SONA SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT:
Aligning Management Education
with the Industry Standards
By Sudhakar Singh
A
ny seasoned executive will
tell you that, regardless of the
industry, the most important
skill any professional could
possess is the ability to effectively manage
resources. Skilled managers
are in
high demand. Consequently management
professionals with the right experience and
credentials are some of the highest paid
professionals in the world. As the global
business space continues to become more
complex, there is a greater demand that
business schools today offer specialized and
flexible programs to meet corporate
and student needs. Sona
School of
Management is one such business school
which helps students to develop
creativity, entrepreneurship and decision
making tools to be competitive in today's
rapidly changing corporate world. Sona
has been recognized as one of the top
B-Schools in India by Dalal Street B-School
Directory 2012.
Requirements of the industry
Management education plays a vital
role in today's business environment,
where everything changes so fast
that it becomes difficult for
organizations to survive
in the ever growing
competition. This
has led to the need

for business schools in developing nations
like India to impart relevant education to
students. Sona School of Management has
close association with Madras Management
Association, Confederation of Indian
Industry, National Entrepreneurship
network and Salem Productivity Council.
The institution gets their feedback and
finds out their requirements. The training
program of the institute facilitates
interaction with the industry and develops
the soft skills and leadership skills of
students. Such alignment with the industry
gives Sona an edge over other colleges. To
book a seat in this business school one needs
to fulfill certain eligibility conditions.
The first step towards fulfilling your
dream of becoming a master of business
administration is to clear a competitive
exam. If you have secured 60 percent
marks in your graduate degree, you can
sit for any of the exams like Common
Entrance Test (CET) or Tamil Nadu CET
(TANCET). For Management Quota,
students should write CET conducted by
Consortium of Self financing Engineering
Colleges association of Tamilnadu during
August every year. For Government quota,
students should write TANCET conducted
by Anna University, Chennai. Students are
selected through single window counseling
conducted by Anna University. The campus
of Sona then welcomes the successful
candidates to be a part of the learning
environment.
Role of infrastructure
Harboring good infrastructure is absolutely
necessary for converting the human
resources into human capital. Sona School
of Management provides its students
with all the required infrastructure
facilities. The institute has state-of-the-
art air-conditioned class rooms with LCD
projector, AC conference halls and seminar
halls with audio-visual aids along with
24hrs Hi-Speed internet facility. The school
also boasts to have a catalogue of
3000+ e-journals. The Central
Library at SSM has a collection of
over 79718 documents covering all
disciplines. It includes books, back
volumes, standards, atlases,
audio/video cassettes,
CD-ROMs. The
Central Library
receives 180
journals; Indian
and Foreign.
The library

Management software package for library
housekeeping. It keeps a database of books
and periodicals. Using Autolib OPAC (On-
line Public Access Catalogue), one can
search the on-line catalogue by authors

Central Library is a member of American
Information Resource Center (AIRC).
This gives you access to books and resource
material not available on the campus
library. The state-of-the-art library allows
students to expand their knowledge base
beyond textbooks and notes taken in class.
With the online journals and e-catalogues
students can not only learn about the
confluence of different disciplines but also
be in sync with what is being taught around
the world. This gives them a competitive
edge that can only be achieved with a

ignesh A. an alumni of Sri Venkateshwara College of Engineerings (SVCE) is today celebrating his first successful
year of working at one of the largest
multinational companies in India. But the
happy smile on his face is also because of
the appreciation and responsibilities that
he has been entrusted with in the short
span of time. I never believed that I had
the capability to outshine my colleagues
and earn laurels so early in my career. But
the time I spent at SVCE, has transformed
an average student like me into a well
rounded industry professional. I only
have my college to thank for my success,
says Vignesh with a smile. Vignesh was not always this confident
and focused. When he had first joined
SVCE, he was a reserved, average
student who did not expect much from
his life. Same is the case with several
other students who are not aware of their talent. All they require is an institution like SVCE that can bring out

the best in everyone and give them a
fair chance to succeed at their chosen
career. It is the guidance of the institute
that keeps them on the right path and
allows them to excel in their chosen
disciplines. We see several students who
are unaware of their hidden talents.
From day one we engage them in
several activities that help them hone
their talent and realize their hidden
potential. We do this to make these
students industry ready, says Professor
Muthukumaran Sivanandham,
Principal, SVCE. The results show the
benefit of SVCEs unique approach
as about 96 percent of the eligible
students from the 2009-13 batch have
been placed in over 95 companies. The
highest pay offered was Rs.12 lakhs
by ebay/Paypal Ltd and the average
package offered is Rs.3.75 lakhs per
annum. Companies that recruited from SVCE include industry leaders such as Ernest & Young, Mu Sigma, A R A I ,
Parker Hanniffin, Saint Gobain, TATA
Motors, NOKIA, Cummins Ltd.,
TITAN, L&T., Ashok Leyland, and
Renault Nissan among others. I feel that our job does not end
just with teaching. When we admit
a student into the curriculum we
ensure that he/she walks out with a
bright future in hand, says a proud
Sivanandham.
Guiding you till the next Transit In this age of contention, firms just
do not simply go by the marks attained
by the applicant. They expect their
prospective employees to have an all-
round personality average students
who can communicate well, take up
challenges, lead a team, complete
tasks in given time are preferred
over a student with an exemplary
classroom record and poor social
skills, says Sivanandham. At SVCE
learners are provided with strong
fundamentals and expertise in their
chosen field, and motivated to involve
actively in department associations,
societies and clubs like NSS, NCC, Leo,
Speakers Forum, which expose them
to real-life situations that help them in
improving their inter-personal skills.
In other words, they assist them to
evolve as industry-ready engineers. The questions asked during my
job interview were relatively simple
for me, not only because I was
prepared for them but simply because
I had faced most of the situational
references that they made; through the
various activities that I participated in
during my course, admits Vignesh. To guide students decide their
