MODERN TRENDS IN CURRICULUM CONSTRUCTION

INTRODUCTION
The National Science Foundation was founded in 1950 in USA with a view
to develop a national policy for the promotion of basic research and science
education. After the launching of sputnik by Russians, American nation alerted
about the deficiencies in their science education. They began to innovate science
education at all phase of education. A commission on science Education. They
began to innovate science education was established by the American Association
for the Advancement of science to explore new approaches for teaching science.
The two important approaches are,
i)

Physical science study committee Project (PSSC)

ii)

Chemical Education material study

(CHEM Study).

1.

PSSC
Physical science study committee project was started at the Massachusetts

Institute of technology USA in 1956.The study material was developed with the
support the national science foundation and foundation. The PSSC was really
meant improve physics teaching at school level. PSSC encourages the spirit of
enquiring through laboratory experimentation Practical works can be considered
as the core of the course and pupils are expected to discovers principles of physics
by threshes .PSSC course has be affixed as an after native to the traditional physics
course because more emphasis is placed an modern physics. PSSC base
several objectives .Important objectives are,
To develop s to observe nature closely and interrogate it, thus learning
net only the laws and principles of physics but the evidence on which they
are based.
4

To present physics as a unified but even changing subject.

To demonstrate the inter play between experiment

and theory in the

development of physics
To lead student to recapitulate the process by which knowledge is gained.
To extend the capacity of students to read critically.
To peroxide foundations of those students who will go for further study in
science and technology.
The PSSC course is considered as much more effective than a text
books . It is a Co-operative and co-ordinated set of resource far teaching
secondary school physics. This course consists of four parts.
Part I is fundamental Concepts of line, space, and matter.
Part II is Optics
Part III is mechanics
Part IV is electricity and physics of atom.
PSSC course developed materials four this study they consists of
Text bodes
Teachers Guide
Laboratory experiment
Supplementary text materials
Simplified line cost apparatus
Film or documentaries
Achievement test.
The hub of PSSC projects is the laboratory where students are
encouraged to perform open ended experiment. The course

and critical

thinking . Stimulated .The students have been able to learn thought more
creatively and critical way of thinking also.

2.CHEM Study
CHEM study ,The chemical education material study better known
as CHEM study alas developed in early 1960s at UC Berkeleys college of
chemistry and Lawrence Hall of science and Harvey Mudd College and
continued Lawrence Hall of science through the 1980s, J.A carpel alas
mainly responsible for the development of CHEM study .The course
stresses productive learning and thinking ratter than rate learning and
mechanical habits of thought and each succeeding step contains a germ of
discovery.
Chemical education material study was established an basic of a
recommendation by an adhoc committee of the American chemical society.
It is also considered as a parallel course in chemistry. It employs indulines
approach in which practical clerks precedes theory. The project was
awarded continuing grants by the national science foundation in order to
develop an original curriculum in high school chemistry and the materials
needed to implement it .CHEM study still provides videos and film
designed to improve the teaching of chemistry at the high school level .A
series of 24 videos and related teachers guidance and teaching aids
specially designed to improve the teaching of high school chemistry and a
specific chapters of the most popular chemistry text is available .the main
objectives of CHEM study are,
To update chemistry in the light of latest developments.
To give students a good under standing of the subject.
To organize context in unifying concepts and principles.
To peroxide opportunities for laboratory works.
To makes students aware absent the applications of chemistry as
an experimental science, followed by some fundamental concepts
6

of chemistry .Also applications of chemistry in every day life and

in industry though a study of topics such as fibers, plastics ,
detergents, drugs and insecticides. CHEM study encourage
teachers to under take further study of chemistry course that are
geared to keep pace with advancing scientific frontiers, and there
by improve their teaching. It stimulate and prepare these high
school students where purpose

is to continue the study of

chemistry in college as a profession.

CONCLUSION
PSSC and CHEM Study Can be considered as two important approaches
for teaching science. PSSC course was really meant to improve physic
teaching at school levels because it encourage the spirit of enquiry thought
experimentation end stimulate students power of creativity

and critical

thinking .It can be considered as alternative of modern physics. CHEM study

course begins with over view of chemistry as an experimental science,
followed by same fundamental concepts of chemistry .CHEM study material
includes text book, laboratory manual, teachers guide , film tests,
programmed instructional material ..etc. CHEM study has lead to
improvements in laboratory facilities .The students have been able to learn
through heuristic

methods and steps contains a germ of discovery.
