CASE STUDY OUTLINE

Case studies should generally subscribe to the following organiation!

Title. A thoughtful title that ca"tures the essence of the case study#
Abstract. $or Su%%ary& A one' or two'"aragra"h state%ent su%%ing u" the
study $what( why( when( where( how( and who&# This su%%ary introduces the
"ro)ect( *uestions( hy"othesis( and highlights of the i%"ortant +ndings#
Introduction. $or ,ac-ground&# Describes what you did( and why it was of
interest.o"ens the door to the case study and tries to get the "assersby to
enter# Ty"ically se/eral "aragra"hs( the introduction includes bac-ground
infor%ation about the building0s"ace( the designer1s intent( the %yriad of
interesting to"ics to study( what s"ar-ed your tea%1s curiosity( and how the
tea% decided on the to"ic#
Hypothesis. $or 2y"otheses&# 3resents the hy"othesis $or hy"otheses& that
is the basis of your in/estigation( describes the *uestion$s& that led to
de/elo"%ent of the hy"othesis( and e4"lains why the hy"othesis was fra%ed
as it was $technical bac-ground( design interest( occu"ant concerns( etc#&#
Include a series of in*uiry *uestions that would logically hel" you
substantiate or refute the hy"othesis# These will logically ser/e as ste""ing'
stones for the %ethodology#
Methodology# Describes the ste"'by'ste" "rocedure e%"loyed and e4"lains
why it is a""ro"riate to this case study( "ro/ides details of how( what( when(
where( and who# It should be easily re"eatable by another tea%#
Results $or Data&# 3resents the data that were collected $so the reader can
%a-e a )udg%ent about your wor- based on sa%e infor%ation you used&5 the
data should be organied and "rocessed to so%e e4tent for clarity but should
not be )ust a su%%ary#
Analysis# An e4"lanation of what the infor%ation you collected %eans in the
conte4t of the building( hy"othesis( and %ethods# The results $abo/e& are )ust
6facts57 the analysis is your inter"retation $or o"inion& of what the facts
%ean#
Conclusions# A fairly concise state%ent of what the case study found and
what you ha/e learned# 8as the hy"othesis "ro/ed9 Can you e4"lain what
you found if there are odd things showing u"9 Can you reco%%end further
wor- in this area of "erfor%ance or design9 Can you suggest i%"ro/e%ents
in %ethods for future case study de/elo"ers9 8hat are the design 6lessons
learned79
References# 3ro/ide a list of a""licable references5 generally include only
citations to %aterials that were critical to your case study $i#e#( not a long
bibliogra"hy&#
