LESSON PLAN

NAME OF THE TEACHER: KIRAN KUMAR.V.A STANDARD : IX

NAME OF THE SCHOOL : STRENGTH :
NAME OF THE SUBJECT : CHEMISTRY DURATION : 40min
NAME OF THE UNIT : SEPERATION OF DATE :
NAME OF THE TOPIC : FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION STAGE : 14+

CURRICULAR STATEMENT
Pupil develops factual knowledge conceptual knowledge and procedural knowledge of the concept of
fractional distillation and its role in our life through observation discussion and experimentation and
evaluation by questioning and participating in practical work and group discussion.
CONTENT ANALYSIS
TERMS: fractional distillation
FACTS: 1) Methanol and ethanol are two completely miscible liquids
2) The difference in boiling point is less.
3) Boiling point of methanol is 64 c and that of ethanol is 64 c
4) Crude oil is a mixture of liquid hydrocarbon which has only small difference in their boiling point. The
components of this mixture such as petrol diesel kerosene etc are separated by fractional distillation.
5) Fractionating column is the apparatus used for this.
CONCEPTS
In such a situation in which there is only slight difference in the boiling points of the components, the liquid having
the least boiling point enters the condenser in vapour form first. It enters the condenser and gets collected in
vessels. If there are more than two components in the mixture, they can also be separated on the basis of the
increasing order of their boiling points. This method is called fractional distillation.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
It enables pupil to develop,
A) Factual knowledge on fractional distillation by;
a) Recalling the situation like fractional distillation of petroleum
b) The factors are slightly differ in their boiling points
c) Recognize the boiling points of the factors present in the mixtures.

B) Conceptual knowledge on fractional distillation by;
a) Explaining the concept of fractional distillation
b) Illustrating separation of components by distillation.
c) Uses a concept of fractional distillation in new or unfamiliar situation
C) Procedural knowledge on fractional distillation by;
a) Doing activities for separating two completely miscible liquids having slight difference in boiling point.
b) Raising questions on various mixtures.
D) Meta cognitive knowledge on fractional distillation by;
a) Focusing the idea that when the vapour of components passing through the fractionating column,
liquid having low boiling point reaches the condensed first.
b) Judging the practicability of adopting this method for the separating mixtures.
E) Different process skills such as observing making operational definitions , inferring communicating etc
F) Attitude towards science
PREREQUISITES
Pupil were learned about filtration
TEACHING LEARNING RESOURCES
A) Materials for experiment.
Apparatus of fractional distillation
B) Chalk board drawings
C) Activity cards, demonstration, experiments, observation etc

INTRODUCTION

Teacher asks pupil that how to separate petroleum
from crude oil?
What is your finding?

ORIENTATION

Teacher divides the pupil into groups.

PRESENTATION

ACTIVITY :1
Teacher gives an activity card which contains name of
some liquids which are volatile in nature and has its
boiling points. Teacher asks them to make these
liquids Jodi and examine their boiling points.

DISCUSSION CLUES
1. Is there a sufficient difference in the boiling
points of acetone and water?
2. Is there sufficient difference in the boiling
points of ethanol and water?
3. Is there a sufficient difference between
ethanol and methanol?
4. If there is not sufficient difference in the
boiling points of liquids can it be separated
with same method used for separating
others?
ACTIVITY 2
Teacher give the apparatus used for separating two
completely miscible liquid have slight difference in
their boiling points (methanol+ ethanol)

Petroleum can be separated from crude oil

Yes

Yes

no

no

DISCUSSION CLUES
1. The vapour which is formed by boiling the
mixture passes through which?
2. Which component vaporizes first?
3. What happens in the fractionating column?

4. What changes occur in the condenser?

5. Which liquid is first collected in the conical
flask?
6. Can we collect the liquid having boiling point
in the same manner?
CONCEPT TO BE CONSOLIDATE
In such a situation in which there is only slight
difference in the boiling points of the components,
the liquids having the least boiling points of the
components the liquids having the least boiling point
enters the condenser in vapour form first. It
condenses and get collected in vessels. If there are
more than two components in the mixture they can
also be separated on the basis of the increasing order
of their boiling points. This method is called fractional
distillation.
APPLICATION LEVEL EXPERIENCE
Explain how can you separate petrol from crude oil

1. Fractionating column
2. Liquid having least boiling point
3. The vapour formed by the boiling of the
mixture rises up through the
fractionating column condenses at the
respective layers and turns into liquid.
4. The methanol which has low boiling
point enters the condenser in vapour
form condenses into liquid.
5. The liquid having low boiling point

6. Yes

FOLLOW UP ACTIVITY

2. What are the peculiarities of the apparatus?
3. Which are the peculiarities of the mixture which can be separated by using this method?
4. Components in a mixture can be separated on the basis of which properties of the components?
5. Which component is separated first from the mixture of methanol and ethanol?
