Providence Schools will open two new high schools in 2015 which will be unlike anything the district has ever done before. Centered on the Carnegie Corporation of New Yorks School Design Principles, these new schools will be personalized, mastery-based and feature new instructional approaches and flexible use of time and resources.
We need students to help create the vision and plan for these high schools. Students, staff, families and community members are essential participants in the design process please join us to influence the direction for these small, innovative high schools!
Many Ways for Students to Participate You will have several opportunities to share your ideas about what you think about the design of our new high schools. We are looking for students to apply right away for #1 and #2 below, while activities for #3 will take place later this fall and during the rest of the school year.
1. Design Team Member Design Team members will take the lead in creating the direction for our future schools through a design-thinking process by researching, designing, testing and proto-typing new approaches. Experienced student leaders can apply to participate on our High School Design Team. Team members must be committed to intensive design year activities, including participation in regular meetings (at least twice a month) and some travel, and completion of school design projects. Stipend for attending at least 80% of meetings and activities = $1500 (for year).
2. Student Steering Committee The Student Steering Committee will learn design-thinking processes to identify student priorities for the new schools and advocate for those elements in the design. Students in 8 th 12 th grade from any Providence School may apply to become a part of the Student Steering Committee. This group will meet at least once a month with additional meetings scheduled as needed. Stipend for attending at least 80% of meetings and activities = $500 (for year).
3. One-time meetings or focus groups Throughout this school year, we will hold one-time focus groups, interviews and design sessions at different high schools for student volunteers. Your principal will announce dates and times in the future for you to select one of the volunteer opportunities.
