is applicable whre exposed surface temperatures exceed
65"C in normal or short-tenn operating conditions. Over intemally insulated piping and
equipments, provide open mesh metal guards and for surfaces which are not intemally
insulated, prcvide insulation on those pa(s of surfaces with which operating and maintenance
personnel may come in contaot while performing routine duties. The actu?l extent of
insulalion shall be detemined by Field Constouction Persoturel and/or operating pe$onnel
using the criteda thal the exposed surfaces located within 600mm horizontally or 2l00mm
vertically ofa normal access, u,alkway or work area are to be insulated.
2.1.4 lntmally refractory lined piping and equipment and any other items for which heat loss is
ssential shall not be insulated. (Se para 2.3.6).
2.1.5 Insulation is not desired for piping and equipment for which heat loss is desired
-
excepting
for personnel proiection or to avoid thernal stress problms.
2.1.6 Instruments and associated piping(other than impuls piping/tubing) subjct to opratinS flow
an or lempmture conditions prevailing in the connected piping or equipment shall be
insulated to the same requirenents as that of piping ot equipment. For impulse piping/tubing
refer impulse pipi0g insulation specificalions described olsewhere in the documeit.
2.2 EXTENT OF INSULATION ON PIPING SYSTBMS
2.2.1 tnsulated piping systems shall have straight pipe, bends, tees and pipe-fittings c-ompletely
ihsulated.
2.2.2 Unlss ofherwise spcifred, all valves atld flanged

to
maintain temperatures.
2.2.3 For bucket and floatD?e traps the inlet piping and trap shall be insulated"
2.2.4 lnsulation on inlet piping to thermostatic and thermodynarnic deam traps shall terminate at
approximately 500mm bfore the tmp.
2.2.5 Steam trap outlet piping other than closed condensate recovery system shall not be insulaled
except for persotrnel protection reasons,
2-2.6 Heat traced iqstumedtation shall be insulated. The fluid containing sections of such
. instruments add the associ4ted piping shall be completely insulared. Indication length shall
remain visible. Instrumentation other than heat traced shall not be insulated utless otherwise
required by lnstrumentation dpafiment.
2.2.7 Insulation shall not be applied ro th fotlowing, unless otherwise specified.
-
Piping vr'hich becomes hot intermittntly, such as relief valves, vonts, steam-out aod
snuJfrng stam systems, flare and blowdown systems,

At vessel heads above 600mm outside diameter are provided flats haviog
6mm dia holes. The flats are for insulation support and holes provided in them
are to be used for insulation securement. Also provided on either head is a
cenaal ring made of l0 dia galvanized steel rod. For vessels which do not
have centml nozzle, these rings shall not be proyided by vessel fatficator. For
such vessels, insulation conhactor shall prcvid these rings.
Boot of vessel, if any. is provided wilh circular suppon ring with holes. as
indicated in sketch.
Blanket shall be applied over the surface with
joints
tightly butted and laced together
rvith 1 mm dia galvanized lacing wire.
Other block insulation shall be applied with the longer dimension parallel to the a,xis
of the vessel or equipment. When blocks are applied in multiple layers, all
joints
in
successive layers shall be parallel to th long axis, shall be staggered and sealed with
insulating cmnt for calcium silicat or suitable adhesivs for others. ln all cases, the
insulation is to fit the contour of the vessel or equipment, so that the use ofa leveling
coat of insulating cement should not be normally necessary to get an sccptable
smooth exterior.
Special considentions for insulating high temperatur Vessels (Required only if
provided with calcium silicate insulation) (Fig. l5)
This provision is rcquircd to take carc of the effects of equipnent circuferential
thermal expansion on insulatiotr.
This provision is required only for vessls and Exchangers provided with calcium
silicate insulation.
Calcium silicate insulation should be installed in bevelled or curved segments only, to
avbid voids and provide an effioient insulation system.
For equipmenls upto 3000mm in diameler and 2OOoC. to take care of equipment
circumferential expansion, the circumferential block is cut and fitted to be l3mm
greater in circumference than the equipment and secured so that tension ofthe bands
ploduces compression on the butt edges mther than on the surfac to$ards tJre vessel;
the little annular space and the compressiveness ofthe blocks would sufiice to take
careof circumferenlial expansion of equipment.
lflhe vessel is above J000mm in diameter or iflemperature is above 200oC or both, a
25mm thickRockwool fibre blanket insulation shall be applied arolnd the equipment
prior to the application ofcalcium silicate. This acts as an expansion area around the
equipment to act as mechanical and sometimes thermal cwhions. The calcium silicatE
block must b out and fitted to the outside radius ofthe equipment plus the thickness
of the Rockwool spacer insulation. The insulation, when install4 should rct
ompress the fibrous blanket.
Above provision to take care of circumferentisl xpansion is required both for shell
and head.
43.3 Insulation Securenrent (for all insulatioD matedrb) (Refer
