Pulling downhole tools with external fish necks

Applications
Pulling downhole tools with an external fish
necks
Features & Benefits
Cam surfaces on dogs ensure strong latch
Built-in emegency shear release mechanism
Reliable design

Description
The Evolution Model ESB Pulling Tool is designed
to engage and retrieve downhole tools with an
external fishing neck. Downward jarring is utilized
to release the tool to be pulled.

Operation
The tool is operated by locating the ESB over the
external fishing neck of the tool to be pulled. The
pulling tool dogs latch onto the fishing neck. Cam
surfaces on the dogs force the lower end of the
dogs to be pressed inward, thereby ensuring a
strong latch.
Should the pulling tool not be able to retrieve the
downhole tool, it can be released from the fishing
neck so it may be brought out of the hole. The
shear pin can be sheared with repeated severe
jarring. Once sheared, the cylinder spring forces
the core to move up. This releases the pulling tool
dogs. Once the lips of the pulling tool dogs release,
the ESB can be removed from the hole and the
shear pin replaced.

aligned and visible.
3. Insert a new shear pin.
4. Replace both the shear pin
retainer and the Sub.

Disassembly
1. Grip the cylinder of the pulling
tool in a vise.
2. Remove the Sub and the shear
pin retainer.
3. Rotate the Core so that the lower
holes in it align with the holes in the
cylinder. Insert a punch or some
other similar tool to prevent the
Core from turning. Remove the
Nut.
4. Remove the punch.
5. Remove the cylinder spring.
6. Remove the core.

Assembly
The assembly of the ESB is done in
reverse except for two aspects.
Before the cylinder spring is
replaced, align the lower hole of the
core with that of the cylinder and
insert a punch. After the nut has
been replaced, remove the punch
and push the nut down until the
upper shear pin hole on the core is
aligned with the hole in the
cylinder.
