This document provides information about carburetor needles for the Triumph TR6. It states that most TR6 cars use a B1AF needle profile. It then explains how to determine if a car has an adjustable or fixed needle by removing the dashpot assembly and inspecting the needle. For those unsure which type they have, it recommends ordering the adjustable needles, as those are most commonly found. It provides part numbers and pricing for various carburetor needles, kits, and other parts to service Zenith Stromberg carburetors.

There seems to be some discrepancy as to correct carb needles for the TR6. Most, if not all cars use a B1AF needle. This number designates the nee- dle profile. However, some cars use an adjustable needle and some use a fixed needle. Determining which type you car has is relatively easy: Remove the dashpot cover screws. Lift out the dashpot assembly. You will see the needle in the bottom. Remove the setscrew that retains the needle into the dashpot piston (its in the side of the piston). Carefully pull the needle out of the piston. Check the barrel portion of the needle. If it is adjustable it will have a thread visible inside with a hex suitable for the installation of the adjusting tool. If it is of the fixed type there will be no thread visible. If you wish to gamble on getting the correct nee- dles without taking your carbs apart, order the adjustable ones. We usually find adjustable nee- dles when we take TR6 carbs apart. Order replacement needles to match your existing ones. Tech Suggest i on: Often the needle retaining Brass barrel piece will be seized in the Dashpot. We recommend that you soak the whole damn thing in penetrating oil for few days, prior to dismantling. It will make the job of disassembly much easier (could change the job fromimpossible to possible actually). The brass barrel that secures the main needle jams with cor- rosion into the Aluminumalloy dashpot casting. TR6 TR250 GT6 Spi t f i re MGB & Mi dget 1975- 1980 Haynes Carburetor Service Manual Covers Weber SU S t r o m b e r g Carburetors This manual details most (if not all) repair and overhaul proce- dures for the carburetors on your British sports car. Includes information on the infamous automatic choke used on later Strombergs. Also includes a complete needle chart for all most applications. Though the books cover claims it to be a Weber service manual, it has extensive SU & Stromberg information. Haynes has simply rationalized its carburetor books so that now one manual covers what were for- merly three separate publications! CP-KIT-510109 Reg. $41.75 Sale $36.95 ea Stromberg Carburetor Grose-J et Needle & Seat Grose jets have been very popular with the sports car fraternity for a number of years. The Grose jet and the standard needle & seat performexactly the same function. As the float level rises in the carburetor, the needle & seat shuts off the fuel supply. The needle and seat is nothing more than an on-off valve. A standard Stromberg needle & seat has a ta- pered brass seat and a similarly tapered nylon or brass pin. As the fuel level in the float chamber rises to a predetermined level, the float armpushes the pin up into its seating. The valve is then closed, shutting off the fuel supply to the carburetor. As you drive, the engine consumes fuel and the carburetor float chamber level falls. The float drops down, allowing the needle valve to open. Fuel is admitted until the float rises again. This cycle continues when- ever the engine is running. The standard needle & seat is quite susceptible to dirt in the fuel system. Even one small grain of sand or dirt is sufficient to prevent the needle & seat fromclosing properly. Pressurized fuel fromthe fuel pump will then con- tinue entering the carburetor. This is often the cause of carburetor flooding and its associated trouble. The Grose jet has a Brass valve body. Rather than a tapered pin, it used a hardened steel ball to close of the fuel flow. It works well and is less sus- ceptible to dirt and leaking than the standard nee- dle & seat. The availability of Grose jets has been poor lately. We do have some in stock now and they are on sale. Fits all 150 & 175 CDSE carburetors. Fits TR6 TR8, Spitfire & GT6, Rubber bumper MGBs and Midgets. CP-NEEDL-386-350 Reg. $18.50 Sale $14.95 ea Stromberg 175CDSE Main Diaphragm Carry a spare diaphragmin the trunk at all times! The diaphragm, being very thin rubber, is easily punctured by an engine backfire through the carburetor. A ruptured diaphragmwill cause your engine to lose about 80%of its power! This is one of the few parts that can be easily changed on the side of the road if necessary! Only patience, a new diaphragm, and a Phillips head screwdriver are required to do the job. Included in the carb kit above. CP-DIAPH-B17421 Reg. $13.75 Sale $8.95 ea Stromberg 150 CDSE Main Diaphragm Fits Spitfire-GT6, Midget, and any other car with the 150 Stromberg. CP-DIAPH-B16001 Reg. $13.75 Sale $8.95 ea Stromberg Carb Float Bowl Gasket & O-Ring Kit Is your car carbureted by Zenith Stromberg??? If so you should al- ways keep a float bowl gasket kit on hand for emergencies. The Stromberg carb is prone to float bowl gasoline leaks. Since the exhaust manifold is located be- neath the carburetor(s), any fuel leaking out poses a significant fire hazard! Since the float bowl gasket often leaks, it should be replaced every time the float bowl is removed from the carburetor. Trying to re-use the gasket, or worse; trying to smear gasket goop on it is a real no-no. Not only will it end up leaking, youll prob- ably plug the carburetor jet with gasket cement! Stromberg 150 & 175 CDSE carburetors have a plastic plug in the bottomof the float bowl. You might be fooled into thinking that its brass because there is often a brass covering on it. This plug replaces the adjustable jet on early Stromberg CD carburetors of the mid 1960s. After about 1968 these carburetors have a fixed jet. However, the float bowl plug is sealed in the bottomof the float bowl with a rubber O-ring. This O-ring gets tired and begins to leak, particularly if its been disturbed. The plastic plug is held into the float bowl with barbs on the inner end. Its a simple matter of carefully squeezing the end and pulling the plug out of the float bowl. The O-ring can then be easily replaced and the plug re-installed. Order one gasket & O-ring kit per carburetor. Fits all 150 & 175 CDSE Stromberg carburetors. Fits MGB & Midget 1975-1980 TR6 & Spitfire 1970-1981 Jaguar XJ6 E-type 70-74. This diaphragmis not included in the carburetor overhaul kit. A blown or ruptured diaphragmwill allow ex- cess airflow through the carburetor(s). This will result in a weak mixture and the usual results of same, such as poor idle, backfiring, or poor acceleration. One diaphragmrequired per carburetor. Used on most Stromberg carburetors on MGB, Midget 1500, TR6, Spitfire, & TR7. CP-DIAPH-64-014A Reg. $25.80 Sale $18.95 ea Throttle Shaft Spindle Seals There are rubber seals on each end of the throttle shafts, where they protrude through the carburetor bod- ies. These seals pre- vent, or reduce, air leakage into the carburetor. This is very important since air leakage around the throttle shafts will weaken the fuel mixture. Leaking throttle shaft seals are often responsible for poor idling and even stalling out at low engine RPM. We consider new seals a must during carb over- haul.
