Health
1.Cold, heat, breathing, these three are bodily elements both good and bad.
When these are in unison or equal proportion in the body, such a body is called a
healthy body.
2.Equanimity, activity, and inaction form the three characteristics of the mind. A
mind which constitutes these three characteristics in due proportion is called a
healthy mind.
4.Abnormal state of the body caused by mind problem and the imbalance in
blood circulation are known as defects. A harmonious blending of the functions
of the system is a symptom of good health. In medical science the former is
known as unhappiness (sorrow), and the latter is called happiness.
5.What is good fortune? Healthy mind and body who is truly a well to do man?
An agriculturist. Whom does sin not trouble? One who meditates. Who is a
complete man? A person with wise progeny.
6. Fair-mindedness, learning, health and satisfaction are considered the best
among virtues, wealth, benefit and happiness respectively.
7. A person, free from debt, diseases, restlessness while taking food and no

learning which helps earning money.
11. Oh King, there are six types of happiness in this world Health, freedom
from debt, not obliged to go far away for a livelihood, eternal company of
decent people, job satisfaction and fearless abode.
12. Health, Learning, Company of the wise, Birth in a reputed family and
freedom from dependence are assets even without having money as commonly
understood.
13. An agriculturist is always free from want of food. A person with no disease is
always happy. A householder with a loving wife is always full of gaiety.
14. A healthy person does not want to go to a physician. Similarly, a king free
from tension and danger, does not want to be in touch with a minister.
15. Parvati! Are you easily getting twigs and blades of kusha grass for
performing sacrifices? Is there facility for clean water for bathing etc.? Is
meditation going on without any break? I am asking these because a healthy
body alone is fit for religious practices.
16. If a body is well guarded as a city, practice of yoga and attainment of bilss
are automatically assured.
17. A fondness of protecting ones body is not futile. Without physical fitness,
mental alertness is not possible. How can there be deep devotion to lord Shiva in
the absence of a sound mind?
18. Ignoring everything, one has to guard his/her health- If health is lost
everything is lost.
19. Charity, religion, learning, physical charm, character, racial purity, health
and fame, all these nine qualities have to be carefully guarded.
20. One, who wants to live full span of life to enjoy the ultimate goals of life
such as Dharma, Artha etc. has to follow the instructions of medical science.
21. Body is the foundation for maintaining health. At the same time, the body is
the vehicle for contacting diseases. As the person directs the body to act, the
body enjoys health for suffers.

2. Vayu assumes the cover of body. Vayu motivates every action, big or small,
of the body. Vayu controls the mind. Vayu inspires all the senses and makes the
mind attracted by the sense objects. Vayu is the eternal witness.

Pg. no. 20

Controlling mind thru pranayama

20. When the Vital Element is restless, the mind also becomes restive. When the
vital element is steady, the mind also remains steady. With this steadiness, a
Yogi attains perfection. So, one would do well to practice Pranayama.

21. With breath-control, mind-control becomes possible. With mind-control,
breath-control becomes easy.

smearing the body with sacred ashes, Vayavya by dust raised by cow-hoofs
falling on the body, Divya-bathing in rain water in sunshine, Varuna- plunging in
water and Manas bath by meditation.

Bathing and mind
12. Bathing keeps the mind cheerful, wards off bad dreams, strengthens the
bases of sanctity, removes impurities, enhances luster, beautifies form, wipes off
an enemy, inspires warmth of love, helps in attracting women and relieves
exhaustion.

17. Implicit faith in ones religion is steadiness. Control of senses is religion.
Removal of minds impurities is bathing. Protection of the living creatures is
charity.

18. Bathing in water keeps the body clean. If it is not permissible, reading of
holy texts, self-restraint and meditation can be practiced to keep the mind
tranquil.

Chapter 9 antarbahyasouchavigyaneeyam Personal Hygiene

3. There are five types of freedom from pollution, related to mind, action, family,
body and speech.

4. Among these five, freedom from pollution of the mind is noteworthy. A person
whose mind is free from pollution attains heaven.

5. Freedom from pollution is of two kinds internal and external. External
pollution is washed away by mud and water. Internal pollution vanishes when
the mind is pure.

12. Water helps in keeping the body clean. Truth helps in keeping the mind
pure. Learning and penance cleanse inward soul. Knowledge purifies the mind.

13. Religious practice and spiritual knowledge keep the mind pure.

14. Oh, scion of Pandu! Bathe in the river of self knowledge where water is
truth, the two banks are, conduct self-restraint forms the steps to climb up and
down, compassion, the ripples. Bathing in mere water does not purify the soul.

15. An evil doers mind never becomes pure howsoever many times that person
massages his body with mud or takes bath in rivers or holy pilgrimage centres.

16. Without devotion to the lotus feet of lord Krishna, the soul is never purified.
Saline water cleans clothes. Similarly, devotion purifies the mind.

17. With purity of mind alone, persons are truly purified. There is no doubt about
it. It is futile to try to clean only the body.

26. Garga and other sages are of the view that house-construction is beneficial
in a size which attracts both mind and eyes.

29. By cultivating the habit of internal cleanliness, you develop capacity for
keeping thought pure, keeping the mind pleasant, enabling mind concentration,
controlling the senses and self realization.

Pg. no. 30, Chapter 10

14. Walk on the known path. Drink water after straining it with cloth. Speak
language purified by truth. Act according to what the mind considers sacred.

17. Vessels are cleaned by mud and water. River water gets purified by steady
flow. The mind of a woman, tempted to enjoy the company of an outsider, is
purified by periodic menstruation. A Brahmin becomes pure by renunciation.

Pg. no. 45, Chapter 13

42. Avoid jealousy, fear, anger, temptation, enmity. While sick, avoid
wholesome food. Such a food is not digested properly.

Pg. no. 50, Chapter 14

8. Even limited diet and healthy food are not digested due to anxiety, fear,
anger, unhappiness, sleeping in daytime and waking at night.

Pg. no. 53, Chapter 15

14. There is no sorrow like hunger. There is no disease like hunger. Nothing is
more friendly than food. There is no other enemy than anger.

Pg. no. 60, Chapter 17

4. A born-blind does not see good or bad. But an infatuated person, intoxicated
person, and a miser, do not see anything bad.

9-10. Dhritarashtra! These are the ten evil traits. Please note them: vanity, high
vanity, madness, exhaustion, hunger, haste, hunting, fear, lust and good people
should not keep company with them.

Pg. no. 64, Chapter 18

4. Set aside looking, speaking, sporting, laughing for fun, playing and
embracing. Even to remember a woman is enough to arouse sensation.

5. Mere thought of a woman unsettles the mind of the creator. What to speak of
persons who are out to satisfy lust?

6. Even a look at the beautiful woman created by the creator is akin to snake-
poison. So, those who want to secure their well-being, should not entertain any
thought of a woman.

34. One who seeks satisfaction in lust is a lustful person. One who seeks control
of senses is a celibate person. One who seeks control of senses is a celibate.

Pg. no. 76, Chapter 20

12. Lust is not satisfied with a desire for intercourse. It increases in leaps and
bounds like a flame which increases when ghee is poured in fire.

18. Attachment for a man by a woman or attachment for a woman by a man is
lust.

22. There is no ailment akin to lust. There is no enemy akin to blind attachment.
There is no fire akin to anger. There is no happiness akin to self-knowledge.

23. Youth and earthy possessions of persons are sacrificed in the flame of
infatuation fanned by lust.

27. Look at the insentient clouds formed out of smoke, lightning, water and air.
Look at the message of love communicated by the sentient beings. An over
enthusiastic Yaksha is never bothered about anything. Verily infatuated persons
are incapable of marking the difference between sentients and insentients.
Persons blinded by infatuation and who are off their minds never bother about
sentient insentient, agreeable disagreeable, favorable unfavorable,
significant insignificant, good-bad, etc.

29. Knowledge of the wise dispels arrogance and pride. Knowledge of others
becomes the cause for increasing pride and arrogance. Solitary place is liked by
a person of self-control seeking liberation whereas the same solitude increases
infatuation of a person blinded attachment.

25. An owl cannot see during day time. A crow cannot see at night. But an
infatuated person is a specimen who neither sees during day nor at night.

32. Of course, lust has to be discarded. If it is not possible to discard it, direct it
towards your wife. She is its proper healer.

33. A mind after the pursuit of sense-pleasures gets attached to them.
Attachment results in lust. Lust, when not satisfied, causes anger.

34. Anger causes disillusionment. Disillusionment results in the loss of memory.
Loss of memory wipes out reasoning capacity. With reasoning lost, everything is
lost.

35. One should know the defects of lust. Vatsyayana observes thus, Because
there are mendicants, nobody stops preparing food. Because there are grazing
animals, nobody stops sowing the field with seeds.

37. One who does not follow rules and regulations elaborated in Shastras and is
guided only by blind love, neither attains happiness nor liberation.

38. Diseases caused by sense-desires can be cured only by avoiding them. No
other medicine, pilgrimage or sacred hymn, can cure them.

40. Liberation is the cessation of sense-desires Captivity is the result of
attachment to them. In brief, this is science. Do as you like.
