HIV PATHWAY
Residency Contact: Shireesha Dhanireddy, MD, Assistant Medical Director, Madison Clinic,
Harborview Medical Center sdhanir@u.washington.edu
Goal: Train residents with an interest in working abroad or in the WWAMI region to care
for HIV patients in a primary care setting.
HIV Curriculum
Residents interested in a career in HIV medicine should identify themselves as interested
during the first six months of internship. Applications to enter the pathway will be due in
November of the internship year. No changes to the curriculum occur in the first year. During
the PGY 2 and 3 years, residents in the HIV pathway will attend a week continuity clinic at
Madison Clinic at Harborview Medical Center. Madison Clinic provides primary care as well as
subspecialty care for over 2000 patients with HIV.
PATIENT CARE EXPERIENCE
Spectrum/Broad range of disease

Patients at Madison Clinic suffer from a broad range of diseases aside from HIV,
including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, thyroid dysfunction, etc
Clinic day per week (day of week varies depending on call schedule)
During clinic block will complete two to three day sessions per week
PARTICIPATION IN MADISON CLINIC EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
HIV Journal Club (usually occurs 2
nd
and 4
th
Wednesdays) at 8am
(must present at least once a year)
AIDS Clinical Conference, 3
rd
Tuesday of each month at 8am
Clinical Case Conference, one Wednesday per quarter at 8am (will be encouraged to
present a case)
Morbidity and Mortality Conference, one Wednesday per quarter at 8am
HIV noontime lecture series, monthly at HMC (must present once during R3 year)
CAPSTONE
Residents in the pathway will be encouraged to work on a scholarly project based on
their interests.
Examples:

International experience at the end of R3 year with Dr Michael Chung at Coptik Clinic
in Nairobi; Create HIV web-study module on HIV care in developing world.

WWAMI experience in Idaho or Montana; Write case-report.

EXAMINATION
Successfully complete American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM) certification
examination
General Internal Medicine Clinic Curriculum
PARTICIPATION IN GENERAL MEDICINE CLINIC EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Participate in pre-clinic conference at HMC Adult Medicine Clinic prior to each clinic
session from 1 1:30 pm
Participate in HMC AMC journal club once monthly
EVALUATIONS
Regular meetings with General Medicine Residency Program leadership
Regular meetings with Shireesha Dhanireddy
