Find out how Swathi, Vikram and Prakash discovered the endless possibilities of working with Flipkart. Why Join? Swathi pulled in to the parking lot of the new Flipkart warehouse. It towered over her and she couldnt help but look back at the year and a half she had been there. When she had started, the warehouse had just been a tiny blimp on the radar a mere 6000 square feet. But now, it had grown to 200000 square feet and she knew shed played a big part in bringing it to its current state. Of course, she had an incredible team and everyone had played their part but that was the thing about working here, everyone brought something to the table. Something signifcant. And if she didnt have such incredible, like-minded co- workers, she knew she would never have made it this far. Unlike her previous workplace, Flipkart didnt believe in just coming up with great ideas, it was about implementing them as well. Ideas werent put on hold until Swathis story - The Speed of Growth the right approvals came in from senior management. Here, processes were much quicker and people didnt have to wait long for the green signal. They were all empowered to take decisions. That was the only way to move forward at Flipkart. It was about thinking for the future, as well as for now. As she made her way into the new facility, Swathi couldnt help but feel silly about the frst impressions shed had. Shed initially been very skeptical. After all, their warehouse was tiny only 6000 square feet. But within her frst week, shed seen it grow and shed seen why. The people who worked there were unlike anywhere else. They were ALWAYS looking to push themselves and do more. Now, eighteen months and two promotions later, Swathi was on top of the world and was only looking to climb higher. She saw her colleague Dinesh run by her. Another thing about Flipkart, nobody walked, they all ran. Thats how excited they were about what they did. Two lakh square feet! Not bad eh? Swathi grinned at Dinesh. He fashed her a smile, Yeah! Now to work at making it even bigger!
Swathi chuckled, but she knew he was right. If you werent growing at Flipkart, you were doing something wrong. When Vikram walked in to work, it was chaotic. A section of one of the warehouses had been burgled and a lot of packages couldnt be accounted for. What was causing people to panic was the fact that they did not know what was in the packages. Sure, there was a record on the computer at the warehouse, but the burglars had lifted it as well. Being an established online market place, warehousing an array of goods from 3rd party vendors was a huge task. Now, fnding the items would mean going through the entire list of orders and matching it with the ones that had already been delivered, the ones that still had to be delivered and the ones that were in the process of being delivered Basically, it was a tonne of extra work and this was unusual at Flipkart, simply because everyone was always working on new things or on improving the Vikrams story - Build New Technologies old ones. There wasnt really all that much backtracking. Vikram hadnt fully understood the situation, because he was a part of the tech team and he didnt involve himself much with the logistics problems. But when he walked into the cafeteria, he overheard someone who sounded quite frantic, I dont know how were going to do this Were probably going to undergo some major loss Vikram was surprised when he found that it was his cousin Rukmini who was doing the talking. She was a newcomer to Flipkart and Vikram had almost forgotten that she even worked there. Hey Rukminiwhats wrong When Rukmini explained the situation to Vikram, he was surprisingly calm, Why is that a problem? but Rukmini was impatient, Nobody from the centre has even checked in yetthey must be losing their shello? she answered her phone, Yes, yes, tell me she walked off. VIkram was a little confused, because he had just designed a system that tracked all the packages, making sure that they were segregated according to where they were being shipped. Finding out what was missing shouldnt have been a problem at all. Rukmini was just returning to her desk, looking relieved, Ok everyone, false alarmthe packages have all been tracked and the insurance company has covered us She turned to Vikram, That was the manager of the warehouseapparently, one of our tech guys recently put in a system which allowed them to track the packages Vikram laughed to himself as he walked back to his desk. The tech team at Flipkart was always creating new technologies, so much so that sometimes, newcomers like his cousin Rukmini, lost track of what had been created! But that was the beauty of the placeit was the beauty of Flipkart. Prakash prepared to hurry out of the conference room. The latest Flipkart monthly review meeting had just fnished and there was a lot of work to be done. Ever since the review meetings had begun, things had really picked up pace at Flipkart. The different departments were all on the same page and were working towards common goals. More problems were identifed and rectifed quickly, and productivity had increased drastically. Prakash smiled to himself. After all, it was his pet project that made it possible for the meetings to take place so seamlessly. Before this, each department had its own meeting and there always existed a communication gap between them. It wasnt possible to have organized inter-departmental meetings simply because different people had different routines. There was so much Prakashs story - Make An Impact innovation that it was chaotic! Prakash knew that the company would be a lot more productive if things were more organized and thats where the challenge lay. He spent the next couple of weeks analyzing the various departments and created a matrix that would track routines, projects and made it possible to keep an account of who was working on what. Using his creation, it was possible to have only the relevant people for a specifc meeting. Flipkart was productive, but Prakash made it a little better. He remembered how surprised he had been when the department heads all listened to his suggestion and unanimously agreed that it was a good idea. That was one of the great things about working at Flipkart, everyone was open to new ideas and there were very approachable, irrespective of what position they held or what department they worked in. Prakash snapped out of his daydream. Why hadnt the conference room emptied out yet? Why was everyone standing aroundHe froze when he realized they were all staring at him. Before he could say anything, one of the heads walked up to him and shook his hand, Prakash, Id like to say something to you on behalf of all of us Prakash looked around. Everybody was smiling at him and nodding, In fact, we must have said this a lot sooneranyway, we shall not keep you for very long. What we wanted to say is that, over the past couple of years, Flipkart has grown at an incredible rate and so has our offering. He handed Prakash a small gift-wrapped box, On behalf of all of us, and everyone working at Flipkart, we would like to say thank you Prakash stood, gaping as everyone took turns to shake his hand. He had never actually realized the magnitude of his impact on the organization, but now that it had put into words, he felt overwhelmed. His small initiative hadnt gone unnoticed.
