Inhibits DNA
synthesis by
producing cross-
linking of parent
DNA strands (cell-
cycle phase
nonspecific).

Alone or in
combination (with
other
antineoplastics,
surgery, or
radiation) in the
management of:

>Monitor blood
pressure, pulse,
respiratory rate,
and temperature
frequently during
administration.
Report significant
changes.
>Monitor intake
and output and
specific gravity
frequently
throughout
therapy. Report
discrepancies
immediately. To
reduce the risk of
nephrotoxicity, a
urinary output of at
least 100 ml/hr
should be
maintained for 4 hr
before initiating
and for at least 24
hr after
administration.
>Encourage patient

and alkalinization
of the urine may be
used to help
prevent uric acid
nephropathy.
>Assess patency of
IV site frequently
during therapy.

Fluorouracil is
part of a group of
chemotherapy
drugs known as
the anti
metabolites. Anti
metabolites are
similar to normal
body molecules
but they have a
slightly different
structure. These
differences mean
that anti
metabolites stop
cells working
properly. They
stop cells making
and repairing
DNA. Cancer cells
need to make and
repair DNA in
order to grow and
multiply. Anti
metabolites also
stop normal cells
working properly.
This is why you
get side effects.
Used to treat
malignant
neoplasms of
breast, colon,
urinary bladder,
liver, pancreas,
adjuvant to
surgery,
radiotherapy &
other
chemotherapeutic
drugs.
Topical application
in cutaneous basal
