MLK Life Final Answers

1-20. True

21.
1. Radical Involvement
2. Socially active faith
3. Mass radical disobedience (shift from nonviolent direct action) and intensies his
backing of power to solve problems
4. Becomes more politically interested (democratic socialism, critique of Wall Street, etc)
5. Broader approach to racial and economic justice in America

22.
1. The use of mass violence to solve problems and how it wont work
2. Black and white troops integrated overseas in Vietnam but still segregated back on
home soil in America in schools, restaurants and various other social settings
3. Brotherhood of all kinds of men across the globe- war in Vietnam poses men
(brothers) against one another
4. Government spending on war in Vietnam vs. money spent to ght against poverty and
for the bettering of the educational system
5. The immorality of men killing men and how it harshly goes against Kings policy on
nonviolent direct action

23. Violence- does no good, only creates deeper problems. MLK is highly against violence
and thinks it hinders progress for society, from racial equality to poverty, all across the
board.
Self-defense- since MLK wholeheartedly believes in nonviolent direct action and rmly
practices it, it is difcult to say that MLK believes in self-defense, since most self-defense
is in some way another some form of violence, whether it be through physical,
psychological, or verbal means. Based on MLKs stance on nonviolent direct action, the
only type of self-defense he can advocate is nonviolent self-defense, which in my mind
would mean it isnt self-defense at all.
Nonviolence- believes it is the key to making progress in civil rights and overall in the
world with any issue, for example he opposes the war in Vietnam and a main reason is
because of the violence that occurs. MLK is a talking man, that is to say that he would
rather converse and debate with you to solve problems rather than resort to violence;
MLK is an intellectual being and uses his intelligence to nonviolently solve his problems
and the problems of his brothers and sisters.

24. MLKs understanding of maladjustedness: society as a whole tries to become adjusted
to things, for example social norms. However, he says some things he must be
maladjusted to, such as racism and segregation, as well as other things he sees as
unjust.

25. 1. Readjusting spending, taking the money for what MLK calls a 30 billion dollar war in
Vietnam and using it towards poverty and bettering education.
2. Complete integration of African Americans into society would signicantly increase the
types of jobs African Americans could have, open up various employment opportunities,
and bring in money for their families, overall decreasing poverty in the United States,
specically with African Americans in this case.
3. Increasing the education of African Americans combined with number two above
would qualify African Americans equally for jobs that their white competitors were
applying for.
4. Housing programs and public housing programs for low income citizens of America
should be implemented for people of all skin color and races.
5. African Americans coming together as their own population and using their combined
economic power to make changes for all African Americans.
6. Increasing the number of votes that African Americans put in ballots every year
(African Americans have voting power and King says they arent using it to their full
advantage).

26. 1. By addressing poverty economically and politically- ght against it through words and
nonviolent movements, protests, etc
2.
3. By giving the low-class citizens an education that will rival the high-class citizens,
which will then lead to job opportunity equality (in many cases) and equality in
other areas.
4. Voting against poverty in polls and elections, vote in the people that ght against
poverty for all people of America.
5. The power of large monopolistic corporations vs. small businesses- support local
businesses that can hire locally and decrease the poverty rate of people in small towns,
which in turn will make the small businesses thrive and lead to a healthier local economy
which will hopefully branch out in-between small towns and decrease poverty throughout
America.

27. 1. The relation of men of all races to God and their character rather than their skin color
eliminates the worth of men based on color and puts them into view based on their
character and relationship/closeness to God.
2. Because integration is morally right. Bringing morals into the picture, many could
argue against integration in society and say it is morally wrong for any reason they
decided to pull out of nowhere, but for King he believes that the elimination of racism is
just plain right.
3. His view on nonviolence and the brotherhood of men leads him to lead to the fact that
integration is key to nonviolence among men, and the elimination of racism and color
prejudice will ght for this nonviolence and the forming of the beloved community that
King so desperately desires.
4. King argues for not desegregation but integration, because desegregation does not
blend African Americans into society; instead it gives the African Americans their
freedom but while they are free they are still left in a society where they are still looked
down upon because of their skin color. Integration plus the elimination of racism and
color prejudice would lead to African Americans being truly free AND being looked at as
equals by the American society.
5. King argues that even if African Americans are given their rights in totality, their is a
difference between these laws being put into place legally (de jure) and being put into
practice (de facto). To eliminate racism and color prejudice the law needs to be put into
place and used de facto by all people of America, and expanded upon through the eyes
of the people with the goal of equality, morality and justice happening for all African
Americans.

28. Counterist ethic= militancy+morality. The counterist ethic ties into isms of
separatedness by ghting against (countering i.e. counterist) these isms, such as
homophobism, sexism, classism, etc with a particular focus on racism (all three types:
individual, cultural, institutional). The three approaches the counterist ethic can take
against these isms of separatedness are active perpetuator, passive perpetuator and
active counterist.

29. King has come to realize that his vision of the beloved community is extremely difcult to
achieve due to many negative factors in society. MLKs thinking has shifted from
nonviolent direct action to mass civil disobedience. He believes his death is very near.
Poor peoples campaign. Assassinated April 4, 1968 in the Lorraine Motel in Memphis,
TN.

30. Before I took this class I hardly knew a thing about MLK as a reverend, but then again I
didnt know much about King in general, either. The most signicant piece of information
that I will take away from this course is most likely Kings stance on nonviolent direct
action and how he stood by it his entire life to make progress. While he was never fully
satised with his progress in his lifetime, he never resorted to violence to x issues of
any kind and that says a lot about him as a person.
