Rhythm - e.g. use of repetition, syncopation, note durations -the main melody is repeated several times up and down the octave -there are only small sections that are syncopated, the main melody is hardly syncopated nor is the rhythm too complex -the duration of the notes are all quite short -there are particularly a lot of triplets 1b. Melody - ascending descending repetition, intervals, scales, modes, shape / stepwise motion and leaps -the melody is fairly symmetrical as is ascends then descends shortly after -it begins of in a minor key but one of the melodys is in a major key -the majority of the piece moves in leaps but there are some small parts that move in steps 1.c Dynamics - crescendo, decrescendo, accent, loud and soft passages -it is loud for basically the whole song - 1d. Analysis 1 Student name: Caitlyn van Dord Date: 7/08/14 Questions Artist: Boy & Bear Song Name: Harlequin Dream Performance: Get Up & Dance tour Friday September 5 th 2014, Palais Theatre, St.Kilda, Australia 1. Describe how the following musical elements are being embellished / developed throughout the improvisation:
1a. Rhythm - e.g. use of repetition, syncopation, note durations -one guitar has a fairly repetitive part as they have a short note followed by a slightly longer note each bar (slightly syncopated)and the other has arpeggio-like rhythms -the drum beat is fairly basic -the guitar and saxophone start by playing the same rhythm then after 16 odd bars the guitar goes back to playing the more simple rhythm while the saxophone takes the solo -some runs are used in the sax solo 1b. Melody - ascending descending repetition, intervals, scales, modes, shape / stepwise motion and leaps -in a minor key -saxophone solo is short but fairly jumpy but in some parts moving in step 1.c Dynamics - crescendo, decrescendo, accent, loud and soft passages -the saxophone & guitar are loud then when the saxophone is soloing alone, it starts off softer then crescendos & decrescendos 1d. Tone clean, processed, articulation -a clean tone is used -some staccato and tenuto is used 2. Identify potential OHS risks or challenges posed by the performance style. -they dont really move around too much but when they do, they is potential risk of falling over chords/lights/instruments/instrument stands/platforms -bright/flashing lights in eyes 3. Describe how the musicians interact with the other band members -in between songs the briefly talk to each other, making comments about each other 4. Describe how the musicians communicate with the audience before, between and after performances -they talk briefly to the audience & each other about little things that had happened during the day or the previous night -saying the audience sounds like a jungle and we all sound like orangutangs cheering in the audience -apologising to the audience for calling the tour Get Up & Dance tour even though we werent allowed to actually get up and dance at the venue 5. What cues musical or visual were used to start or end improvised sequences of music? -they have pre organised before the concert when the solo is going to take place and how long it is going to go for -they face each other
6. Describe the use of rhythm, dynamics, texture used by the accompanists whilst the solo is being performed. -the drum beat is quite syncopated -one guitar is playing a melody over the solo -the other guitar is playing chords but with just two strums in a bar (playing the chords in a particular rhythm) -bass guitar has longer notes than what it usually plays for the rest of the song -the texture of the accompanying instruments appears slightly thinner as the dynamic level has dropped a little bit and the percussionist doesnt use as many parts of the drums as the previous part -the rhythms played by the guitars are roughly the same as the rest of the song

Melody - ascending descending repetition, intervals, scales, modes, shape / stepwise motion and leaps -in a major key -the melody mostly moves in steps and is fairly symmetrical in the verse and moves more by leaping in the chorus 1.c Dynamics - crescendo, decrescendo, accent, loud and soft passages -the dynamics vary dramatically within the whole song, quite is the verses, loud in the chorus -in the solo section the dynamics are all quite similar with limited crescendos and decrescendos, it stays at a moderately loud volume 1d.
