Purpose
The purpose of the course is to teach the PhD students how to position their research within
the broad field of operations management, and to get familiar with the typical research
problems and methods within the six research programmes of Beta.

Organization and Content
This course consists of two parts. The first part will be devoted to the six research
programmes of Beta. These programmes represent different research disciplines. Per research
program, one will discuss typical research topics, typical research methods, strengths and
weaknesses of these research methods, good vs. bad research, and the interaction with other
disciplines.
In the second part of the course, we give an overview of the development of operations
management in the past 50 years, and a framework is presented for different types of
research. Next, students work in groups to position their own PhD research (the research
proposals at this stage will vary from very green to fully developed proposals, but all of them
can be positioned), and each PhD student will give a short presentation on his/her research
proposal.
The first part consists of six sessions. Each of these sessions has a load of 7 hours, consisting
of 4,5 hours preparation and 2,5 lecture hours.
The second part has a load of 14 hours, consisting of 8 hours preparation and 6 lecture hours.

Costs
For Beta PhD's free.
