Bactericidal action
against sensitive
organisms; inhibits
synthesis of bacterial
cell wall, causing cell
death.

Treatment of
infections caused by
susceptible strains of
Shigella, Salmonella,
S. Typhosa, E.coli,
Haemophilus
influenza, proteus
mirabilis, neisseria
gonorrhoeae,
enterococci, gram
positive organisms

Meningitis caused by
Neisseria
meningitides

Unlabeled use:
Prophylaxis in
ceasarian section in
certain high risk
patients

Contraindicated with
allergies to penicillin,
cephalosporins, or
other allergens

Use cautiously with
renal disorders.

CNS: Lethargy,
Hallucinations,
seizures
CV: Heart failure
GI:Glossitis,
stomatitis, gastritis,
sore mouth, furry
tongue, black hairy
tongue, nausea,
vomiting, diarrhea,
abdominal pain,
bloody diarrhea,
entercolitis,
pseudomembranous
colitis, nonspecific
hepatitis
GU: Nephritis
Hematologic: Anemia,
thrombocytopenia,
leucopenia,
neutropenia,
prolonged bleeding
time
Others:
Superinfections- oral
and rectal moniliasis,
vaginitis

-culture infected area
before treatment;
reculture area if
response is not
expected
-check IV site
carefully for signs of
thrombosis or drug
reaction
-do not give IM
injections in the same
site, atrophy can
occur
-administer oral drug
on an empty
stomach, 1hr before
or 2 hrs after meal
with full glass of
water.

clock
-take full course of
therapy

Hypersensitivity
Allergy to
acetaminophen
Drowsiness,
Nausea and vomiting,
Abdominal pain,
Hepatotoxicity,
Leucopenia,
Neutropenia,
Hemolytic anemia
(long term use)
Thrombocytopenia,
Pancytopenia, rash,
urticaria,
Hypersensitivity,
Cyanosis, anemia,
Jaundice, CNS,
stimulation, delirium
followed by vascular
collaps, convulsions,
coma, death
Assess patients fever
or pain: typeof pain,
location, intensity,
duration,
temperature, and
diaphoresis.

Assess allergic
reactions: rash,
urticaria; if these
occur, drug may have
to be discontinued.

Teach patient to
recognize signs of
chronic overdose:
bleeding, bruising,
malaise, fever, sore
throat.

Tell patient to notify
prescriber for pain/
fever lasting for more
than 3 days.
