a canal in Central America. The canal that they built is known
as the Panama Canal.
Roosevelt Corollary-A address that was made by Roosevelt
This address was similar to the Monroe Doctrine.
Dollar Diplomacy-American businesses will get trade and profit while Latin America would rise out of
poverty.
Businesses in America will help the Latin American countries.
Victoriano Huerta-general who took over Mexico after the death of Francisco Madero
Madero was murdered on Huertas order. Huertas brutality repulsed president at the time Woodrow
Wilson.
Pancho Villa- leader of the guerrillas
Raided the town of Columbus, New Mexico. That raid killed 16 Americans. But they also burned the
town.
Guerrilla-an armed band that uses surprise attacks and sabotage rather than open warfare.
The other name for it is guerrilla warfare. This type of war tactic was used during the civil war when
Robert E. Lee used it to attack the northerners.
