This seminar is re0uired 1or all doctoral students in the History,Theory
option o1 the 2h+3+ pro%ram in Landscape Architecture and
Architecture and is open to Masters4 students 5ith the appro6al o1 the
instructor+ 7nrolled students should ha6e sur6ey le6el 8no5led%e o1
art history and architectural and landscape history+
Seminar Goals:
$raduate methods seminars are meant to introduce ne5 scholars to
the culture and con6entions o1 a %i6en 9eld+ The e:pectation is not
that you 5ill unthin8in%ly a#sor# the recei6ed 5isdoms o1 those 5ho
ha6e come #e1ore you+ Rather; #ecomin% more 8no5led%ea#le a#out
the historio%raphy o1 architectural and landscape history is a
prere0uisite to your thin8in% critically and ima%inati6ely a#out your
o5n possi#le contri#utions to the 9eld; perhaps e6en a#out the 5ays
you mi%ht challen%e the 9eld+ <ne o1 our %oals 1or the semester;
then; is to pro6ide you 5ith enou%h o1 an orientation to the history
and current state o1 architectural and landscape history that you can
na6i%ate 5ithin the 9eld 5ith con9dence and sel1.a5areness+
A second %oal is more practical+ y the end o1 the semester you
should ha6e an e:panded repertoire o1 s8ills 1or actually doin%
architectural and landscape history+ =3oin% history> includes

Course Requirements:

read a little and discuss it 6ery 5ell; rather than read a lot and not
ha6e time to discuss it thorou%hly+ That said; the readin%s are

that you read conscientiously and care1ully+ 2lease come to each class
1ully prepared to en%a%e in critical; thou%ht1ul discussion+
