Generic Name
: Dobutamine

Brand Name:
Dobutrex

Vasopressors

a direct-acting agent
whose primary activity
results from stimulation of
the
1
-adrenoceptors of
the heart, increasing
contractility and cardiac
output. Since it does not
act on dopamine
receptors to induce the
release
of norepinephrine (another

1
agonist), dobutamine is
less prone to induce
hypertension than
is dopamine.

This medication
is a
sympathomimetic
compound used
in the treatment
of heart failure
and cardiogenic
shock. It
stimulates the
heart muscle.

Contraindicated in
patients with
hypersensitivity;
idiopathic
hypertrophic
subaortic stenosis
(Obstruction of
the flow of blood
out of the left
ventricle due to
enlargement of
the ventricular
septum),
Tachydsrhythmias.

Heart-
Increased heart
rate and blood
pressure, chest
pain,
palpitation.
Local-
Inflammation of
vein.
Miscellaneous-
Nausea,
vomiting,
headache,
anxiety, fatigue
and shortness
of breath
Potentially
Fatal- Heart
diseases.

Observe IV site
closely and avoid
extravasation.
Dobutamine can
cause
inflammatory
response and
tissue ischaemia.
Monitor for
adverse reactions
Continuous
blood pressure
monitoring
Continuous
cardiorespiratory
monitoring
Document vital
signs hourly and
PRN
Monitor fluid
balance

(mineralocorticoid)
actions. Some
actions may be
undesirable,
depending on drug
use.

This medication

and minimize HPA
suppression.
Space multiple
doses evenly
throughout the day.
Do not give IM
injections if patient has
thrombocytopenic pur
pura.
Rotate sites of IM
repository injections to
avoid local atrophy.
Use minimal
doses for minimal
duration to minimize
adverse effects.
Taper doses when
discontinuing high-
dose or long-term
therapy.
Arrange for
increased dosage when
patient is subject to
