THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE APPLICATION OF EXTENSIVE

READING ON ENGLISH ACQUISITION AT THE EIGHTH GRADE

STUDENTS OF MTsN MODEL CIGUGUR KUNINGAN

A. The Background of the Problem
s
B. The Identification of the Problem
1. The Research Area
This thesis which is entitled the correlation between the application of
extensive reading on English acquisition at the eighth grade MTsN
MODEL Kuningan tries to make students are able to develop their
English acquisition.
2. The kinds of the problem
There are many problems in English, especially about English Acquisition
and Reading skill. The writer would like to mention the kinds of the
problems in this thesis:
a. Students are not motivated in reading text.
b. The students havent known their ability in acquiring English.
c. The students seldom read any text.
d. The students are not able to response oral communication.
3. The main of the problem
The main of the problems in this research is the students are lack of
Reading English text.
C. The Limitation of the Problem
One of the problems in English is Reading skill. Students can not
speak English correctly, grammatically, and formally. In this thesis, the writer
has decided to limit the topic only talking about the correlation between the
application of extensive reading on English acquisition at the eighth grade
students of MTsN MODEL Kuningan. In this research, the writer would
focus on the students capability on English acquisition by applying the
extensive reading.
D. The Questions of the Research
Based on the reason above, the writer has tried to give close attention
to know:
1. Do the students have good response of the application of extensive
reading?
2. Do the students have good capability on English acquisition ?
3. Is there any positive and significant correlation between the application
of extensive reading on English acquisition?
E. The Aims of the Research
1. To know the response of the application of extensive reading.
2. To know the students capability on English acquisition.
3. To know the correlation between the application of extensive reading on
English acquisition.
F. The Uses of the Research
There are the uses of this research:
1. Through the application of extensive reading, the students are expected to
be able to motivated in reading any text, thus the students can improve
their ability in their daily activities.
2. To find out a good way of improving students capability on English
acquisition
3. To find out how the teacher of English uses methodology of teaching in
learning reading skill at school.
4. The research can be a reference for the next research.
G. The Frame of Thinking
According to the writers opinion, reading is one of the ways of
acquiring a language, especially in learning English. Reading is the third step
of mastering a language after Listening Speaking and before writing. Ying
states that reading is the process of recognition, interpretation and perception
of written or printed material. Every written or printed material has its own
messages to be conveyed to the readers. It is communicative act between a
writer and reader.
Reading can be divided into two, namely loud and silently. Reading
silently can be grouped into two more, namely the extensive and intensive
reading. The writer will focus on the extensive reading only.
In Dictionary of Reading (1983:112) noted extensive reading is a
reading program that is widely done. The students are given the freedom and
flexibility in terms of having both the type and scope of the reading materials
they read. Extensive reading program is very beneficial in providing a wide
variety of experience to the students who follow it.
H. The Hypothesis of the Research
The writer conducted the research with the hypothesis that there is
positive and significant correlation between the application of extensive
reading on English acquisition at the eighth grade MTsN Model Cigugur
Kuningan.
I. The Methodology of the Research
1. The objective of the Research
The objective of the research is to find out the correlation between the
application of extensive reading on English acquisition.
2. The Place and Time of the Research
The place of the researcher is MTsN Model Cigugur Kuningan. It is
located at jl. Mayasih Kec. Cigugur Kab. Kuningan.
The researcher chooses the eighth class students of MTsN Model Cigugur.
The research will be begun on March 24
th
until April 26
th
2014.
3. The Method of the Research
The method of research is quantitative. It means that the researcher
conducts the research by using formula of statistic, especially by using the
formula of product moment correlation by Pearson.
4. The variables of the Research
The variables of the research
X Variable : The application of extensive reading
Y Variable : The English acquisition of the students
5. The population and Sample
a. Population
The population of the research is in the third grade students of MTsN
Model Cigugur. The second grade of MTsN Model Cigugur consists of
4 classes, those are class 8.1 up to 8.4. Each class consists of 40
students, so the total number of population comes to 160 students.
b. Sample
From the population above, the writer took class 8.4 as the sample.
There are 40 students in that class. So, the writer took for 8 percent of
comes to students. The technique used taking sample by using simple
random in class 8.4.
6. The Technique of Collecting Data
a. Observation
Observation is a method in which the scientist test the hypotheses by
observing people as the engage in everyday activities in their natural
habits. So in this case the writer notices and observes the process of
teaching and learning English in the classroom carried out by the
teacher and students.
b. Test
Test (oral, written, short, answer, essay, etc) and other measurement
such as the observation and questionnaire mean as certain result being
achieved and progress being mad towards objectives of language
learning.
c. Questionnaire
7. The technique of analysis Data
- Quantitative
The writer will analyze this data based on the result. The data will
analyze using a quantitative approach through the product moment.
For the validity, the writer uses the product moment correlation as
follow:

Rxy =
()()
*

(

)+*

()

+

Rxy = correlation coefficient t
X = the number of X score
Y = the number of Y score
XY = the result of the number X and Y

Then, the quantitative category can be known from this following:
0,80 < rxy 1,00 very high correlation
0,60 < rxy 0,80 high correlation
0,40 < rxy 0,60 medium correlation
0,20 < rxy 0,40 low correlation
Rxy 1,00 very low correlation
