Gladiators were a form of entertainment in the Roman Empire and Roman

Republic. They fought bloody battles with condemned criminals, other
gladiators and animals. They were treaded and schooled very harshly and were
not allowed to go out in public. This research report will be about gladiators
and how, where and when they fought.

Roman Gladiators wore a lot of armour when they fought. Some of the items
they had were made out of very heavy metal. A cassis was a large helmet that
coved the entire head with very stylish patterns. Leg padding larger than shin
pads called facia coved all parts of your leg except the back of the thighs.
Artefact 1: They had very large swords called gladiuses. The grip in them is
very large making it comfortable for the gladiator; they
usually have the same design. The blade length could
become up to sixty-eight centimetres long.
Artefact 2: The cuirass which is a
chest plate that covers all parts of
the chest and the back was made out of very thick metal.

Artefact 3: They also had shields to fully cover them called scutums.
Gladiators needed this protection when battling large animals making it
harder for them to get wounded.

Gladiators fought in large stadiums like the most famous one The Colosseum
that could fit up to 80,000 people. The perimeter of the stadium was 545 metres
and had a height of 48 metres. The seating arrangement was in order by the
importance of the person. Senators (a member of arsenate) sat at the bottom,
Equestrians (a rider or performer) sat in the middle, and intermediate
categorised people sat in the second highest seats and women and plebeians sat
at the top. The large building was also called The Flavian Amphitheatre. These
days The Colosseum has become a major tourist attraction and is still in very
good condition.

Gladiators fought criminals, animals and other gladiators. They fought over
thirty different animals including lions, elephants, gorillas and hippos. The
main animal they fight is the tiger. But not all battles involved just gladiators
but sometimes they had animals fighting animals. The most enjoyed and famous
battle was the lion and bull. If the gladiator gets wounded in battle the emperor
would give a signal by giving thumbs up or down determining the gladiators
death.

In conclusion gladiator this research report was about gladiators and how they
fought very harsh bloody battles with animals and other people. It will also be
about what gladiators used when they were in battle. Gladiator fighting was a
very interesting part of Ancient Romes history and wont be forgotten.
