musical elements are being
embellished / developed
throughout the improvisation:
The whole song is an improvised version of Jewish Wedding with
parts of Hava Nagila in it
1a. Rhythm - e.g. use of
repetition, syncopation, note
durations
-the main melody is repeated several times up and down the octave
-there are only small sections that are syncopated, the main melody
is hardly syncopated nor is the rhythm too complex
-the duration of the notes are all quite short
-there are particularly a lot of triplets
1b. Melody - ascending
descending repetition,
intervals, scales, modes,
shape / stepwise motion and
leaps
-the melody is fairly symmetrical as is ascends then descends
shortly after
-it begins of in a minor key but one of the melodys is in a major key
-the majority of the piece moves in leaps but there are some small
parts that move in steps
1.c Dynamics - crescendo,
decrescendo, accent, loud and
soft passages
-it is loud for basically the whole song

-a lot of the notes are articulated with accents
-there are a fair amount of trills

-he could trip/fall over whilst dancing
-he could fall down the stairs

-there is no real audience besides the general public who stop to
listen to him play on the streets, he takes his hat off, bows and then
smiles at them

-the whole song is improvised with no other musicians

throughout the improvisation:

1a. Rhythm - e.g. use of
repetition, syncopation, note
durations
-one guitar has a fairly repetitive part as they have a short note
followed by a slightly longer note each bar (slightly syncopated)and
the other has arpeggio-like rhythms
-the drum beat is fairly basic
-the guitar and saxophone start by playing the same rhythm then
after 16 odd bars the guitar goes back to playing the more simple
rhythm while the saxophone takes the solo
-some runs are used in the sax solo
1b. Melody - ascending
descending repetition,
intervals, scales, modes,
shape / stepwise motion and
leaps
-in a minor key
-saxophone solo is short but fairly jumpy but in some parts moving
in step
1.c Dynamics - crescendo,
decrescendo, accent, loud and
soft passages
-the saxophone & guitar are loud then when the saxophone is
soloing alone, it starts off softer then crescendos & decrescendos

-a clean tone is used
-some staccato and tenuto is used

-they dont really move around too much but when they do, they is
potential risk of falling over chords/lights/instruments/instrument
stands/platforms
-bright/flashing lights in eyes

members
-in between songs the briefly talk to each other, making comments
about each other

communicate with the
audience before, between
and after performances
-they talk briefly to the audience & each other about little things
that had happened during the day or the previous night
-saying the audience sounds like a jungle and we all sound like
orangutangs cheering in the audience
-apologising to the audience for calling the tour Get Up & Dance
tour even though we werent allowed to actually get up and dance
at the venue

were used to start or end
improvised sequences of
music?
-they have pre organised before the concert when the solo is going
to take place and how long it is going to go for
-they face each other

6. Describe the use of rhythm,
dynamics, texture used by the
accompanists whilst the solo
is being performed.
-the drum beat is quite syncopated
-one guitar is playing a melody over the solo
-the other guitar is playing chords but with just two strums in a bar
(playing the chords in a particular rhythm)
-bass guitar has longer notes than what it usually plays for the rest
of the song
-the texture of the accompanying instruments appears slightly
thinner as the dynamic level has dropped a little bit and the
percussionist doesnt use as many parts of the drums as the
previous part
-the rhythms played by the guitars are roughly the same as the rest
of the song

-finger picking is repeated frequently throughout the whole song
and in the solo section, mainly picking arpeggios
-a fair amount of syncopation is used within the finger picking
-the notes of the bass and banjo are fairly short
-the rhythms are also quite repetitive
1b. Melody - ascending
descending repetition,
intervals, scales, modes,
shape / stepwise motion and
leaps
-in a major key
-the melody mostly moves in steps and is fairly symmetrical in the
verse and moves more by leaping in the chorus
1.c Dynamics - crescendo,
decrescendo, accent, loud and
soft passages
-the dynamics vary dramatically within the whole song, quite is the
verses, loud in the chorus
-in the solo section the dynamics are all quite similar with limited
crescendos and decrescendos, it stays at a moderately loud volume

articulation
-tone of singing is clean, clear and is articulated with mainly legato
in the verses
-melody is accented in the chorus
-banjo is staccato
-there is no singing in the solo section but the guitar (which takes
the solo) has a clean tone which is articulated with slurs, staccato
and slides to neighbouring notes
