ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Firstly, our deepest thanks and gratitude to God for all the blessings upon us and
our family that has given us the strength and leading us the way in making our life as a student
as successful as it could be , and blending fairly and equally with our role as a teacher and also
in our marriage lives.
We would also like to express our thanks and appreciation to our families and
friends that had given us all the support and assistance that we need to go through this
semester smoothly.
As this is a group work task , we would like to express our deepest thanks and
gratitude to our group members for all the effort and hardship in making this task a success.
Without collaborative work , co-operation and commitment from each other , this task will not be
a success. It is hoped that our effort would be fruitful.
Our greatest thanks and gratitude to Miss Norsidah Binti Moideen , our lecturer for
TSL 3105 Teaching Listening and Speaking Skills In The Primary ESL Classroom , for her lively
and inspiring lessons where we gain and learn a lot of knowledge in the teaching of listening
and speaking skills for primary students. With her guidance too, we manage to comprehend this
subject and have ample confidence to fulfill the tasks and requirements needed in this course. It
is indeed our honour and pleasure to be in her class. It is with her advice and encouragement ,
this coursework is accomplished.
Thank you.

JUSTIFICATIONS FOR SELECTING MATERIALS

A.THE ANIMAL SOUNDS SONG

This is a 2.24 minutes song which we think is interesting to listen to and

will be able to attract the primary school children to learn English in a fun and exciting way.
The melody of this song which is very catchy makes it fun to listen to and will easily followed by
the pupils. This is a reason why this song is selected to be as one of the listening and speaking
materials to be justified in this task. When a teacher intends to select materials for a listening
and speaking lesson , he has to ensure that the material he picks is interesting and able to
attract his pupils attention. By taking this criteria into account ,the teacher is actually motivating
the pupils to learn English in a fun and enjoyable way.
In selecting materials for listening and speaking lessons , a teacher needs to
reduce the pupils anxiety by choosing materials that suit the pupils ability and level of
proficiency. The content of this material suits the pupils ability and level of proficiency. The song
is sung in an average and comfortable speed for pupils to follow. This song can be used to
teach vocabulary and it is flexible to be used to teach the primary level from Year 3 to Year 6 for
all levels of pupils, from the weak to the good pupils , depending on how the teacher creates
the activities for the target group of pupils. The theme/topic for this song which is on animals , is
also familiar to the pupils environment as the pupils have some experience and knowledge
about animals.
This song is perfectly recorded with good pronunciation which will provide a
good model for students to imitate. The pupils will have an opportunity to listen to good
pronunciation of the lyrics while enjoying the song.
B. A POEM ENTITLED SICK

This is a poem entitled Sick which was recited in a poetry recitation

competition and uploaded in the internet. This poem is written by Shel Silverstein.
The main reason why this poem is chosen is because of the way it is written and also the way it
is recited. It is a funny poem which describe how a child gave reasons , one after another ,
telling that she was sick and was not able to attend school. It was funny in the end when the
child immediately stopped herself from thinking of her following reason , when she was told that
it was a Saturday , and she wanted to play. The interesting content of this poem is very close to
childrens life experience , which is , giving excuses for things that they dont like to do. So,
based on that point , we are sure that this poem will capture the pupils attention.
The topic that matches the content of this poem is Parts Of The Body and
we agreed that this poem is suitable to be used in teaching the Year 6 pupils under Unit 1,
Wonderfully Made .By listening to this poem , the pupils would be able to pick up many
vocabulary regarding the topic , Parts of The Body. When a teacher selects a listening and
speaking material , he must be aware that the content of the material he picks should be
interesting and provide a context for pupils to listen and to talk about. We agreed that this poem
has all the criteria needed. Moreover , the poem was recited with good pronunciation and
intonation by a child. Although the child was a little nervous when presenting the poem in the
competition , she managed to deliver it in an appropriate manner and with good pronunciation .
This poem is purposely picked as it was a piece of product of a child , probably of the same age
of our 12 years old pupils. We would like this poem to be an inspiration to our pupils that they
are also able to recite a poem . It is important for teachers to consider this as we have to
provide a good model for the students to imitate so that they will be able to imitate the good
sample of reading , where pronunciation , stress and intonation will be the target. After listening

to the poem, the pupils would practice reading it with correct pronunciation , stress and
intonation. The text of the poem would be provided to the pupils.

Sick by Shel Silverstein

I cannot go to school today,

Says little Peggy Ann Mackay.

I have the measles and the mumps ,

A gash , a rash and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet , my throat is dry ,
Im going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks ,
Ive counted sixteen chicken pox.
And theres one more thats seventeen ,
And dont you think my face looks green ?
My leg is cut and my eyes are blue ,
It might be instamatic flu.
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke ,
Im sure that my left leg is broke.
My hips hurt when I move my chin ,
My belly buttons caving in ,
My back is wrenched , my ankles sprained ,
My appendix pains each time it rains .
My nose is cold , my toes are numb ,
I have a sliver in my thumb.
My neck is stiff , my voice is weak ,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.
My elbows bent , my spine aint straight ,
My temperature is 108.
I have a hangnail , and my heart is what?
Whats that ? Whats that you say ?
You say today is Saturday ?
Goodbye , Im going out to play !

C. Jazz chant.

As for the third material which we choose for teaching listening and speaking skill

in the classroom is the jazz chant,. We believe that jazz chants are a unique way of linking the
rhythm of natural spoken language to the rhythm of music. Jazz chants are said to be
introduced by Carolyn Graham in order to help the pupils to develop the listening skills. So, we
are sure that jazz chants will be a great tool for listening and speaking activities. It is a wonderful
way to develop listening and speaking skills both for level one and two.
The main features of a jazz chants as opposed to a poem or rhyme is that there is no
poetic way or artificial change to the stress and intonation patterns of natural speech. We
found that jazz chants are also often take the form of an interchange or dialogue which display
the natural give and take of everyday spoken language , thus pupils will enjoy listening to the
rhyme and indirectly this will help the pupils in their listening skills.
Jazz chants can also be used effectively to practice vocabulary and as well as grammar
in the classroom. As we know that vocabulary and grammar are two main tools for the pupils to
have good understanding in English language, So, we can conclude that pupils will learn more
vocabularies and master their grammar skills through interesting jazz chants, like the jazz chant
which we have chosen , I get up at seven plays for 2 minutes .This jazz chant is actually
quite simple and we could use it for both levels. The vocabularies are simple and pupils will
have the opportunity to learn the simple tenses through this jazz chant. Pupils also will learn to
pronounce the words in correct intonation as the speakers in the jazz chant saying the words
clearly as the text is authentic too.
Teachers as well could come out with many interesting activities by using this jazz
chant, like Wh questions, teaching vocabulary, teaching grammar like tenses and so on. We
can say that the jazz chant which we have chosen is motivating, memorable and fun to apply in

the classroom. It also add variety to language practice because it provide lots of natural and
enjoyable repetition. The most important aspect is it improves all aspects of pronunciation as
well as build up pupils confidence and helps to create a sense of achievements. The criteria
which we must bare on mind before choosing the jazz chant is that the language must be useful
and appropriate to the pupils level. Pupils will indirectly master their pronunciation skills
through this listening and speaking activity through jazz chants. When we see the jazz chant, I
get up at seven, it reflects the common routine of a person in a day and we can surely ask the
pupils to change the timing accordingly to suit their lifestyles. It will also build up their thinking
skills, so, We can say that pupils will be impressed and motivated to learn when we apply this
jazz chant activity to the pupils because they will be curious to listen and involve in the activity.

D. A Storytelling entitled The Four Friends

One of the favorite materials that we use in teaching listening and

speaking skills the classroom is storytelling. Students can learn different stories at interactive
storytelling sessions held by natives teachers in and out of ordinary environment. My students
are sure to be inspired to learn English.
Children have an innate love for stories. Stories create magic and a sense
of wonder at the world. Stories can teach them about life, about people and cultures as well as
places they may like to visit. Through storytelling materials, teachers may use it as way for
students to develop an understanding, respect and appreciation for other cultures, and at the
same time promote inside a positive attitude to people from different lands, races and religion.
Using an animal as basic characters inside storytelling for example, can make learning process
more interesting to the students as the students especially at the primary levels are keen
towards the animal. Many times, the teacher used a storytelling about a bunch of popular animal
such as monkey, elephant and rabbit and relates the story which tells about good moral and
lesson.
The children will be attracted more to learn when animal are used as
characters in the storytelling. In my very own opinion, this way I considered viable and natural
because we all love animal since we are small. Moreover the characters of these animals are
normally presented in cartoon-like to make the whole learning process becomes much more
fun-wise.

Storytelling exercises the powerful muscle of the imagination, which is the

centre of every human being. When pupils listen to a story, we observe that they tend to be
more attentive. This is because when the teacher reads the story, the story is brought to life

using affirm characters and voice by the teacher. Theoretically, storytelling uses the left brains
function (a storyline, sequences of cause and effect) to speak the right brains language of
symbolic, intuitive, and imaginative truth. For example, the small bird sits on the shoulder of the
boy lost in the woods and tells him how to go home. The left brain says, I understand the
words, but bird dont speak. While the right brain says, What did the boy say back to the bird?
Naturally, the brain understands these impossible developments as facts. Thus storytelling
helps the pupils mind to integrate its two sides into a whole, which will promote health and selfrealization in them. This way stories will prepare the children for the challenges in life.
Last but not least, storytelling has helped me a lot, no matter we are
teaching level 1 or two. They are always eager to make their own sounds and move to
everybody. I feel that we teachers play a crucial role. We need to deliver the stories to generate
interest by them.

E. Cartoon.

We decided to choose a cartoon , Bunny Bug which is quite popular among the
children nowadays as part of our lesson in teaching listening and speaking because It is a 9

minutes show and it will be suitable to be used in an hour lesson . We. found that cartoons are
good source of attractions for the pupils. Basically, children either in level one or in level two
would be mesmerized while listening or watching the cartoons because pupils will be more
motivated to learn. The purpose we choose cartoon in our lesson is to attract pupils attention,
in order to convey our teaching skills . We also understood that, it is very important to select a
good cartoon, for teaching listening and speaking skills, for an example, there are quite a
variety of relatively good cartoons where we can apply in our lesson.
Besides, cartoons are appealing and could give a good impact on pupils,
like they could understand the language because basically the language are quite simple that
pupils in all levels could understand the content. Pupils will be also captured to learn because
cartoons are colourful and full of pleasure. We decided to use this authentic material in part of
our lesson to capture their attention, so that pupils will be motivated to learn and it might give a
good impact to the teaching of listening and speaking skill. Besides, the cartoon which we had
chosen, tells us a simple story that is easy to be followed by every pupil. It actually provides an
excellent opportunity to expose to the story while watching and listening

because it uses

ordinary childrens language. In fact, cartoons help the pupils to communicate and build up their
listening and speaking skills like teacher can create many interesting activities based on the
cartoons and pupils will be like entering a dream or a fantasy world. They could understand a
theme or the lesson taught by teacher from the cartoon easily.

F. Steps on how to make origami A heart

This listening and speaking tool which is an authentic source, is taken to

teach our listening and speaking skills for level two pupils. The CD lasts for 6 minutes , which
describes the steps on how to make a simple origami in a simple way. The boys voice is clear
and our pupils could understand the language quite well as it is easy to follow. Our main idea to
choose this steps on making an origami, is actually to emphasize the understanding skill of the
pupils after listening to the steps clearly and we want the weaker pupils to take part in the
process of making the origami , even by watching

it, as it will really help them better to

understand. The words been used are also quite simple and the pupils will be able to follow
them.
The instructions are clear and the pupils could follow the steps easily by
listening to the CD attentively. Besides, we can apply it to any of our lesson, like making a gift
on mothers day, fathers day or even teachers day. This application in our lesson , could create
a fun, exiting and pleasant environment to the pupils as they will actually involve in the activity
rather than just listening to the instructions. They will surely take part , and we believe that this
activity is also suitable to the weaker pupils as they will follow the steps by listening and
watching the video. So, this will help them to understand better and it will create a good
learning and teaching process.
Lastly, we considered this as an exiting activity because the pupils will not only
listen , but they will also involve themselves in the activity, like making a heart , (origami )

I personally feel glad to have the opportunity to take up this course and learning
this subject , TSL 3105 Teaching Listening and Speaking Skills in The ESL Primary Classroom. I
feel this way because it had contributed in transforming me into a better and more effective
English teacher . Taking this subject had rung a bell in my mind how authentic or non authentic
materials on listening and speaking , would cherish the teaching and learning process in school.
All these years , I am strongly tied with examination classes of Year 6 which actually focus on
examination skills , that I am realizing now , how much I have missed these fun activities of
teaching listening and speaking skills. Nevertheless , I have promised myself , despite of
chasing time to finish the syllabus and focusing on examination , I will have some authentic or
non authentic materials for my pupils in my lessons. I would find suitable interesting audio
materials on tape , CD or from the internet to allow my pupils to listen to a variety of different
voices apart from their own teacher. I believe it will bring positive impact and generate the
interest of learning English towards my pupils. According to Jeremy Harmer (2007 , page 304) ,
recorded materials give students an opportunity to meet a range of different characters ,
especially where real people are talking. I absolutely agree with him as we need to expose
them to various situations where English is spoken to communicate. So , I will put into my best
effort in giving the best to my pupils in school by providing good suitable listening and speaking
materials in my lessons so that my pupils will have the chance to listen to authentic materials
and notice the gap when they interact in a second language differs from the way the native
speakers do.
To fulfill this group assignment , I had done a lot of homework which firstly
required me to look for listening and speaking materials from various sources. To accomplish
the first task , I had found lots of listening and speaking materials within my reach , from my own
home to the school and library , to be used in teaching listening and speaking skill. I also did
some browsing through the internet to look for materials from a different source. My search for
the materials had resulted in I becoming more alert with what I actually posses around me , I
actually have numbers of materials that I can use in my lessons. I also learn and realize that we
can make a huge different in our lessons everyday just by having the right interesting teaching
materials for our lessons , provided that the materials chosen should suit the needs and
proficiency level of our pupils. Finally after undergoing quite stage of choosing, where I have

numbers of good materials to choose , I had chosen two materials to justify ,which I considered
suited best , a song on animals and a poem .
Next , we had a discussion on finalizing the materials that we would like to
justify. We also had a discussion on our justification points for the materials chosen . Going
through this process had made me realized that we are learning from each other and team work
is important in order to be successful. Here , I would like to thank my group members for all their
co operation and commitment in ensuring that this group work is successfully accomplished.
To our wonderful lecturer , Miss Norsidah Bt Moideen , thank you very much for
assisting us in this task. It is with your inspiring and lively lectures in class , guidance and
assistance , we are able to comprehend this task and accomplish it. We hope that our task is
successfully accomplished and meet to the evaluation criteria of the coursework.

I perceive myself as a poor student and reader. I had never been taught the proper way to write
an assignment. I struggled through TSL 3105. I never thought about the process that I took to
write the assignment. The readings throughout the data on teaching listening and speaking
skills helped me to understand how to write the task given. I really enjoyed most of the data
gathered from many sources. The internet and books are both great sources of information
which I was able to refer to when writing my assignment draft.

Through all the research that I did whether on the internet ,in the library ,or through my
colleague was helpful in understanding what I truly wanted my focus to write. I also realize that
the research open my eyes to information that I had never heard about or read before. I really
enjoyed most the reading that were assigned .I like the fact that we got to surf a website and
reading books. The information about how research online was extremely helpful.

The peer responses that I received were very helpful to me in correcting my paper. I tried to take
all the advice and apply it to my paper . Any information that they say would be helpful in
understanding my paper or that would make my paper better is worth using. Over all I was very
happy with my effort and my progress doing the assignment.

I feel that I will approach future writing assignments with an open mind , which I hope will take
some of the stress of the assignment. I know that I will be able to use this information not only
while I am in college , but throughout the rest of my life.

Reflection
My overall view of doing this assignment, I

gained more knowledge on teaching

listening and speaking activities and also ways and proper skills which I can use in teaching
listening and speaking for my pupils because my pupils are basically from rural area and
English is a tough language for them because they hardly speak or communicate in English. I
believe that by creating fun, exiting activities would be an encouragement for my pupils to learn
English Thus,. I also had a great time exploring the websites to gather more information and
also to understand better about the usage of concepts in teaching listening and speaking skills
for my pupils. I also learnt to develop the knowledge and skills of listening and speaking.
Besides, I also need to adopt appropriate and effective methods and strategies to teach the
skills to my pupils in the classrooms.
I have learnt that teachers should find ways to make teaching more fun and effective to
the students.. As an English teacher , I learnt some ways, concepts methods of teaching with
proper requirement to my pupils by doing this assignment. I believe that, I will be able to
understand the pupils well and could carry out the activities according to their ability . I also
learnt the meaning of the saying many hands make light work as all three of us worked
together to fulfill this assignment successfully.
Even though I faced a few obstacles while doing my task, such as lack of time, and
limited ideas, regardless all these, I could complete my task with the guidance of my lecturer,
course mates and working colleagues. I gained some good experience by doing this task. I also
got a clear picture of the secret of teaching listening and speaking skills as well as creating
many kinds of interesting activities for the pupils by collecting the authentic materials.
I got some references from a few books and websites

which

helped me while

completing the task within the due date. I also learnt to be more patience and more skill full in
doing my task.
