Transportaion:- to move the things or persons from here to there is known
as transporataion. The human being began to travel by walk. Step by step they
were introduced new methords like by using animal, then animals with triangular
shape tyre then it modified to rectangular and circular type. Fainally the human
being reached to self engine motivated vehicles. At the present human being the
humen being is used different type of transportations such as ground
transporataion, water transportation and air transportation.
I hope this report will be usefull for any one to get some idea about Dubai

World metro
A rapid transit, metro, subway, underground, or elevated railway system is an electric
passenger railway in an urban area with high capacity and frequency, and which is grade
separated from other traffic. Rapid transit systems are typically either in underground
tunnels or elevated above street level. Outside urban centers, rapid transit lines
sometimes run grade separated at ground level. Some systems use different types in
different areas. Service on rapid transit systems is provided on designated lines between
stations using electric multiple units on rails, although some systems use rubber tires.
They are typically integrated with other public transport and often operated by the same
public transit authorities. Rapid transit is faster and has a higher capacity than trams or
light rail, but is not as fast or as far-reaching as commuter rail. It is unchallenged in its
ability to transport large numbers of people quickly over short distances with little land
use. Variations of rapid transit include monorails, people movers, small-scale light metro
and the commuter rail hybrid S-Bahn. The first rapid transit system was the London
Underground, which opened in 1863. The technology quickly spread to other cities in
Europe and then to the United States, where a number of elevated systems were built.
Since then the largest growth has been in Asia, especially China, and with driverless
systems. More than 160 cities have rapid transit systems, totaling more than 8,000
kilometers (5,000 mi) of track and 7,000 stations. Twenty-five cities have systems under
construction.
Dubai metro
Dubai metro is dream project of Dubai. It was started since 2005. Which is included two
phase (Green line& Red line). The purpose the Dubai metro is Safe and smooth
travelling for all. Dubai metro construction works is started since 2006 and propose to be
finished on 2011 August.
Phase 1 (Red line)
The Dubai metro red line, it is started from Rashidiya to Jabal Ali. It has been started for
travel since 09/August 2009. It is having 29 stations (24 Elevated, 4 underground 1 at
ground level). The length of the Dubai metro red line is 52.1 Km including 4.7 Km
underground (Dubai creek also). Initially 29 trains in service and proposed to service for
travel 51 train by 2010. Expected time for one way trip travel 1hour 12 minutes. Expected
round trip are 2 hour 23 mints. It was the completed phase passing through parallel to the
Shaik Zaid road over and under interchanges of the road.

Phase 2(Green line)
Phase 2 known as green line, it is started from Qusise 2 to Jadaf 2. It is under
construction. It has 22.5 km including long having 12 elevated stations and 8 -
underground stations. As per latest information by GULF NEWS the green line will be
open for public on 2011 August. Initially they expect 16 trains in service. Expected time
for round trip is 1hour 23 minutes.

Depot for maintenance
There will be three main train depots to park and does maintenance work on trains. The
Red Line will have a main depot in Rashidiya and one auxiliary depot at Jebel Ali Free
Zone.
On the Green Line, the main depot for train parking and maintenance will be in Al Qusais
area.
2. Preliminary Works.
Preliminary work is to do some activities like surveying, site visiting, and accessibility of
site, investigation of soil and all arrangement of site for construction are known as
preliminary works. Before start any projects have to do the preliminary work. In the case
of Dubai metro surveying and site investigation is the main preliminary work. It was done
since 2006-2007.
Survey works.

3. Traffic diversion.
Mainly Dubai metro is through parallel to major roads in Dubai. So before starts the
constructions have to get lot of space to start this project due to this reason need to be
diverting the traffic flow right or left side depends upon the road structure.
For this project pile and pier construction work mainly service roads are diverted. For
stations constructions work, need to get lot of space than other construction to store
material and construction purpose.
Traffic diversion

3.1 Utility Diversion.
Utility is the underground services such as electrical cables, water supply, sewage,
drainage, telecommunication cables and military services. So before start construction
works such as piling columns footing or major excavations need to be divert to the
underground service. Otherwise it will damage during the construction/ piling works. As
per Dubai rules and regulations the authorities, the damages of underground services
during the period the contractor will get punishment to pay huge amount as like
compensation.

4. Pile and Pier
Pile is the main part of structure such as bridges and highrised building etc.

7

Seminar
www.transformia.info

4.1 Pile.
The process of piling is doing by heavy equipment like rig machine which is drilling the
ground up to reach hard soil of the earth. From hard soil put structural steel like rebar and
poured by concrete up to the ground level. In this project 2.6 meter dia and the length are
varying depths depends upon the soil structure. In the Dubai metro project length is
varying 10 13 meter long (depth).
4.1 Pier.
It is continues part of the pile which is support the main body of project structure. Top of
the pier cap the main structure. Basically dia and height of the pier is less than pile. In this
project (1.75 2) meter dia and (3-15) meter height varying. In Dubai metro project all
pile and pier casted in construction site.
Pier construction

6. Pier cap construction.
It is the third type of construction in this project. It is constructed by pre-cast castern
method. Pier cap was constructed at Jabal Ali casting yard and transported by heavy
tailor to the site. When it was reached in the site use heavy equipment like mobile crane
is using to erect the pier cap on the top of pier.
A small amount of concrete used to cast pier cap top on the pier to make permanent
structure.

Pier cap errection

7. Segment errection.
Segment errection is the main part of the project. It is piece by piece erected by electro
metric errection method using lunching girduder equipment. In this project after segment
errection it is knows as viaduct. Viaduct is base of the rail include both way track.
Segment errection.

7.1 Construction of viaducts for elevated tracks

A viaduct is a bridge, which is placed over piers to make a track for the train. The
construction of viaduct spans for the Dubai Metro has started on Shaikh Zayed Road near
Interchange 5.5 near Ibn Battuta Mall.
Each of these viaduct spans is being made up with a minimum of eight pre-cast viaduct
deck segments, which are manufactured and transported from Jebel Ali casting yard.
Each segment of viaduct, 10 meters wide and four meters in length, is being assembled

9

Seminar

with other similar sized segments individually to form a complete viaduct span bridging
across two supporting piers.
Different spans together when assembled will form the bridge deck upon which the trains
will travel. There will be 11,400 pre-cast concrete viaduct deck segments to be used for
the Red Line. Each viaduct weighs about 50 tonnes.
8. Station Construction.
Stations are main part of the project. It is used for public people departure and arrival on
the destination. The train stops only in these stations. Station construction is two type
main structure and steel construction.
Station

8.1 Construction method (Main structure)
Main structure is known as spine beam concours slab and flat form; it is used by huge
amount rebar and concrete.
8.2 Steel structure.
It is the second part of the stations constructions; it is mainly using the roofing structure. It
having primary rib, secondary rib and brazles. The steel structure is erected by heavy
equipment like mobile crane, tower crane and chely picker. After steel errections water
proofing and finishing work like cladding, it is used to make beauty of structure.

10.1Extension of lines
Extension of Dubai Metro's Red Line is currently under design. It will be extended from
Jebel Ali Free Zone to Dubai-Abu Dhabi border an additional 12 km. The RTA is
reviewing a plan to extend the Red Line from Jebel Ali to the under construction Jebel Ali
Airport, but is still not finalized.

Extension plans on the Green Line have already been approved and it has already been
extended by about 4.9 km from Healthcare City to Al Jaddaf. The Green Line was initially
designed for 17.6 km, but now it is 22.5-km long
10.2 Car parking for rail users

Car parking facility will be provided to metro users on the concept of "park and ride".
There will be two major parking lots on Red Line one at Rashidiya Station for 3,000
cars and at Jumeirah Islands Station for another 3,000 cars. The biggest parking lot will
be built at Al Qusais Station with a capacity of 6,000 cars. It will cater to users coming
from Sharjah.
There will be small parking spaces at each station while each station will be linked to
other mode of transportation, including taxis, buses and at some stations water transport.
10.3 Adjacent bus and taxi stations

All main metro stations will have adjacent bus stations as part of the integrated transport
system which will include buses, taxis as well as water transport links at stations near the
