Think of three ways in which learning languages is different from learning other subjects.

SUBJECT 2
Read the following text and answer the questions:

This shop is small and beautiful and it does not stock bestsellers, preferring to promote less well-
known young authors. The children's section demonstrates the difference in philosophy between this
and most other shops. 'We carry a vast range of books that reflect reality,' says Mandy. 'The vast
majority of bookshops don't show children the world the way it is.' You could question the need to have
CDs, tapes and so many other products in a bookshop, but Mandy says her bookshop would be
incomplete without them.

a) Do you buy books on the internet or in bookshops?
b) Does the shop mentioned in the text have another function apart from the selling of books?
c) What types of things do you like to read?

SUBJECT 2
Read the following text and answer the questions:

It may sound surprising, given that you'd imagine the average child wouldn't be seen dead near his or
her parents on a disco floor, but there is an amazing new trend towards families going clubbing
together. Child-friendly venues are appearing everywhere, the main difference being that they are
predominantly alcohol- and smoke- free zones and parents and their children actually get up on the
dance floor together to have a bop. The Whirl-Y-Gig club, which held its first family club nights over
15 years ago, is currently one of the most popular places for different generations to let their hair down
together.

a) Is there a big generation gap between children and parents in your country?
b) Would you consider going to a club like the Whirl-Y-Gig? Why/ Why not?
c) Are there any benefits of going to such clubs with your parents?

In our family everybody does some shopping. My mother, like most housewives, likes her larder to be
well stocked. She usually writes a shopping list for us.
In the supermarket you can buy all sorts of food and drinks. All goods are packed and you can choose
anything you like. If you don't like to spend much time on cooking you can buy convenience foods,
which are ready to cook or eat. They are sold tinned, dried or sealed in plastic bags or aluminium foil.

a) Do you buy convenience food?
b) Do you like to shop? Why/ Why not?

As well as being more fun, home education can be positively beneficial. 'On average, home-schoolers
are two years ahead of their schooled counterparts,' says Roland Meighan , professor of special
education at Nottingham University. A parent need not be a qualified teacher to be a home educator
and children do not have to follow the national curriculum or sit formal tests. It is perfectly legal to
keep a child away from school, as long as he or she is being educated.

The Furby, a five inch tall doll with bulging eyes and a round mouth, which had a great resemblance to

Part of the interest in the toy was because it displayed lifelike qualities. It was interactive. In particular,
it needed nurturing. The toy responded to light, sound and touch and had the ability to learn to speak
English. Conversely, it could teach its owner how to speak Furbish, which was a mixture of several
language sounds.

Europeans are upgrading their mobile phones, computers, television, audio equipment and printers

environment and to our bodies because the chemicals and heavy metals used to make electronic
products arent biodegradable.
Recent statistics have shown that Europe generates 10.3 million tones of electronic waste a year. To
reduce the dangerous impact of e-waste on environment, many computer and mobile phone companies
have started recycling schemes making it easier to dispose of old computers, mobile phones,
accessories and batteries.

For most people, a dream home is just that... a dream. But for those people who have the right
combination of money and imagination, building that dream can become reality and the results can be
rather strange! Jim Onan, of Illinois, USA, built his own five-storey golden pyramid. The pyramid is
surrounded by water - and just to make sure there are no unwanted visitors, there are sharks swimming
around in it! The pyramid has five bedroom, six bathrooms and an observatory on the top floor so Jim
can watch the stars in peace. But thats tiny compared to the Hollywood home of TV producer Aaron
Spelling: the house itself occupies 3,390 square metres, and contains four bars, three kitchens, eight
garages, a doll museum and a special room for wrapping presents!

a) What kind of people do you think Jim Onan and Aaron Spelling are?

Kristina: We think its important for the teacher to use English as much as possible and only to use the
students language when its really necessary. The teacher should always give homework, correct the
homework and give it back quickly! The teacher should always try to make the lesson interesting.
Sometimes its not so easy, but its important to make the effort! You should use the course book, but
maybe not every lesson. Its a good idea to bring in other materials from time to time. About correcting
mistakes, well, some students say the teacher should always correct all the mistakes, but in fact, if you
do that, the students never get to the end of their sentences! I think the teacher should just correct the
important mistakes.

a) What is the secret of successful language learning in Kristinas opinion?

Although texting is a convenient and cheap method of staying in touch with your friends, it can also
bring problems. In 2005, a British teenager became the first person in the world to receive treatment for
an addiction to text messaging. In one year, the nineteen-year old spent about 4,500 on texts. He was
also addicted to email, and sent 8,000 messages in one month from his computer at work. For some
people, text messaging has changed their lives. James Trusler from Sussex in England travels around
the world taking part in texting competitions. Hes the worlds fastest texter and recently set a new
world record while he was appearing on Australian TV. Fortunately, he doesnt get big bills because he

SUBJECT 2
Read the text below and answer the questions:

In Britain, there are two occasions each year when people usually receive presents: on Christmas Day
and on their birthday. In the past, your 21st anniversary was the most important, because it symbolised
becoming an adult. People traditionally received a silver key on that day to symbolise opening the door
to the adult world. The custom of giving gifts on 25 December only dates back to Victorian times.
Before that it was more common in Britain to exchange presents on New Years Eve or Twelfth Night
(5/6 January). These days, on Christmas Eve, parents put presents for their children in stockings and
leave them in the childrens bedrooms while they are asleep. Gifts for older children and grown-ups are
put around the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve and are opened the next day.

a) What customs of gift-giving in Britain in the past are mentioned in the text?
b) What presents do you usually receive on your birthday?

unsinkable. Crossing the North Atlantic one April night, it struck an iceberg and sank. Due to
shortage of lifeboats, 66% of the passengers lost their lives in the icy waters.

Teen magazines are a way for a teenager to find news about the newest fashion trend. Advertisers,
marketers and designers know that fashion is very important to most teens, so magazines are a very
profitable way to persuade teens to purchase a particular fashion product. According to a recent study,
eight out of ten teens read teen magazines each year. The same study also revealed that teens trust print
media over any other media they consume. Teen magazines affect fashion because teens have a strong
influence on what society wears, persuading the fashion buying decisions of their parents.

a) How do the teen magazines influence fashion trends?
b) What kind of clothes does the modern teenager want to wear? How about you?
c) Do you think it is important to follow fashion? Give arguments to support your opinion.

SUBJECT 1

Speak about a life experience that has taught you a lesson.

SUBJECT 2
Read the text below and answer the questions:

Because of the way children can influence their parents spending, marketers find it important to attract
kids into stores with their parents. One popular way that advertisers achieve this is by holding regular
kids clubs or other in-store events. These promotions can range from stores employing a childrens
entertainer to perform in-store magic to a national child-friendly celebrity, making an appearance. The
events are designed to make adults feel comfortable, entertain kids and make sure they both buy
products in-store often with vouchers on the promoted goods. Creating a welcoming atmosphere for
the child means that they may return much later as adults, maybe with their own children.

a) Why are the in-store events organised?
b) Have you ever been to such promotions before? Do you think these types of promotion are
effective in our country? Why? Why not?
c) How can kids influence their parents buying decisions at the store?
