Introduction

Manufacturing systems engineers work to integrate the entire
manufacturing process. This ranges from production and supply right through to
sales. The aim is to allow the maximum volume of high-quality product to be
produced at the lowest cost and in the shortest time. They use the latest
computer technology and employ a systematic approach to finance, methods,
materials and technology across traditional departmental boundaries.

With this, several manufacturing systems are being used by these
engineers in making sure that they construct projects that are not only of good
quality but of course, a project that would entail them to incur the lowest cost
possible would be the best option.

One of these manufacturing systems is the flexible manufacturing
system or also known as the flexible option. It is the kind of system that allows
the system to react in case of changes, whether predicted or unpredicted. One of
its abilities is to control the number of production inputs and outputs in response
to the fluctuating demands and prices. Furthermore, its option value has the
ability to switch from product to product using the same production facilities. A
measure of how fast the company converts its processes from making an old line
of products to produce a new product.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Flexible Option

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Faster, lower- cost changes from
one part to another which will
improve capital utilization

Limited ability to adapt to
changes in product or product
mix (ex. machines are of limited
capacity and the tooling
necessary for products, even of
the same family, is not always
feasible in a given FMS)

Lower direct labor cost, due to
the reduction in number of
workers

Substantial pre-planning activity

Reduced inventory, due to the
planning and programming
precision

Expensive, costing millions of
dollars

Consistent and better quality,
due to the automated control

Technological problems of exact
component positioning and
precise timing necessary to
process a component
Lower cost/unit of output, due
to the greater productivity using
the same number of workers

Sophisticated manufacturing
systems
Savings from the indirect labor,
from reduced errors, rework,
repairs and rejects
