1. An English punk band, formed of Steve Jones (guitarist), Paul Cook
(drummer), Glen Matlock (bassist), John Lydon (vocalist) and manager Malcolm McLaren. They were all connected via a boutique in London which was owned by McLaren. Matlock worked at the store whilst the other band members were customers there. (All Music, n.d). 2. The Sex Pistols were formed in 1975, and in 1977, Glen Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious (Wikipedia, 23/09/13 and All Music, n.d). 3. The Sex Pistols evolved from a band called The Strand, a band formed in 1972, consisting of school friends, Steve Jones on vocals and Paul Cook on drums(Sex Pistols Official, n.d) Wally Nightingale was the bands guitarist. The Strand were also sometimes known as The Swankers. Other early line ups of this band included Jim Mackin (an organist) and Stephen Hayes (a bassist). Bassist Del Noones was also briefly a part of the band. The Strand/The Swankers regularly spent their time in two clothing shops on Kings Road. One of these clothes shops was Too fast to live, too young to die, owned by their later manager, Malcolm McLaren. (Wikipedia, 23/09/13) 4. In 1974, Malcolm McLaren became the bands manager, paying for their first forma rehearsal space. At this point, Glen Matlock joined the band as the regular bassist. Between November 1974 and May 1975, McLaren relocated to New York to work with The New York Dolls. During this time, Bernard Rhodes, a friend of McLaren, took charge of the bands rehearsals and consequently, their first public performance. (Wikipedia, 23/09/13) 5. In 1975, when McLaren returned to London, he was more interested in The Strand. At this point, Wally Nightingale was kicked out of the band, and Steve Jones became the bands guitarist, rather than the vocalist. Around this time, the band became QT Jones and the Sex Pistols. (Phil Strongman cited in Wikipedia 23/09/13). The band then began to look for a new vocalist, recruiting John Lydon in 1975. Lydon gained his stage name, Johnny Rotten, shortly after joining the band (All Music, n.d). This is likely to have been a result of his poor dental hygiene (Wikipedia, 23/09/13). 6. After the recruitment of Lydon, the band decided on a final name of The Sex Pistols, an abbreviated version of their informal name QT Jones and the Sex Pistols. The first official gig played by the Sex Pistols was on the 6th November 1975, at Saint Martins College, where Matlock was studying. At this gig, the band were a supporting act for a rock group called Bazooka Joe. Many of their proceeding gigs were played at schools and colleges. (Wikipedia, 23/09/13). 7. A landmark gig for the Sex Pistols took place on the 12 th February 1976, where they supported Eddie and the Hot Rods. This gig gained the band a lot of attention. When interviewed by NME, Jones said Actually, were not into music. Were into chaos.. (Wikipedia, 23/09/13). 8. The bands first gig outside of the UK took place on the 3 rd September 1976, in Paris. Their first album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Heres the Sex Pistols was released in 1977. (Wikipedia, 13/09/13). Following this, they toured the U.S for 14 days in January of 1978. (All Music, n.d)
