Two Antipodes in the Priest Mantles
Summary
Until the beginning of the World War II in Yugoslavia Momcilo Djujic and
Vasilije Surlan had in their biographies moments that revealed their unfitting in the
church organization, its general legitimate order and structure. Both were fighting
against bureaucracy often manifested in the ranks of church institutions. Momcilo
Djujic, socially active, impulsive, showed a romantic enthusiasm and appearance
already with the publication of collections of love poems, published by Serbian
monastery printing in 1931. Vasilije Surlan was another type of man, who fighting
for his career showed a pronounced vanity, ambitious instincts, and he was convicted
by the higher church authorities.
The great earthquake, state collapse, general catastrophe of the Serbian nation
in the World War II aimed their political action in different directions. Momcilo
Djujic, according to the Serbian history constant, turned into a priest-warrior from
Tromedja in difficult circumstances of Ustasha rule and Vasilije Surlan tried to keep
his priest position under the shelter of non-canonical Croatian Orthodox Church.
Strmica priest remained recorded in the epic legends and collective memory as a
national savior, while Vasilije Surlan with betrayal steps went into heretic rejection
from the Orthodox religion and the Serbian nation.
