GENERAL I NTRODUCTI ON
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The aim of this study was to investigate upon the reevan!e of using role play in the
teaching and learning of selected topics in Economics at form IV leel in a private
se!ondary s!hoo situated in the south" The students were girs aged #etween $%&$'
years"
(oowing daiy o#servation of the students during !asses of E!onomi!s !ouped with
their poor performan!e in the first term assessments) the investigator has !ome to reaise
that these students were not en!ouraged to deveop sound *nowedge and understanding
as we as !apa#iity for anaysis and !riti!a thin*ing of whatever was earned during
!assroom intera!tion"
An A!tion Resear!h was !ondu!ted using Role !lay) the identified strategy in order to
test how far the strategy is appropriate in #ringing positive !hange in the tea!hing and
earning pro!ess of the see!ted topi!s" (or the purpose of the study) a mi+ of #oth
,uaitative and ,uantitative resear!h methodoogy was used" The Resear!h Cy!es were
!ondu!ted with $- mi+ed&a#iity students using data gathering instruments namey an
"#seration $rid) the Students% &ritten Test and a Students% 'uestionnaire"
An anaysis of the findings has shown that the use of Roe pay in the tea!hing and
earning of see!ted topi!s has ed to improvement in students. performan!es" In fa!t)
students parti!ipated a!tivey in the earning of the topi!s see!ted and there was rea
enthusiasm among them as to the roes assigned to ea!h" This !onnotes that a!tive
parti!ipation of students is essentia for effe!tive tea!hing and earning" It is therefore
re!ommended that a !om#ination of strategies shoud #e adopted so as provide
opportunities to the students to wor* a!!ording to their profies) a#iities and !apa#iities"

A C"(STRUCTIVIST VIE& ") E*UCATI"(
The principle goal of education is to create men who are capable of doing new things,
not simply of repeating what other generations have done - men who are creative,
inventive and discoverers (Piaget J., 1923)

It is a fa!t that students. engagement and motivation are !riti!a to sustained

This e+perimenta resear!h is signifi!ant in the !onte+t of the tea!her&resear!her.s s!hoo
where it was o#served that in a !ass of (orm I2) students had under&performed in the $

not ta*en pa!e"
Anderman 9 Midgley +12234 righty !aim that students are more engaged in earning
when they are a!tive and have some !hoi!e as we as !ontro over the earning pro!ess"
To this end) this !oud e+pain why those students were not engaged propery in the
tea!hing and earning pro!ess as they were not given the opportunity to intera!t in !ass"
Thus) they were not motivated to put ma+imum efforts in what they were doing" One
possi#e reason might #e attri#uted to the fa!t that the e+pository method was mosty
used due to the oaded sya#us whi!h the tea!her had to !ompete #efore the
e+aminations are s!hedued" 5owever) it must #e noted that athough the e+pository
method is sti #eing e+tensivey used in everyday tea!hing) it is the responsi#iity of
pra!ti!ing tea!hers to adopt a medey of strategies in order to promote effe!tive tea!hing
and earning and to ma*e this pro!ess more interesting for #oth the students and the
tea!her"
6oreover) it has #een o#served that students are not provided with earning opportunities
