I DIDN’T GIVE IT MUCH THOUGHT

How often have we heard or said these words, usually after someone’s feelings have been hurt badly or after a
tragic incident has occurred?

Est 6:4-10
4 And the king said, Who is in the court? Now Haman was come into the outward court of the king's house, to
speak unto the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.
5 And the king's servants said unto him, Behold, Haman standeth in the court. And the king said, Let him come
in.
6 So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to
honour? Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to
myself?
7 And Haman answered the king, For the man whom the king delighteth to honour,
8 Let the royal apparel be brought which the king useth to wear, and the horse that the king rideth upon, and the
crown royal which is set upon his head:
9 And let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble princes, that they may
array the man withal whom the king delighteth to honour, and bring him on horseback through the street of the
city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour.
10 Then the king said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel and the horse, as thou hast said, and do even
so to Mordecai the Jew, that sitteth at the king's gate: let nothing fail of all that thou has spoken.

I. THE FIRST THOUGHT OF MANY (MOST?) PEOPLE IS FOR THEMSELVES.

A. They do not give thought to God.
1. Ps 49:6-11
6 They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
8(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)
9 That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
10 For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to
others.
11 Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all
generations; they call their lands after their own names.

2. Matt 6:24-34
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the
one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for
your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly
Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither
do they spin:
29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall
he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be
clothed?
2
32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all
these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.
Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

B. They do not give thought to how harshly they judge others.

1. Matt 7:1-2 Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged:
and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

C. They do not give thought to the needs of others.

1. John 7:23-24 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be
broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? Judge
not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

D. They do not give thought to protecting their hearts.

1. Prov 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

2. Deut 11:16-17 Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve
other gods, and worship them; [Take heed means think carefully about it!] And then the LORD's
wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not
her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you.

3. Luke 21:34-35 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with
surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a
snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

II. MANY (MOST) DO NOT GIVE THOUGHT AS TO HOW THEY COULD HELP OR SAVE OTHERS.
A. They may be more concerned for their own welfare.
1. Est 4:10-14
10 Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;
11 All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or
woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to
death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been
called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
12 And they told to Mordecai Esther's words.
13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's
house, more than all the Jews.
14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the
Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou
art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

III. MANY (MOST) DO NOT MAKE A CONSCIOUS EFFORT TO REMEMBER GOD’S WORDS.
A. Forgetting God’s words leads to losing one’s direction.
1. Deut 4:9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which
thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons,
and thy sons' sons;

2. 2 Chron 19:7 Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is
no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.
3

3. 2 Peter 1:19-21 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take
heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your
hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the
prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by
the Holy Ghost.

IV. TRAGICALLY, OUR EASIEST MEANS OF COMMUNICATION OFTEN GETS THE LEAST
AMOUNT OF THOUGHT.
A. We must control what comes out of our mouths.
1. Matt 15:18-20a But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they
defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false
witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man:

2. Col 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to
answer every man.

3. Ps 39:1 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth
with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.

B. The uncontrolled tongue can wreak immense damage.

1. James 3:1-13
1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to
bridle the whole body.
3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about
with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire
kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole
body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed
of mankind:
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of
God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water
and fresh.
13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his
works with meekness of wisdom.

CONCLUSION: Ps 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in
thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

GIVE IT A LOT OF THOUGHT! Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand
against the wiles of the devil .
