(ii) Explain, using thekinetic theory, why thepressure inagas increases if it iscompressed
at constant temperature. ( 8 m a rks)
.
(b) Figure 1below shows part of the apparatus inwhich dry air istrapped inacontainer of uniform
bore, fitted with athermometer and anelectric heater. A pressure gauge, metre rule, pump and
avalve are also shown.
(i) Given that the electric heater is rated at 1600 watts, calculate the heat energy it will
deliver to the dry air in half an hour.
The dry air is initially at atemperature of 19C and apressure of 105kPa. The heater
isturned on for acertain period and the temperature rises to 9SOC while-the volume is
increased to one and aquarter times its original value. Calculate the final pressure.
(iii) Explain how you would attempt tokeep pressure constant while investigating Charles'
law. ( 12 m a rks)

Calculate thewavelength and frequency of thissame light when passing through another medium
where its speed is 1.5 x 108ms-l. (4 marks)
An object is suspended at rest some distance above the surface of the earth and then allowed
to free fall to the ground under gravity. Identify the forms of energy it possesses
(d) Inthe process of pile driving, aheavy weight falls from agreat height onto aconcrete or steel
column, called a 'pile'. The pile is .driven into the earth where it can become part of the
foundation of avery tall building. .
Tomodel theprocess, ashort steel cylinder of mass 100kg, and whose length canbeneglected,
is made to fall freely from aheight 15mabove the top of asteel rod of mass 15kg which is
sharpened at thebottom end. Initially the rod isheld inplace sothat itjust makes contact with
athick block of wood. After the steel cylinder falls on therod, the rod isdriven into theblock
of wood.
Steel cylinder
mass = 10 0 kg
(i) Calculate thepotential energy of the steel cylinder with respect to thetop of the steel
md.
(ii) Given that the rod and cylinder move together after the impact, calculate the
instantaneous velocity of thecombined body immediately after impact.
(ill) Fri~ti~nal force brings the rod and cylinderto rest after therod has beeI:{Qriven0.05 m
into theblock of wood.
(ii) Useyour diagram togive abrief explanation of how theloudspeaker converts electrical
signals to sound. (8marks)
(c) If theloudspeaker is operating at anefficiency of 0.5%, calculate the sound power produced.

In alaboratory demonstration ateacher placed this power supply in series with aresistor and asemi-
conductor diode.
What is the difference between this type of d.c. and that from abattery?
(8 marks)
If the voltage across the diode is0.7 V and theresistor has avalue ofJ .8 kQ, calculate
theMAXIMUM voltage across theresistor and thecorresponding MAXIMUM value
of thecurrent flowing inthecircuit. (7marks)
(c) Many modem electronic appliances require alow d.c. voltage to operate, and to satisfy this
requirement the input a.c. voltage of 156 V may be transformed before rectification. A
transformer tobeused for this purpose has 648 turns onthe primary. If the secondary voltage
required from the transformer is 6V, calculate the number of turns of the secondary circuit,
assuming the transformer tobe ideal.
