111, Fall 2014: Homework 2

This homework is due at the beginning of lecture on Friday, September 19, 2014. You are free to talk
with each other and get help. However, you should write up your own answers and understand every-
thing you write. You must show ALL YOUR WORK in order to receive credit. ANSWERS WITHOUT
APPROPRIATE JUSTIFICATION WILL RECEIVE NO CREDIT.
Problem 1. MBB, Exercise 2.24, page 69. You should do all ve parts of the problem; for part (a), you
can generate the histograms by hand or by using R; either method is ne.
Problem 2. MBB, Exercises 4.1 and 4.2, page 130.
Problem 3. MBB, Exercise 4.13, page 132.
Problem 4. Let be the sample space corresponding to three tosses of a coin. Give a verbal description
of the following events:
a) A = {HHH, HHT, HTH, HTT};
b) B = {HHH, HHT, HTH, THH};
Problem 5. (Probability, sample spaces, events) Suppose two four-sided dice (which are known as tetrahedral
dice and whose faces are marked with the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively) are rolled simultaneously and
the number on each of the upper faces is recorded. Assume all possible outcomes of the two upper faces are
equally likely. Find the probabilities of the following events:
a) the maximum of the two numbers rolled is less than or equal to 2;
b) the maximum of the two numbers rolled is less than or equal to 3;
c) the maximum of the two numbers rolled is equal to 3;
d) Repeat part c for the maximum equal to 1, 2, and 4.
e) If M is the maximum of the two numbers, then
P(M = 1) +P(M = 2) +P(M = 3) +P(M = 4) = 1,
check that your answers for c) and d) satisfy this relationship.
Problem 6. MBB, Exercises 4.40 (omit (e) and (f)), and 4.41, page 149.
Problem 7. MBB, Exercise 4.43, page 150, part (a) only.
Problem 8. A survey of a groups commuting habits last year revealed the following
a) 27% drove a car
b) 29% rode the Metro
c) 14% rode a city bus
1
d) 9% took both the Metro and the bus
e) 8% drove a car and rode the Metro
f) 10% drove a car and rode a city a bus
g) 5% used all three forms of transportation
Calculate the percentage of commuters who used none of these forms of transportation to get to work.
Problem 9. , Rosner, Exercises 3.1, 3.2, 3.3. 3.4, and 3.6: Consider a family with a mother, father, and two
children. Let A
1
= { Mother has inuenza}, A
2
= {Father has inuenza}, A
3
= { First child has inuenza},
and A
4
= { Second child has inuenza}. Let B be the event B = { At least one child has inuenza},
C = { At least one parent has inuenza}, and D = {at least one person in the family has inuenza}.
a) Are A
3
and A
4
mutually exclusive? That is, is it true that
A
3
A
4
= ?
b) What does A
1
A
2
represent? How about A
1
A
2
?
c) Express C in terms of A
1
, A
2
, A
3
and A
4

d) Express D in terms of B and C.
