OverviewofQuickStartSteps
ThisguidewillquicklygetyouupandrunningwiththeXirrusManagement
System(XMS).ItincludesinstructionsforsettinguptheXMSserverand
adviceforgettingstartedwithXMSondedicatedXirrusserverappliances.
TheXM-3320/3340/3360SeriesManagementAppliancesarededicated
Linux-basednetworkappliancesthatcomewithXMSserversoftwarepre-
installedandreadytostartautomatically.

1. ToaccesstheWebClient,setyourbrowsersURLtotheserver
machineshost/domainnameorIPaddress,followedbya:9090.
TostarttheWebClientusinganIPaddress,notethattheserver
getsanIPaddressfromDHCPbydefault.IfDHCPisnotused,
thenthefactorydefaultIPaddressofEthernet0is10.0.2.10;
Ethernet1is10.0.2.11.Forexample,starttheWebClienton
Ethernet1byenteringhttp://10.0.2.11:9090inyourbrowser.
TodeterminetheserversIPaddressviatheserialCONSOLEport
usingCLI,thesettingsare:115,200bps,1stopbit,8databits,
noflowcontrol,noparity.LogintoCLIusingadmin/admin.
Typeshow iptoviewtheIPaddressesassignedtoeachport.
FormoredetailsondeterminingtheIPaddressorconnectingvia
theconsoleport,pleaseseetheQuickInstallGuidesuppliedwith
theserver.
2. Whenthesplashpageappears,clickWeb Client onthelowerright.
3. Loginusingadmin/admin,thenclickSettings onthetopright.The
Statuspageappears,showingasummaryofserverstatus.
Note: YoumayuseCLItomanagetheXMSserver.Accessitatport
2022andloginusingadmin/admin.Donotuseport22.
IfXMSisnotrunningproperly,youmayclicktheRestartApplicationbut-
tononthelowerlefttorestarttheXMSserversoftware.Iftheserveris
currentlyrunning,anorderlyshutdownwillbeperformedfirst.
TheRebootAppliancebuttonwillreboottheManagementAppliance
thiswillshutdownXMSrelatedprocessesinanorderlymannerbefore
rebooting.Rebootingandrestartingwilltakeabouttwominutesona
newManagementAppliance.AsXMSisusedandthedatabasegrows,
startupintegritycheckswilltakelonger.(Forshutdown,seepage16.)

NetworkSettings
1. SelecttheNetworklinkonthelefttodisplaytheNetworkSettings
window.(Figure2)
Note: YoumayuseoneorbothoftheXMSManagement
AppliancesEthernetports.Ifusingboth,thenoneoftheportsis
typicallyreservedformanagement.
2. WerecommendthatyouassignastaticIPaddresstoeachEther-
netportthatisconnected.TheApplianceusesDHCPbydefault.If
youhaveconfiguredreservedleasesfortheportsinyourDHCP
server,skiptoStep3below.IfyouleavetheDNSfieldsonthis
pageblankandyouareusingDHCP,thenthegatewayandDNS
serversconfiguredinyourDHCPserverwillbeused.
IfyouhavenotassignedareservedDHCPleasetotheAppliance,
clicktheStaticradiobuttonunderNetworkInterfacesforeach
Ethernetportthatyouareusing.MakesurethatEnableInterfaceis
settoYes,andentertheIPAddressandSubnetMask.Under
GeneralNetworkSettings,entertheDefaultGatewayAddressand
theDNSDomainandDNSServers.

3. TheDNSHostnameoftheApplianceissettoxirrus-xmsbydefault.
Xirrusdevices(ArraysandPoGEinjectors)sendtrapstothehost-
namexirrus-xmstoannouncetheirpresenceonthenetworkand
speeddiscovery.Thus,ifyouchangetheAppliancesDNSHost-
name,youshouldcreateanaliasinyournetworksDNSserverto
ensurethattheApplianceisaccessibleusingboththename
xirrus-xmsandyournewname.
Date/TimeSettings
1. SelecttheDate&Timelinkontheleft.
2. SelectyourTimeZone.EnableAutoAdjustDaylightSavingsby
clickingYes.
3. WerecommendenablingUseNetworkTimeProtocol(thisisthe
default).TouseSNMPv3successfully,systemtimemustbeset
usinganNTPserveronboththeXMSserverhostmachineandall
ArraysusingSNMPv3.YoumaymodifytheNTPServers(primary,
secondary,tertiary),orleavethematthedefaultvalueswhichuse
NTPPooltimeservers(http://www.pool.ntp.org/).
4. IfyoudisableUseNetworkTimeProtocol,setthecorrecttimeand
dateintheappropriatefields.

EnterthesettingsnecessarytohaveXMSuseSNMPtofindArraysand
PoGEinjectorsonyourWi-Finetworkinthesubnetsthatyouspecify.
(Figure3)Nonetworksaresearchedbydefault,soyoumustaddthem.

thestringsbeingusedbyyourArrays,clickSNMPv2Settingsor

SNMPv3Users.ForXMStodiscoverandmanageadevice,the
devicemusthaveSNMPv2and/orv3enabled.Thedevices
SNMPv2communitystringorSNMPv3read-writeauthentication
settingsmustmatchoneofthosedefinedherefordiscovery.
ThedefaultSNMPv2communityname(xirrus)allowsXMSto
discovernewArraysthatstillhavedefaultSNMPsettings(SNMPv2
isenabledwithitsReadWriteCommunityStringsettoxirrus).Also,
eachArraysTrapHost1IPAddressissettohostnameXirrus-XMS
bydefault(forthePhoneHomefeature).ConfiguringanArrayto
bemanagedwithXMSonpage9describessettingupSNMPon
theArrayforfullfunctionalitywithXMS.
3. Toaddnetworkstobesearchedfordevices,clickAddNetworkson
theleft.Whenthepageappears,clicktheAddNetworkbuttonon
theupperleft.IntheAddNewNetworkdialogbox,enterthesub-
netsNetworkAddressandSubnetMask.SelectStartDiscoveryto
initiatediscovery,thenclickOK.Discoverybeginssoonafteradd-
inganetwork.Becarefultospecifythesubnetaccurately,toavoid
creatingexcesstrafficbysearchinganoverlylargenetwork.
ToaddindividualArraysormanagement-capablePoGEinjectors,
usetheAddDeviceslinkontheleftinstead.

EventsandSyslog
UsingtheJavaClient,vieweventsbyselectingMonitor>Events.View
theSyslogbyselectingSyslogfromtheToolsmenubaritem.Eventsare
detectedbyXMS;SyslogshowsmessagessentbyArrays.Thuseach
ArraymustbeconfiguredtousetheXMSserverasitsSyslogserver
(Step8).Tosearchforevents,usetheSearchbutton. Double-click
arow(EventsorSyslog)toseedetails.
Emailnotifications
Tobenotifiedviaemailwhenaneventoralarmofaparticularseverity
occurs,usetheJavaClient.SelectEdit>Notificationswhileviewingan
EventorAlarmwindow.Specifytheseveritythatwilltriggeranemail.
STEP7 StartingtheXMSJava(User)Client
1. Tostarttheclientforthefirsttime,setyourbrowsersURLtothe
XMSservermachinesIPaddressorhost/domainname,followed
bya:9090.Forexample,http://192.168.10.40:9090.Whenthe
splashpageappears,clickJavaClient.Thisdownloadsandstarts
theXMSJavaClient,andputsashortcutonyourdesktopthatyou
mayusetoquicklystarttheclientinthefuture.

2. Logintotheclient(thefactorydefaultforbothfieldsisadmin).
Inafewmomentstheclientappears.ItdisplaystheDashboard,
providinganat-a-glanceoverviewofallsystemstatusandactivity.
3. Thefirsttimeyoustarttheclient,XMSasksyoutoentertheserver
license.Untilthelicenseisinstalled,theserverrunsinadefault
modethatallowsittodiscoverandmanageonlyfourArrays.Xirrus
willsupplyyouwithaLicenseKeyandSerialNumberforyour
server.Enterbothofthesefieldsexactlyastheywereprovidedto
you(thefieldsarenotcase-sensitive),andclickApply.
Note: ThelicensespecifiesamaximumnumberofArraystobe
managed.TomanageadditionalArrays,pleasecontactXirrusfora
licenseupgrade.
STEP8 ConfiguringOneArrayorMultipleArrays
UsetheXMSJavaClientortheWebManagementInterface(WMI)to
setupanArray.ThenusepoliciestoapplyallorpartsofthatArrays
configurationtoasmanyotherArraysasyoulike.TomanageArray
licenses,seepage11.
ConfiguringasingleArraytouseasamodelforotherArrays
TouseXMS,right-clicktheArrayintheResources>Arrayswindow
andusetheConfigureoptionforeachfeaturetobeconfigured.
TouseWMI,right-clickanArrayintheResources>Arrayswindow,
andselectWebManagement.
ConfiguringanArraytobemanagedwithXMS
XMSusesSNMPtomanagetheWi-Finetwork.SNMPv2isenabledon
Arraysbydefaultwiththecommunitystringxirrus;SNMPv3isenabled
bydefaultwiththeusernameandpasswordxirrus-rw.IfXMScantdis-
coveranArray,usetheArraysWMItochecktheSNMPstringsandthe
followingsettings:
TosendtrapstotheXMSserver,useServices>SNMP.SetSend
AuthFailureTrapsandsetoneormoreSNMPTrapHost/Port(s).
TheArrayusesthedefaulttraphostXirrus-XMStophonehome

AfterXMShasdiscoveredanArray,performthefollowingstepsinXMS
(tousepolicies,seebelow):
Forincreasedsecurity,westronglyrecommendreplacingthe
ArraysSNMPdefaultsbyenteringyourownSNMPv3usernames
andpasswordsand/orSNMPv2communitystrings.Makethis
changeontheArraybycreatingandexecutingaManagement
ControlpolicywiththedesiredSNMPsettings.Youmustaddthese
stringstoXMSfordevicemanagement(page5).
Right-clicktheArrayintheResources>Arrayswindowandselect
Configure>SystemInformation.SetHostNametoallowtheArray
tobemoreeasilyidentifiedinXMS.
TosendSyslogmessagestoXMS,createandexecuteaServices
policywiththedesiredSystemLogsettings.Enabletheserver,
entertheXMSserversIPAddress,andsettheLevelhighenough
soyouwontreceiveexcessiveinformationalmessages.
UsingpoliciesandArraygroupsforeaseofmanagement
UsepoliciestoapplyauniformconfigurationtomultipleArraysatonce.
Createpolicieseasilybyreadingtheconfigurationofaproperlysetup
(model)Array.Thereareanumberofpolicytypes.SeethePolicies
chapterintheXMSUsersGuidefordetailedinformation.
Note: WhenapolicyisappliedtoanArray,itdefinestheentire
configurationofafeatureanypre-existingconfigurationisreplacedby
thepolicy.Tomodifyafeaturesconfigurationratherthanreplacingit,
seeConfiguringasingleArraytouseasamodelforotherArrays.
To create policies from a model Array, right-click that Array in the
Resources>Arrays window and select Create Policies from Array.
Selectthepolicytypestocreatefromthemodel,clickGlobaltocreatea
policythatincludesalloftheselectedpolicies,andclickCreate.
Note: WestronglyrecommendcreatingpoliciesfrommodelArrays.
Advancedusersmaycreatepoliciesmanually(page11).
To create a policy manually, expand Configuration> Policies in the tree.
Clickthedesiredpolicytype.XMSdisplaysexistingpolicies(Figure5).
ClickAddPolicy,andenterthenewpolicy.Somepolicieswillallowyou
tospecifyalistofvalues,forexample,creatingmultipleIPaddress
poolsforaDHCPServerpolicy.Toenteralistvalue,click+.
To use a policy, click the Execute column for that policy in the Policy
List. AdialogallowsyoutochooseoneormoreArraysonwhichtoexe-
cutethepolicy.TheTaskResultswindowshowstheexecutionresults.

CreateGlobalPolicieswithamasterconfiguration.Youmayhave
createdanumberofpoliciesforeachpolicytypeaGlobalPolicy
letsyouselectadesiredpolicyofeachtype,andapplytheselected
settoArraysallatonceratherthanapplyingonepolicyatatime.
CreateArrayGroupstoapplypoliciestoagroupofArraysatonce.
SelectConfiguration>Groups(nearthetreesbottom),thenclick

TheWebClientcanapplybulklicensesinonestep,byreadinginthe
ExcellicensefileissuedbyXirrus.Youcanviewlicensinginformation
foryourArraysandmanageindividuallicenses.
To manage licenses, click Configure at the top of the Web Client and
then click Licenses.UsetheAddbuttontoaddindividuallicenses,or
clickImporttoreadalicensefile.TheExportbuttonexportslicensestoa

To create a new map, select Resources>Locations from the Tree, then
click (Add Map) on the tool bar. EnteraMapName,clicktheTrans-
ferimagebutton andbrowsetoselecttheimagefile.Thefilename
mustnotcontainspaces.ClickUpload.ThefileisuploadedtotheXMS
server.Toaddamapwiththisbackground,clickthebuttontotherightof
BackgroundImagetoselecttheuploadedimagefile.Selectfeetor
metersforyourDisplayUnitsandclickOK.

To add an Array to the map, select it in the Arrays List on the map win-
dow. (Figure8)Clickagainanddraganddropitinthedesiredposition
onthemap.AnArraymayonlybeplacedononemap.
To orient an Array, click the Rotate Array tool. ClicktheArray,
thenclicktheredlineanddragitsothatitshowstheactualorientationof
theabg(n)2radio.
To select an Array on a map, click the Move Array tool. Thenclick
the Array. You may now:
DraganArraytomoveitslocationonthemap.
Right-clicktheArrayiconforamenuofoptions.Array Status is
veryuseful,displayingasummaryofArraystatusandsettings.
SeeStep5formoreArraymanagementoptions.SeeWorkingwith
MapsintheXMSUsersGuideformoreinfoonmaps.
RemembertoclicktheSaveMapbuttonwhendone.Somemap
operationsarenotavailableuntilpreviousmapchangeshavebeen
saved.
Beforedoingextensiveworkwiththemap,youshouldEditEnvironment
Settings forthetypeofconstructionatyoursite.Thenyoumayuse
theLocationfeaturetodisplaythelocationofstationsassociatedto
Arraysonthemap:intheResources>Stationswindow,right-clicka
stationandselectLocate.NotethatthisfeaturerequiresArraystobe
runningArrayOSrelease5.0orlater.
Ifyoucreatemultiplemaps,theyrearranged
hierarchically.Anewmapisaddedtothe
MapListunderthecurrentlyselectedmap.
To set the map scale, click the Calibrate Dis-
tance button. Pointthemousetoanend
ofawallthatyouvephysicallymeasured.
Clickanddragthemousetotheendofthe
wall.EnteryourmeasuredActualDistancein
thedialogboxandclickOK.
To work with the map, save it and then
click the Move Array tool. Thismode
allowsyoutoaddArraysandeditthemap.

thetopoftheWebClientwindowtodisplaytheMyReportspage,which
listsallthereportsyouhavecreatedandallowsyoutoViewthelatestor

SchedulingDatabaseBackups
1. IntheWebClientSettingswindow(Figure1)clicktheBackuplink.
ToschedulebackupsfromtheJavaClient,selectAdmin>Backup
Managerfromthemenu.Ineithercase,proceedtothenextstep.
2. Specifythelocationwherebackupsaretobesavedtheymustbe
savedtoaremotehost,andnotontheManagementAppliance
itself.EntertheDomainnameandspecifyaPathtothedirectoryto
beusedforbackups:
(UNCformat)\\servername\share
(SMBformat)smb://servername/share
Enterlogininformationfortheremotehost,andthenbesuretoclick
SaveLocation.
3. IntheScheduleBackupsection,enteraBackupName,andselect
BackupNowtobackupimmediately,orselectScheduleBackup.
4. IfyouselectScheduleBackup,fieldswillappearforspecifying
whenbackupsaretorun.Selectoneormoredaysoftheweek,and
entertheTimeofDayforrunningbackups.ClicktheSchedule
Backupbuttonatthebottom.Yournewentrywillappearinthelist.
5. Toseethebackupsthathavebeenperformed,clickViewBackups
intheRestoreBackupssectionatthebottomofthewindow.
Reviewthisperiodicallytomakesurethatbackupshavebeenper-
formedsuccessfully.Deletebackupswhentheyarenolonger
needed,toconservediskspace.

ShuttingdowntheXMSServer
Shuttingdowntheserverincorrectlycancauseproblemsthenexttime
youstartXMS.Usethefollowingprocedure:
1. Closeallclients.YoumayuseAdmin>BroadcastMessageinthe
JavaClienttoalertusersfirst.
2. IntheWebClientStatuswindow(Figure1)clicktheShutdown
Applicationbutton.
3. TheManagementAppliancewillthengracefullyshutdown.Acon-
firmationnoticeisdisplayedimmediatelywhentheshutdownpro-
cessisinitiated.ItmaytakeafewminutesfortheApplianceto
actuallyshutdownandpoweritselfoff.
