Installation of Elizabeth Dowdeswell as
the 29th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario

Toronto, September 22, 2014. The Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario announces
that the installation ceremony of Ms. Elizabeth Dowdeswell as Ontarios 29th Lieutenant
Governor will take place on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at 2 p.m. The installation includes
events inside the Legislative Chamber as well as a military ceremony on the front grounds of
the Legislative Building at Queens Park.

Members of the public may watch these events on the Ontario Parliamentary Channel and
online at http://ontla.on.ca/. Live footage will begin at 1:45 p.m.

Those wishing to witness the military ceremony in person are invited to view the inspection of
the Guard of Honour in front of Queens Park (south driveway) from 3:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Two fifteen-gun artillery salutes will be fired from Queens Park (at Wellesley Street West and
Queens Park Crescent West): the first to mark the taking of oaths at approximately 2:30 p.m.,
the second to coincide with the inspection of the guard at approximately 3:15 p.m.

Highlights: Installation ceremony of Elizabeth Dowdeswell

Carriage procession
At approximately 1:25 p.m., Ms. Dowdeswell will depart from the Royal Ontario Museum in a
carriage procession to the front entrance of the Legislative Building at Queens Park. Escorted
by a mounted detachment of the Governor Generals Horse Guards, Ms. Dowdeswell will be
accompanied by nephews Kyle, 11, and Cole, 13, in a traditional landau lent by the Royal
Agricultural Winter Fair for the occasion.
Musical program
The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, directed by Mr. Noel Edison, will perform as guests assemble
inside the Legislative Chamber.
A string quartet from the Royal Conservatory of Music will perform the Salute to the Lieutenant
Governor, commonly known as the Vice-Regal Salute. It consists of the first six bars of the
royal anthem, God Save the Queen, followed by a short version (the first four bars and the
last four bars) of the national anthem, O Canada.
Ms. Dowdeswells niece, Ms. Lauren Woods, will perform Mozarts Laudate Dominum and
the national and royal anthems, accompanied by the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the
Royal Conservatory of Music string quartet.
Blessing and invocation
Ms. Laurie Robinson, Executive Director, Aboriginal Initiatives at Nippissing University will
deliver an Aboriginal blessing. The Rev. the Hon. David S. H. MacDonald of the United Church
of Canada will deliver the invocation.
Commission of appointment
Ms. Dowdeswell will present her commission of appointment (a formal letter signed by the
Governor General on behalf of The Queen), which is then read. The commission takes effect
once the required oaths have been sworn and signed.

Oaths
Ms. Dowdeswell will take the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Office in both official
languages. Administered by the Chief J ustice of Ontario and witnessed by the Premier, the
oaths are set out below:
I, Elizabeth Dowdeswell, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors.
So help me God.

I shall well and truly execute the office of Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Ontario
and duly and impartially administer justice therein. I shall well and truly execute the office
and trust of Keeper of the Great Seal of Her Majestys Province of Ontario according to the
best of my knowledge and ability.
Great Seal
The Great Seal of Ontario is used on official government documents issued in The Queens
name. Each time a new Lieutenant Governor is installed, he or she is also sworn in as Keeper
of the Great Seal. After receiving the Great Seal, Ms. Dowdeswell will entrust it to
the Hon. Michael Orazietti, Minister of Government and Consumer Services.
Honours insignia
Ms. Dowdeswell will arrive wearing the insignia of an Officer of the Order of Canada (she was
appointed in 2012) and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond J ubilee Medal (received in 2012).
Upon assuming office, Ms. Dowdeswell becomes the Chancellor of the Order of Ontario. As
part of the installation ceremony, she will receive the orders insignia. The Order of Ontario is
the provinces highest official honour, and is awarded annually by the Lieutenant Governor to
recognize the highest level of individual excellence and achievement.
Before proceeding outside following the indoor ceremony, Ms. Dowdeswell will receive the
Vice-Regal Badge from a representative of the Governor General. Approved in 1999 by
The Queen, the badge is a visible symbol of the Lieutenant Governors office.

Outdoor military ceremony
Following events in the Legislative Chamber, Ms. Dowdeswell will proceed to the front
driveway of the Legislative Building to inspect a guard of honour composed of men and women
of the 4th Canadian Division and commanded by Major Francis Gould.
A guard of honour of up to 100 persons is accorded to the Lieutenant Governor on occasions
of provincial significance. As The Queens representative, the Lieutenant Governor is entitled
to be saluted by members of the Canadian Forces and other uniformed personnel.
Fifteen-gun salute
Two fifteen-gun artillery salutes will be fired from Queens Park (at Wellesley Street West and
Queens Park Crescent West): the first to mark the taking of oaths, the second to coincide with
the inspection of the guard.
The 7th Toronto Regiment will fire the salutes, which are customarily given on occasions such
as the opening of the Legislative Assembly, when the Lieutenant Governor visits a saluting
base, and the final departure of a Lieutenant Governor upon leaving office.
